Salary Range: $68,000 to $72,000
The University of St. Thomas has provided a salary range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The specific salary offered will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information.
JOB SUMMARY
Collaborate with School of Engineering Lab Management Team to support the safety, operations, and maintenance of Mechanical Engineering Labs and Fabrication Shop; support students and faculty in project development while fostering a supportive student-centered learning environment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Maintain a safe lab environment by promoting a strong safety culture, accountability, and shared responsibility.
  • Maintain a high level of professionalism in the lab and in communication with students, faculty, staff, and other campus departments and trades.
  • Teach students how to safely operate lab machinery and equipment.
  • Assist students and faculty with the design and setup of new projects, research tests, and teaching lab components; foster a learning mindset.
  • Coordinate and ensure safe and efficient lab operations through effective scheduling and communication, systems, policy development and implementation, and operations monitoring.
  • Manage spaces, systems and personnel with the goal of fostering a supportive, cooperative working environment.
  • Hire, train, and supervise student workers and lab employees.
  • Collaborate across the School of Engineering to support coordinated lab and project activities; serve as a liaison to departments, centers, and programs, aligning work with broader School and Departmental priorities.
  • Maintain Mechanical Engineering labs to ensure they are stocked, organized, and in good working order; specify, procure, and oversee maintenance and calibration of lab and shop equipment.
  • Apply fabrication skills to design, machine, construct, and maintain custom equipment and fixtures supporting lab and shop activities.

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualifications
  • Two years of post-secondary education, preferably in an engineering or fabrication-related field
  • Five years of practical experience in fabrication, mechanical engineering technology, and/or industrial environments
  • Knowledge of safe work practices in a laboratory, machine shop, or industrial setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate, coordinate, and manage shop personnel

Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate's, Bachelor's, or Master's degree in in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related field
  • Prior experience working in an educational or academic environment
  • Broad experience with fabrication tools and equipment across multiple areas (e.g., machining, woodworking, welding)
  • Experience planning, designing, or organizing lab, shop, or fabrication spaces

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
Ability to work in and move about fabrication shop, educational lab, and office settings; ability to set up engineering, testing, and shop equipment; ability to transport up to 94 pounds; ability to operate material handling equipment, ability to read construction drawings, printed materials and a computer screen; ability to use a computer; ability to communicate in person, in writing, on teleconferences, and over the telephone.
