Description
The City of Aiken is accepting applications for a Building Inspector to join our Building Inspections division.
This position inspects buildings and structures to ensure compliance with City building codes and regulations. Reviews plans and performs inspections to assure all new residential and commercial construction and facilities conform to adopted building, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire safety, and other City and State regulations.
Examples of Duties
  • Receives and reviews building plans for residential and commercial structures and additions and renovations; reviews drawings to ensure conformance to all codes; issues permits and/or informs parties of deficiencies in plans
  • Consults with contractors, developers, architects, property owners, and engineers regarding permit requests; coordinates needed corrections and changes
  • Performs all field inspections of buildings under construction, alteration, or repair for compliance with adopted codes and City and State ordinances
  • Logs all inspection results into City's Building Inspection software program
  • Develops and maintains cooperative relationships with other City departments, outside vendors and the public contacted in the course of work; assists in resolving problems or complaints
  • Assists customers with complaints or requests for information involving construction or inspection issues
Other Responsibilities
  • Attends seminars and studies written materials to maintain knowledge of current practices in the field and code changes; maintains required certification

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum five (5) years building code enforcement experience
  • Necessary ICC certifications to obtain registration with South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation Building Codes Council as a Residential Inspector and Commercial Inspector
  • Valid state driver's license and a satisfactory motor vehicle record
  • Ability to communicate professionally with staff members and customers while performing code enforcement duties
