Job description

Build a Career Repairing the Instruments That Inspire Musicians

Do you love music? Have you played a woodwind instrument and always wondered how they work?

Bell's Music Shop is seeking a motivated Woodwind Repair Technician Apprentice to train under one of our master repair technicians. This is a rare opportunity to learn a highly specialized trade through paid, hands-on training while building a long-term career in the school music industry.

No repair experience is required—we're looking for someone with the right attitude, strong work ethic, and a passion for learning.

What You'll Do

As an apprentice, you'll learn to:

  • Inspect and diagnose woodwind instruments
  • Disassemble, clean, and reassemble instruments
  • Replace pads, corks, felts, and springs
  • Perform adjustments and regulation
  • Learn proper repair techniques on progressively more complex instruments
  • Maintain a clean, organized work area
  • Work closely with experienced technicians while developing your skills

Training is individualized and progresses at your own pace under the direction of our master repair technician.

Career Advancement

Our apprenticeship includes a structured advancement program.

You will begin on an instrument assigned by the foreman. After demonstrating proficiency and receiving approval, you'll advance to the next level with a $2.00/hour raise each time you master a new instrument.

Current progression includes:

  • Clarinet / Bass Clarinet – $17/hr
  • Flute – $19/hr
  • Alto Saxophone – $21/hr
  • Tenor Saxophone – $23/hr
  • Baritone Saxophone – $25/hr
  • Oboe – $27/hr
  • Bassoon – $29/hr
  • Contrabass Clarinet – $31/hr

This is a true career path—not just a job.

What We're Looking For

The ideal candidate has:

  • Experience playing a woodwind instrument
  • A positive attitude
  • Excellent attendance and punctuality
  • A strong desire to learn a skilled trade
  • Respect for coworkers and customers
  • Self-motivation and willingness to take ownership of their training
  • Pride in producing quality work

Repair experience is not required. We'll teach you.

Benefits

  • Paid, hands-on apprenticeship
  • Structured career advancement
  • Pay increases as skills are mastered
  • 10 paid days off annually
  • Bell's Music Shop pays 40% of employee health insurance premiums (employee pays 60%)
  • $25,000 employer-paid life insurance policy
  • All required repair tools and supplies provided

Additional Requirements

  • Full-time schedule (40 hours/week)
  • Ability to work with small parts and hand tools
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods
  • Must sign a two-year non-compete agreement prior to beginning the apprenticeship
