Rising Stars Student Success Advisor
Department: Student Success
The University of St. Thomas (UST), a private Catholic university committed to the liberal arts and the religious and intellectual tradition of Catholic higher education, located in Houston, Texas, near the vibrant central business district, Texas Medical Center, and museum district, is seeking applicants for a full-time Rising Stars Student Success Advisor. The Rising Stars program is designed to help first-generation and Pell-eligible students attend UST with little to no out-of-pocket tuition costs while simultaneously gaining first-hand work experience within Houston's corporate community. Students are placed with a corporate sponsor and earn funds toward their tuition by working onsite at their designated sponsor's office during the academic year.
Summary:
The Rising Stars Student Success Advisor will be responsible for tracking and documenting student participation and provide support services and referrals to their assigned caseload. The Advisor will assist with coordinating and facilitating events and activities conductive to student success and engagement within the Rising Stars program. The Advisor will conduct surveys and other data collection points to identify programmatic areas of concern/growth and will develop creative solutions in collaboration with the Rising Stars team. The position will play an integral role in enhancing the student experience within the Rising Stars Internship Program.
Job Responsibilities: -
  • Meets one-on-one with each student within their assigned cohort to review academic progress, adherence to Program requirements, timesheet submission, and provide necessary guidance to ensure students remain in good standing.
  • Provides students with appropriate guidance and internal/external referrals for any student challenges or needs.
  • Works closely with Rising Stars team to address any student concerns/issues.
  • Advises students regarding work-school-life balance to ensure they complete required internship hours while maintaining academic success.
  • Work closely with other departments on campus including professors/staff, Career Services, Student Affairs, and Student Success to encourage student engagement and success.
  • Create and track student completion of pre/post surveys and other feedback forms for to monitor student engagement, growth, and continuous program quality. Docusign Envelope ID: 70514A3C-B35B-8FCB-82D9-B3C515009013
  • Assist Rising Stars Development Manager with collection and documentation of student Internship Feedback Surveys and other internship experience feedback.
  • Record and track student attendance and participation data in program activities/events and alert students that need to fulfill requirements. Share tracking data with team for follow up by corresponding cohort advisor.
  • Assist in gathering and organizing data related to student success and retention.
  • Assist in the planning and facilitation of Rising Stars student functions and events.
  • Assist in coordinating internship placements, interviews, and partner-intern communication.
  • Communicate with Program partners where appropriate regarding internship placements, student schedules, university calendar, student issues/concerns, and student progress.
  • Work collaboratively with Rising Stars team to continuously address and improve quality of Program for optimal student experience and efficiency.
  • This position may anticipate occasionally supporting students during non-traditional business hours including evenings and weekends.
  • Other projects and tasks as assigned.

Requirements:
  • Undergraduate degree is required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of related experience demonstrating a deep understanding of university administrative policies and organization, student, and program policies and practices.
  • Experience in an academic advising capacity is preferred.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations.
  • Ability to develop and nurture relationships with team members, students, faculty, alumni, and University offices.
  • Ability to advise students showing good judgement and professionalism when making referrals, setting boundaries and expectations to equip students with skills and strategies to practice self-advocacy.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and relationship management skills with demonstrated ability to work as a team player.
  • Results-oriented individual who can anticipate and identify problems, opportunities, and take decisive action to proactively address them.
  • Experience with database management software systems like Lacai, PeopleSoft, Slate, or Salesforce is preferred.
