Full Time Additive Manufacturing Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Full Time Additive Manufacturing Engineer, and why are they important?

A Full Time Additive Manufacturing Engineer typically needs a degree in engineering (such as mechanical or materials engineering), strong knowledge of additive manufacturing processes, and experience with CAD software. Familiarity with 3D printing equipment, simulation tools, and certifications like SME Additive Manufacturing Certification are often required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are vital soft skills for success in this role. These skills and qualifications ensure precise design, efficient production, and successful collaboration in the rapidly evolving field of additive manufacturing.

What are some common challenges faced by a Full Time Additive Manufacturing Engineer, and how can they be addressed?

Full Time Additive Manufacturing Engineers often encounter challenges such as optimizing print parameters for different materials, ensuring part quality and consistency, and troubleshooting equipment malfunctions. Overcoming these challenges requires staying updated on the latest advancements in additive manufacturing technologies, collaborating closely with design and production teams, and applying rigorous testing and validation processes. Effective communication and continuous learning are key, as the field rapidly evolves and often involves multidisciplinary teamwork.

What is a Full Time Additive Manufacturing Engineer?

A Full Time Additive Manufacturing Engineer is a professional who specializes in designing, developing, and optimizing products and processes using additive manufacturing technologies, such as 3D printing. They work on creating prototypes, end-use parts, and tools by layering materials based on digital models. Their responsibilities often include material selection, process improvement, quality control, and collaborating with design and production teams to ensure efficient and accurate manufacturing. Working full time means they are employed as a regular staff member, typically working standard business hours.

What is the difference between Full Time Additive Manufacturing Engineer vs Additive Manufacturing Technician?

AspectFull Time Additive Manufacturing EngineerAdditive Manufacturing Technician
CredentialsBachelor's or higher in engineering or related field; certifications like AMF or 3D printing certificationsTechnical diploma or associate degree; hands-on training in 3D printing
Work EnvironmentDesign, development, and process optimization in R&D or manufacturing settingsEquipment setup, operation, and maintenance on the production floor
Industry UsageUsed across aerospace, automotive, healthcare, and industrial sectorsPrimarily in manufacturing plants and labs for production support

The Full Time Additive Manufacturing Engineer focuses on designing, developing, and optimizing additive manufacturing processes, requiring higher education and engineering expertise. In contrast, the Additive Manufacturing Technician handles equipment operation and maintenance, with a more hands-on role. Both roles are essential in the additive manufacturing industry but differ in responsibilities and qualifications.

Job description

Job Opportunity: Additive Manufacturing Engineering Manager with Formative 3D in Falls Church, VAAre you a hands‑on leader with deep expertise in large‑format additive manufacturing and extrusion‑based processes? Do you enjoy building teams, optimizing production systems, and solving complex print challenges in real time? Are you excited to help scale a cutting‑edge 3D printing operation and shape the future of manufacturing? If you answered yes, we want to speak with you!

As the Additive Manufacturing Engineering Manager, you will lead both the strategic direction and day‑to‑day execution of our additive manufacturing operations. This role blends leadership, technical expertise, and operational ownership—guiding production while advancing the next generation of processes, systems, and capabilities. You'll work closely across engineering, production, and leadership teams to ensure efficient, scalable manufacturing while driving continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and develop a team of LFAM/FDM technicians, promoting safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Own print processes and optimization, including parameters, material flow, toolpaths, and part quality.
  • Troubleshoot production issues (e.g., delamination, warping, equipment faults) and implement corrective actions quickly.
  • Partner with Production to streamline post-processing and assembly workflows.
  • Manage capacity planning, scheduling, and staffing in coordination with HR.
  • Collaborate with Engineering and R&D on new materials, processes, and finishing methods.
  • Drive automation and smart factory initiatives across the facility.
  • Report to leadership on KPIs, timelines, resource use, and risks.
  • Establish and maintain SOPs, ensuring quality, safety, and accurate documentation.
  • Coach and develop team members through performance management and career growth planning.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, or related field.
  • 7-10+ years of manufacturing experience, including hands-on additive manufacturing (LFAM and/or FDM).
  • Expertise in extrusion-based printing, including toolpaths, parameter optimization, and pellet/filament material handling.
  • Experience with large-format additive systems (e.g., CEAD, Caracol, Thermwood) preferred.
  • Knowledge of automation, robotics, and smart factory systems (MES, ERP, IoT).
  • Lean, Six Sigma, or similar experience driving yield improvement, scrap reduction, and cycle time efficiency.
  • Proven ability to lead technical teams in fast-paced or startup environments.
  • Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work in an industrial environment and use PPE as required.
