What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Full Stack Web Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack Web Developer, you need proficiency in both front-end (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and back-end (such as Node.js, Python, or Java) development, often supported by a degree in computer science or relevant experience. Familiarity with frameworks (like React, Angular, or Django), version control systems (Git), and database management (SQL or NoSQL) is typically required. Problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for this role. These skills and qualities are essential for efficiently building scalable, user-friendly applications and collaborating with diverse teams.

Is fullstack developer still in demand?

Full stack developers are currently in high demand due to their ability to handle both front-end and back-end development, making them valuable for many organizations. Skills in popular frameworks, programming languages, and cloud platforms enhance job prospects in this field.

What are Full Stack Web Developers?

Full Stack Web Developers are professionals who have the skills to work on both the front-end and back-end of web applications. They design and build user interfaces, as well as develop server-side logic and manage databases. Full Stack Web Developers are proficient with a variety of programming languages and frameworks, allowing them to handle the complete development process from start to finish. Their broad skill set enables them to collaborate across different project stages and ensure seamless integration between client and server systems.

Will Fullstack be replaced by AI?

Full Stack Web Developers perform complex tasks that involve designing, coding, and maintaining both frontend and backend systems, which currently require human judgment and creativity. What Does a Full Stack Web Developer Do?

Full stack web developers develop the front end and back end of web applications. Your job duties include building web projects from scratch, testing and debugging software, and maintaining and improving existing web applications. Your frontend work includes creating an intuitive user interface, while your backend work involves server-side processes and database systems. As a web developer, you work with a team of other developers to evaluate each other’s work, ensuring that errors are caught and processes are smooth before going live in applications.

Is full stack developer a good career?

A full stack web developer is a versatile role that involves working on both front-end and back-end development, often requiring knowledge of programming languages, frameworks, and databases. It is considered a good career choice due to high demand, competitive salaries, and opportunities for growth in various industries.

What are some common challenges Full Stack Web Developers face when working on cross-functional teams?

Full Stack Web Developers often collaborate closely with designers, product managers, and other specialists, which can lead to challenges in aligning technical feasibility with business goals and user experience expectations. Communication gaps may arise when translating requirements into scalable solutions or when integrating front-end and back-end components. Staying updated with evolving technologies while managing multiple project priorities is also a common challenge. Effective collaboration, adaptability, and proactive problem-solving are essential to overcoming these hurdles and ensuring successful project delivery.

What do full-stack web developers do?

Full-stack web developers build and maintain both the front-end (user interface) and back-end (server, database) components of websites and applications. They use programming languages like JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and frameworks such as React or Node.js, often working with tools like version control systems and APIs to create functional, responsive, and integrated web solutions.

Job description

Kimley-Horn is looking for a Software Developer - Applied AI in our Dallas, Texas (TX) office! The position could also be located in Richardson, Texas. This is an office-based opportunity.

Kimley-Horn’s Technology and Innovation team builds internal software that helps civil engineers deliver projects faster, more consistently, and with higher quality. Our work spans full-stack web applications, system integrations, and AI-powered features, ranging from focused utilities that streamline daily workflows to deeper platforms that bring multi-agent and retrieval-augmented systems into engineering practice.

In this role, you will build full-stack applications across that spectrum. Some are conventional web applications with discrete AI integrations; others are built around retrieval-augmented generation, multi-agent orchestration, or similar applied AI architectures. You will work directly with practicing engineers to understand real problems, ship solutions end-to-end, and refine them based on adoption. Additionally you will:

  • Build full-stack web applications that solve real workflow problems for civil engineers, ranging from focused utilities to firm-wide platforms.
  • Integrate AI capabilities where they create value, including multi-agent workflows, RAG pipelines, and intelligent assistants on top of engineering data.
  • Develop reliable backend services and modern, responsive front ends, integrating with CAD, engineering platforms, document stores, and structured and unstructured data.
  • Partner with engineers and domain experts to identify high-impact opportunities, prototype solutions, refine with feedback, and productionize for firm-wide adoption.
  • Maintain engineering-grade quality through testing, version control, CI/CD, and supportable releases as platforms and underlying models evolve.

  • 3+ years of professional post-grad software development experience building applications used by others.
  • Full-stack development experience with strong C#/.NET/TypeScript on the backend and a modern front-end framework (React, Blazor, Angular, or equivalent).
  • Strong SQL and/or NoSQL skills with sound data modeling instincts.
  • Experience with Azure Cosmos DB, including data modeling and querying for application backends.
  • Hands-on experience designing and shipping AI multi-agent workflows.
  • Practical experience building production RAG systems with Azure AI Search, including chunking, embedding, retrieval, and grounding strategies.
  • Experience with Azure AI Foundry for building, deploying, and operating AI applications.
  • Demonstrated use of AI-assisted coding tools (Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, or equivalent) to accelerate delivery while maintaining code quality.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to partner directly with practicing engineers, translating ambiguous needs into shipped software.

Preferred

  • Background in civil engineering or familiarity with AEC workflows (CAD/BIM, plan production, site/roadway/drainage design).

Why This Role

  • Enterprise impact: Your software will be used daily by engineers delivering real infrastructure projects across the country.
  • Range of work: Your day-to-day moves between standard full-stack development, system integration, and applied AI, building both the everyday tools engineers rely on and the more ambitious AI-powered systems.
  • Strategic transformation opportunity: You will help define how a 10,000-person engineering firm builds, adopts, and scales internal software, including how AI gets woven into engineering practice.
  • High ownership: You will shape architecture, influence priorities, and see your work in active use end-to-end.
