The College of Arts and Sciences has an exciting opening for a Web Developer. This is a full-time permanent position.
The Web Developer supports the College of Arts & Sciences' public-facing web presence by maintaining and enhancing existing websites, expanding services to new departments and centers and developing tools and systems that improve both the user and content editor experience. Reporting to the Director of Web Services, this position is a member of the College of Arts and Sciences' Web Services Team and partners with departments across the College to deliver secure, reliable and innovative web solutions.
The Web Developer collaborates broadly to balance University standards and best practices with local needs, creating websites and shared services that are accessible, scalable and effective. As part of an agile and collaborative team, the Web Developer simplifies technology for clients while ensuring solutions are secure, sustainable and aligned with the missions of the College and the University of Washington.
What You Will Do
Web Application Development (50%)
  • Develop and maintain websites and web applications.
  • Design, implement and enhance website features and functionality.
  • Refine user interfaces based on user feedback and usability best practices.
  • Test websites across platforms to ensure functionality, performance and compatibility.
  • Evaluate technical feasibility and ensure accessibility design best practices are met.
  • Ensure compliance with security, privacy, accessibility and institutional policies.
  • Stay current with industry trends, campus and college standards and technology advancements.
  • Integrate and support internal and third-party web tools and applications.
  • Maintain clear documentation for systems, processes and code.
  • Contribute to web strategy, collaborative problem-solving and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Collaborate on adopting new technologies and innovative development approaches.

User Support and Training (15%)
  • Respond to support requests and provide appropriate and timely solutions.
  • Troubleshoot and respond to errors and issues as they arise.
  • Create user documentation and training materials.
  • Conduct user training workshops or one-on-one training sessions.

Security, Maintenance and Compliance (15%)
  • Reinforce ongoing web security efforts, including CMS hardening, patch management, access controls and incident prevention.
  • Support platform stability during Drupal upgrades, infrastructure changes and end-of-life transitions.
  • Ensure applications comply with relevant regulations.
  • Implement secure coding practices and conduct regular vulnerability assessments.

Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement (10%)
  • Work with teams across the College to improve processes and efficiency.
  • Translate user requirements into technical specifications.
  • Participate in governance committees or working groups.

Project Management (5%)
  • Manage timelines, deliverables and resources for application projects.

Required Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field AND two years of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience developing websites using HTML, CSS, JavaScript and responsive web design best practices.
  • Experience with Drupal 10+ or a comparable content management system (CMS), including theming, site building and creating intuitive content authoring experiences.
  • Experience integrating and supporting third-party libraries, APIs and web services.
  • Experience using Git-based version control and collaborative development workflows.
  • Proven ability to manage projects, prioritize competing work and deliver solutions independently while balancing stakeholder needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong communication, customer service, organization and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of PHP, modern web development practices and current front-end technologies.
  • Familiarity with CSS frameworks, JavaScript libraries, CSS preprocessors (Sass/LESS), Composer, package management tools and cloud-hosted web environments.
  • Knowledge of WCAG accessibility standards, UX principles, Universal Design, cross-browser compatibility and accessible web development practices.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and technology innovation.
