What is a full stack software developer?

Full Stack Software Developers are professionals skilled in both front-end and back-end web development. They are capable of designing, building, and maintaining all parts of a web application, including user interfaces, server-side logic, databases, and integration with other services. Their expertise allows them to work on entire projects from start to finish, making them versatile and valuable team members. Full Stack Developers typically use a variety of programming languages and frameworks to accomplish their tasks.

How do full stack software developers typically balance front-end and back-end responsibilities within a team?

Full Stack Software Developers are often expected to seamlessly switch between front-end and back-end tasks, depending on the project's needs and the team's structure. In most environments, you may collaborate closely with UI/UX designers for front-end work and with DevOps or database specialists for back-end aspects. Balancing these responsibilities requires good communication and adaptability, as priorities can shift rapidly during a development cycle. Over time, you may find opportunities to specialize further or advance into technical leadership roles, depending on your strengths and interests.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full stack software developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack Software Developer, you need strong proficiency in both front-end (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and back-end (e.g., Node.js, Python, Java) technologies, often supported by a relevant degree or coding bootcamp experience. Familiarity with frameworks like React or Angular, databases like MongoDB or SQL, version control systems (e.g., Git), and cloud platforms is typically expected, alongside certification in relevant technologies being a plus. Problem-solving, effective communication, and adaptability distinguish top performers in this field. These skills and qualities enable developers to build robust, scalable applications and collaborate efficiently across the software development lifecycle.

What is the difference between Full Stack Software Developer vs Front End Developer?

A Front End Developer specializes in creating engaging user interfaces and improving user experience, focusing mainly on client-side technologies.

Can I learn full stack software in 3 months?

Full stack software development involves learning both front-end and back-end technologies, which typically requires several months of dedicated study and practice. While some intensive bootcamps claim to teach foundational skills in around 3 months, becoming proficient usually takes longer and depends on prior experience, learning pace, and the complexity of projects undertaken.

Is full stack software a good career?

Full stack software development is a viable career option, as it involves working with both front-end and back-end technologies, making developers versatile and in demand. It often requires knowledge of programming languages, frameworks, and tools like JavaScript, React, and Node.js, and can offer opportunities in various industries with competitive salaries. Success in this field depends on continuous learning and adapting to new technologies.

Is full stack software still in demand?

Full stack software development remains in high demand due to the need for versatile developers skilled in both front-end and back-end technologies. Employers seek professionals proficient in frameworks like React, Node.js, and cloud platforms, making it a valuable and stable career choice.

Job description

Lead Full Stack Engineer — Application Modernization & Agentic Solutions | Remote (Hybrid/Onsite preferred near Rochester NY, Irvine CA, or Frisco TX)

About the Role

We're looking for a hands-on technical leader to drive architecture and delivery on large-scale, multi-vendor cloud modernization programs. You won't manage headcount — you'll own the technical direction: the target-state architecture, the standards multiple teams build against, and the confidence of senior stakeholders funding the work. The engineers around you write most of the code; you shape it, review it, and write the parts that set the pattern.

What You Bring

Must-Have

  • 10+ years professional software/platform engineering experience with real senior technical lead accountability on complex, multi-vendor cloud programs
  • Deep AWS hands-on: Lambda, Step Functions, ECS Fargate, API Gateway, DynamoDB, S3, EventBridge, Bedrock — enough to be challenged on it and hold the room
  • Proven modernization track record: legacy systems converted into event-driven and agentic architectures
  • Strong code review depth across Python, Node.js/JavaScript, and Terraform — design-level feedback, not surface commentary
  • REST and GraphQL API design — able to catch integration problems before development starts
  • Spec rigor — critically evaluating FRDs, BRDs, and functional specs and converting them into executable platform deliverables
  • Executive presence: proven track record engaging VP-level and above, in person
  • Offshore and partner vendor management within large delivery programs
  • Architecture governance experience — ARB or equivalent
  • Strong written output: ADRs, decision logs, design docs, and status reports that hold under scrutiny
  • Agile delivery leadership across multi-team programs (Scrum or Kanban)
  • Bachelor's in CS, Software Engineering, or equivalent experience

Bonus Points

  • Regulated industry experience — life sciences, clinical, healthcare, or financial services (GxP/validated systems a plus)
  • Scientific/statistical computing familiarity: SAS, R, statistical pipelines, analysis-ready data
  • GenAI and LLM application patterns — agentic workflows, retrieval, tool use, guardrails, evaluation
  • AWS Professional certifications (Solutions Architect or DevOps Engineer); CSM
  • Prior consulting or professional services background on enterprise engagements
  • Experience standing up a delivery practice or program from scratch

What You'll Do

You'll own the target-state architecture across event-driven and agentic designs built on AWS — making and defending service selection, integration patterns, and design tradeoff decisions grounded in distributed systems fundamentals and the AWS Well-Architected Framework. Where it counts, you stay hands-on: reference implementations, architecture spikes, and the hardest problems your teams surface.

Across multiple delivery teams, partner vendors, and offshore groups, you'll set the engineering standards everyone builds against — patterns, contracts, testing expectations, and definition of done. You'll hold vendor output to the same bar as internal work and escalate credibly when it falls short.

On the stakeholder side, you'll engage VP-level clients directly as the technical voice of the program — translating between business and engineering audiences without losing precision in either direction, and producing the written record the program runs on.

Client-site and program travel required per engagement.
