What is a full stack software developer?

Full Stack Software Developers are professionals skilled in both front-end and back-end web development. They are capable of designing, building, and maintaining all parts of a web application, including user interfaces, server-side logic, databases, and integration with other services. Their expertise allows them to work on entire projects from start to finish, making them versatile and valuable team members. Full Stack Developers typically use a variety of programming languages and frameworks to accomplish their tasks.

How do full stack software developers typically balance front-end and back-end responsibilities within a team?

Full Stack Software Developers are often expected to seamlessly switch between front-end and back-end tasks, depending on the project's needs and the team's structure. In most environments, you may collaborate closely with UI/UX designers for front-end work and with DevOps or database specialists for back-end aspects. Balancing these responsibilities requires good communication and adaptability, as priorities can shift rapidly during a development cycle. Over time, you may find opportunities to specialize further or advance into technical leadership roles, depending on your strengths and interests.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full stack software developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack Software Developer, you need strong proficiency in both front-end (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and back-end (e.g., Node.js, Python, Java) technologies, often supported by a relevant degree or coding bootcamp experience. Familiarity with frameworks like React or Angular, databases like MongoDB or SQL, version control systems (e.g., Git), and cloud platforms is typically expected, alongside certification in relevant technologies being a plus. Problem-solving, effective communication, and adaptability distinguish top performers in this field. These skills and qualities enable developers to build robust, scalable applications and collaborate efficiently across the software development lifecycle.

What is the difference between Full Stack Software Developer vs Front End Developer?

AspectFull Stack Software DeveloperFront End Developer

A Front End Developer specializes in creating engaging user interfaces and improving user experience, focusing mainly on client-side technologies.

Can I learn full stack software in 3 months?

Full stack software development involves learning both front-end and back-end technologies, which typically requires several months of dedicated study and practice. While some intensive bootcamps claim to teach foundational skills in around 3 months, becoming proficient usually takes longer and depends on prior experience, learning pace, and the complexity of projects undertaken.

Is full stack software a good career?

Full stack software development is a viable career option, as it involves working with both front-end and back-end technologies, making developers versatile and in demand. It often requires knowledge of programming languages, frameworks, and tools like JavaScript, React, and Node.js, and can offer opportunities in various industries with competitive salaries. Success in this field depends on continuous learning and adapting to new technologies.

Is full stack software still in demand?

Full stack software development remains in high demand due to the need for versatile developers skilled in both front-end and back-end technologies. Employers seek professionals proficient in frameworks like React, Node.js, and cloud platforms, making it a valuable and stable career choice.

Job description

About Mariana Minerals
Mariana Minerals is a software-first, vertically integrated minerals company on a mission to supply the critical minerals powering modern energy, AI, and defense technologies. We're reimagining the minerals supply chain by combining deep industry expertise with advanced software, automation, and data-driven decision-making.
Role Overview
Mariana Minerals is looking for a highly motivated Full Stack Software Engineer to work on building the critical minerals supply chain to support the world's energy transition.
As a Full Stack Software Engineer at Mariana Minerals, you will lead the development and deployment of software to accelerate the engineering and construction of physical infrastructure that is critical to building the minerals supply chain. Responsibilities will include building integrations with the existing software tools for engineering and construction, extending these tools to fill in gaps and address pain points identified by Mariana's internal engineering and construction teams, working with Mariana's ML engineers to integrate LLMs to tackle specific challenges around unstructured data ingestion and understanding, and working with Mariana's internal teams to develop a new "operating system" for the engineering, construction, and operation of Mariana's mineral processing facilities.
What You'll Do
  • Work closely with Mariana's internal engineering, construction, and operations teams to identify and build internal software tools to accelerate the deployment of Mariana's mineral processing facilities.
  • Build data integrations with the existing suite of engineering/construction tools such as Autodesk.
  • Build net new web experiences and applications that will be used by Mariana's internal teams and partners to help build capital project faster and more efficiently.
  • Evaluate existing software in the ecosystem to assist Mariana's internal teams
  • Work closely with Mariana's ML engineers to implement novel LLM powered experiences that assist Mariana's internal teams.
  • Assist with the data architecture for Mariana's data pipelines to feed the training of novel ML models that control Mariana's mineral processing facilities and provide visibility into the operation of the facilities to the internal Mariana team.

What You'll Bring
  • Strong understanding of software engineering in a professional capacity (1.5+ years preferred).
  • Ability to work with non-software stakeholders to identify pain points and needs, scope level of effort required for new features, and then drive implementation of these features.
  • Self-starter mindset, ability to bring clarity to high ambiguity situations, and excitement to work with non-software stakeholders directly.
  • Ability to work across the entire stack from deploying servers to writing front end code and everything in between (or demonstrated proficiency in one of these areas and the desire to expand your skillset).
Our culture is built on four principles:
Everyone Gets Home Safe. We never put speed or cost ahead of people.
Extreme Ownership. We take full responsibility for outcomes, relentlessly driving toward solutions.
Engineer Out Requirements, then Automate. We simplify, optimize, and then automate for scale.
Share Your Legos. We collaborate openly, share knowledge, and empower each other to build bigger, better solutions.
Join us as we build the future of responsible mineral sourcing and supply!
