What is a full stack software developer?

Full Stack Software Developers are professionals skilled in both front-end and back-end web development. They are capable of designing, building, and maintaining all parts of a web application, including user interfaces, server-side logic, databases, and integration with other services. Their expertise allows them to work on entire projects from start to finish, making them versatile and valuable team members. Full Stack Developers typically use a variety of programming languages and frameworks to accomplish their tasks.

How do full stack software developers typically balance front-end and back-end responsibilities within a team?

Full Stack Software Developers are often expected to seamlessly switch between front-end and back-end tasks, depending on the project's needs and the team's structure. In most environments, you may collaborate closely with UI/UX designers for front-end work and with DevOps or database specialists for back-end aspects. Balancing these responsibilities requires good communication and adaptability, as priorities can shift rapidly during a development cycle. Over time, you may find opportunities to specialize further or advance into technical leadership roles, depending on your strengths and interests.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full stack software developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack Software Developer, you need strong proficiency in both front-end (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and back-end (e.g., Node.js, Python, Java) technologies, often supported by a relevant degree or coding bootcamp experience. Familiarity with frameworks like React or Angular, databases like MongoDB or SQL, version control systems (e.g., Git), and cloud platforms is typically expected, alongside certification in relevant technologies being a plus. Problem-solving, effective communication, and adaptability distinguish top performers in this field. These skills and qualities enable developers to build robust, scalable applications and collaborate efficiently across the software development lifecycle.

What is the difference between Full Stack Software Developer vs Front End Developer?

AspectFull Stack Software DeveloperFront End Developer

A Front End Developer specializes in creating engaging user interfaces and improving user experience, focusing mainly on client-side technologies.

Can I learn full stack software in 3 months?

Full stack software development involves learning both front-end and back-end technologies, which typically requires several months of dedicated study and practice. While some intensive bootcamps claim to teach foundational skills in around 3 months, becoming proficient usually takes longer and depends on prior experience, learning pace, and the complexity of projects undertaken.

Is full stack software a good career?

Full stack software development is a viable career option, as it involves working with both front-end and back-end technologies, making developers versatile and in demand. It often requires knowledge of programming languages, frameworks, and tools like JavaScript, React, and Node.js, and can offer opportunities in various industries with competitive salaries. Success in this field depends on continuous learning and adapting to new technologies.

Is full stack software still in demand?

Full stack software development remains in high demand due to the need for versatile developers skilled in both front-end and back-end technologies. Employers seek professionals proficient in frameworks like React, Node.js, and cloud platforms, making it a valuable and stable career choice.

Job description

OVERVIEW - US ONLY Apply

Ontrac Solutions is seeking an experienced Senior Full-Stack Software Engineer to support a critical customer engagement. This role suits an engineer who is equally at home across the stack and who can work through an established codebase with confidence understanding how existing features behave before extending, refactoring, or retiring them.

You will build and extend full-stack features across React frontends and Node.js and Go backend services, design and query both PostgreSQL and MongoDB, and implement authentication, role-based access control, and authorization across the services in scope. You will work closely with our program manager and engagement leads, together with customer stakeholders, to keep work moving cleanly from initial definition through to final delivery.

This is a role for someone comfortable in someone else's codebase. A substantial part of the work is establishing how current functionality operates, then refactoring or decommissioning legacy components without regressing behaviour already in place.

Expected start date: September 14, 2026

WHAT YOUR APPLICATION MUST CLEARLY SHOW

We read resumes rather than scoring keywords, and we verify what we can. Your application will move fastest if it makes the following easy to find:

Go you have actually shipped name the service, what it did, and roughly what load it carried. A languages list containing 'Go' is not evidence, and we treat it as unproven.

Production React and production Node.js work, named by project, not listed as a skills keyword.

Both datastores, separately where you designed a PostgreSQL schema, and where you designed and queried MongoDB. If you are strong in one and light in the other, say so; we would rather know.

Authentication and authorization you implemented name the mechanism (RBAC model, OAuth/OIDC, JWT, Cognito, Keycloak, Auth0) and what it protected.

Unit and integration tests you wrote name the frameworks and what the tests actually covered.

A refactor or decommission you led in a codebase you did not originally write: what was retired, how you established it was safe to retire, and what went wrong.

Public artifacts, if you have them GitHub, a portfolio, a shipped app, published work. Include the links. They are the fastest route through our screening.

Honest gaps are welcome and are not disqualifying. We are hiring a strong engineer, not a checklist candidates who tell us where they are light are treated better than candidates who claim everything.

Shortly after you apply you will receive a short role-specific questionnaire completing it promptly is the fastest way to move into screening.
