What Is a Full Stack Software Engineer?

A full stack software engineer develops all aspects of a software application, from the user interface to the back-end database. As a full stack software engineer, your job duties include gathering customer requirements, writing the code to develop the application, and troubleshooting the application for any issues. The qualifications to pursue a career as a full stack software engineer include an associate or bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field and proficiency in a variety of coding languages and frameworks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Full Stack Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack Software Engineer, you need strong proficiency in both front-end (e.g., HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and back-end (e.g., Node.js, Python, Java) development, typically supported by a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with frameworks (like React or Angular), version control (such as Git), databases (SQL/NoSQL), and cloud platforms is essential, and certifications like AWS Certified Developer can be beneficial. Problem-solving ability, collaboration, and adaptability are vital soft skills that help engineers navigate complex projects and work effectively in teams. These skills ensure the ability to deliver robust, scalable, and user-friendly applications that meet dynamic business needs.

What is the difference between Full Stack Software Engineer vs Front End Developer?

AspectFull Stack Software EngineerFront End Developer
Required SkillsProficiency in both front-end and back-end technologies, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, server-side languages, and databases.Specializes in client-side technologies like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and frameworks such as React or Angular.
Work EnvironmentWorks on both server and client-side development, often involved in full project lifecycle.Focuses primarily on designing and implementing user interfaces and user experience.
Common UsageUsed in full-stack development teams, startups, and projects requiring versatile developers.Found in teams emphasizing UI/UX, web design, and front-end frameworks.

While both roles require strong JavaScript skills, Full Stack Software Engineers handle both front-end and back-end development, whereas Front End Developers focus solely on the user interface and experience. The choice depends on whether you prefer a broader development scope or specialization in UI design.

What are Full Stack Software Engineers?

Full Stack Software Engineers are professionals skilled in both front-end and back-end development. They are capable of designing, building, and maintaining the user interface (client-side) as well as the server logic, databases, and application architecture (server-side). This means they can work on projects from start to finish, handling everything from user experience to data management. Full Stack Software Engineers often use a variety of programming languages and frameworks, making them versatile and valuable members of a development team.

How do Full Stack Software Engineers typically collaborate with other team members during a development project?

Full Stack Software Engineers often work closely with front-end and back-end developers, UI/UX designers, product managers, and QA testers throughout the software development lifecycle. Collaboration typically involves participating in agile ceremonies such as daily stand-ups, sprint planning, and code reviews to ensure alignment and progress. They are expected to communicate effectively across disciplines, help troubleshoot issues that span both client and server sides, and contribute to shared documentation. This collaborative environment helps ensure that solutions are cohesive, scalable, and meet user requirements.

Job description

Your Impact

As a Staff Software Engineer on Axon's Real-Time Operations (RTO) team, you will make a direct impact on our mission to Protect Life. RTO builds the situational awareness software that emergency responders and security operations teams rely on in the moments that matter most, and the experiences they touch have to be fast, reliable, and trustworthy under real pressure.

Fusus, our real-time crime center and operations platform, is growing fast: from local public safety agencies into the enterprise space, and from the US into international regions including the UK, Australia, and Europe. That growth means many market verticals, regulatory environments, and customer workflows converging on a shared platform. We need a technical leader who can define how we build client experiences that scale to millions of users across all of them.

In this role you will own the client architecture and frontend foundations strategy for RTO. You will define how we develop, compose, and ship client experiences so that Axon can deliver unique, vertical-specific workflows at scale on a common foundation. You will reason from first principles about how the system should work, not just how it works today, and you will set the technical direction that lets feature teams move fast without fragmenting the platform.

What You'll Do

Location: This role is based out of our Boston Office and follows a hybrid schedule. We rely on in-person collaboration and ask that team members work onsite Tuesdays through Fridays, with the flexibility to work remotely on Mondays, unless there is an approved workplace accommodation. We believe that connection fuels innovation, and our in-office culture is designed to foster meaningful teamwork, mentorship, and shared success.
Reports to: Director of Engineering (RTO)

  • Define the client architecture strategy for RTO: how we build, compose, and ship client experiences so Axon can deliver unique workflows and experiences at scale across a broad set of market verticals and international regions.
  • Shape how the platform supports configurability and extensibility, so vertical- and region-specific experiences can be built on a shared foundation rather than forked or rebuilt for each market.
  • Set and evolve the frontend architecture that underpins this strategy, including module boundaries, shared component and platform libraries, build and delivery systems, and the patterns that let many feature teams own and ship their code safely and independently.
  • Steward cross-cutting platform concerns that span every client experience: auth and session management, logging, metrics, localization and internationalization, accessibility, and UI cohesion across products and regions.
  • Drive client reliability, performance, and quality at scale, owning the bar for load times, error rates, observability, and resilience for mission-critical real-time experiences serving a rapidly growing global user base.
  • Lead the use of AI-assisted engineering across the client development lifecycle, establishing reusable workflows, review protocols, and quality gates that make AI adoption practical and safe across teams.
  • Review key designs and architecture from engineers across RTO and partner teams, enforcing a high bar on availability, performance, maintainability, and usability.
  • Mentor and grow senior engineers, acting as a force multiplier who develops the next set of technical leaders for the organization.
  • Partner closely with product, design, and engineering leaders to translate roadmap goals across verticals and regions into sound technical strategy and durable architecture.
 What You Bring
  • 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a track record of technical leadership at the Staff or Principal level.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
  • A first-principles thinker who reasons about systems from the ground up rather than by analogy to what already exists, and who can frame the right long-term architecture amid ambiguity.
  • Proven experience designing and building systems that scale to millions of users, with depth that spans the full stack rather than the frontend alone.
  • Deep frontend expertise: strong command of TypeScript and modern frameworks (Angular and/or React), and experience defining frontend architecture at scale (modular package ecosystems or module federation, shared component libraries, build and delivery systems).
  • Experience building configurable or extensible platforms that serve multiple customer segments, verticals, or regions on a common foundation.
  • A track record of improving reliability and performance of production systems at scale, including observability, load-time and error-rate reduction, and resilience.
  • Demonstrated, daily use of AI-assisted engineering tools across the development lifecycle, with the judgment to validate output against quality, security, and performance standards.
  • Strong, structured communication and the ability to influence engineering and product leaders across team and pillar boundaries.
  • A customer-obsessed mindset, with the ability to walk in the user's shoes across diverse markets and balance competing business and engineering priorities.
  • A high standard of excellence and a genuine curiosity for raising the capabilities of the engineers around you.
 Benefits that Benefit You
  • Competitive salary and 401k with employer match
  • Discretionary paid time off
  • Paid parental leave for all
  • Medical, Dental, Vision plans
  • Fitness Programs
  • Emotional & Mental Wellness support
  • Learning & Development programs
  • Employee Resource Groups (ERGs)
  • And yes, we have snacks in our offices

Benefits listed herein may vary depending on the nature of your employment and the location where you work.
