What Is a Full Stack Software Engineer?

A full stack software engineer develops all aspects of a software application, from the user interface to the back-end database. As a full stack software engineer, your job duties include gathering customer requirements, writing the code to develop the application, and troubleshooting the application for any issues. The qualifications to pursue a career as a full stack software engineer include an associate or bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field and proficiency in a variety of coding languages and frameworks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Full Stack Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack Software Engineer, you need strong proficiency in both front-end (e.g., HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and back-end (e.g., Node.js, Python, Java) development, typically supported by a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with frameworks (like React or Angular), version control (such as Git), databases (SQL/NoSQL), and cloud platforms is essential, and certifications like AWS Certified Developer can be beneficial. Problem-solving ability, collaboration, and adaptability are vital soft skills that help engineers navigate complex projects and work effectively in teams. These skills ensure the ability to deliver robust, scalable, and user-friendly applications that meet dynamic business needs.

What is the difference between Full Stack Software Engineer vs Front End Developer?

AspectFull Stack Software EngineerFront End Developer

They are capable of designing, building, and maintaining the user interface (client-side) as well as the server logic, databases, and application architecture (server-side). This means they can work on projects from start to finish, handling everything from user experience to data management. Full Stack Software Engineers often use a variety of programming languages and frameworks, making them versatile and valuable members of a development team.

How do Full Stack Software Engineers typically collaborate with other team members during a development project?

Full Stack Software Engineers often work closely with front-end and back-end developers, UI/UX designers, product managers, and QA testers throughout the software development lifecycle. Collaboration typically involves participating in agile ceremonies such as daily stand-ups, sprint planning, and code reviews to ensure alignment and progress. They are expected to communicate effectively across disciplines, help troubleshoot issues that span both client and server sides, and contribute to shared documentation. This collaborative environment helps ensure that solutions are cohesive, scalable, and meet user requirements.

Job description

Do you want to be a part of the clean energy movement? Are you passionate about improving our environment for this generation and those to follow? Are you ready to take on new challenges and collaborate with a future-focused team leading the way into new markets? Join Nexamp!
This is where you can learn from industry leaders and become one yourself. It's fast-paced, mission-based work that challenges the status quo. Be on the team that's changing the world.
What we're looking for:
We're looking for a Senior Full Stack Software Developer to help us build and optimize tech solutions to accelerate our sustainable energy future. At Nexamp, you'll be part of an engineering squad focused on multiplying the efficiency of how we raise and deploy billions of dollars of capital into low-downtime solar power plants. You'll be the front-end lead on the squad and will drive impact by writing quality code, steering projects from conception to completion, helping refine our processes, and guiding more junior team members. This role will be hybrid, based out of our Boston office, and you will report to your squad's Tech Lead.
What you'll do:
  • Internalize our objectives and deliver measurable change for Nexamp and our customers.
  • Design, implement, and deploy reliable and efficient production software in our React/Django/Azure stack.
  • Actively collaborate in sprint planning, execution, code reviews, demos, and retrospectives.
  • Own design decisions across our React applications and establish and execute scalable patterns, standards, and best practices for the squad.
  • Guide and inspire more junior developers across the organization through mentorship and collaboration.
  • Continually seek ways to level-up your own skills and make a bigger impact throughout the company.

What you'll bring:
  • 7+ years of full stack software development experience at companies with 10 or more developers.
  • Experience architecting, building, and deploying consumer-facing frontend applications in React and Typescript.
  • Experience developing and optimizing web-based solutions in modern Python, ideally using Django, FastAPI, or similar frameworks.
  • Robust understanding of web standards, infrastructure (databases, storage, caching, content delivery, etc.), and cloud platform offerings.
  • Effectively communicate and collaborate with users and business stakeholders, facilitating software and process requirements.
  • Experience leveraging debugging expertise and a proven track record of independently solving problems.
  • Solid understanding of SQL and relational databases.
  • Familiarity with version control systems like Git, CI/CD pipelines for automated testing & deployment, and infrastructure tools like Terraform.
  • Understanding of cutting edge AI tools and a commitment to leveraging them to rapidly deliver high quality software.
  • Ownership mentality and initiative to make improvements to code, processes, and user experiences across the organization.
  • Can-do attitude toward architecting right-sized solutions to real-world business problems.
  • Commitment to Nexamp's mission and have a passion for solving tomorrow's climate crisis today.
  • Demonstrated experience in effectively communicating information, ideas, and perspectives with people inside and beyond your organization.
  • Experience in showcasing initiative to make improvements to current work, processes, products, and services across the organization. We value accountability and an ownership mentality.
  • Ability to ask appropriate questions, analyze data, identify the root causes of problems, and present creative solutions.
  • Expertise in building strong internal and external relationships with customers and stakeholders, instilling trust and loyalty across the industry.
  • Eagerness to develop a fundamental understanding of how Nexamp operates and then apply that knowledge effectively to inform business decisions.

If you don't meet 100% of the above qualifications, but see yourself contributing, please apply.
At Nexamp, our mission is to build the future of energy so it is clean, simple, and accessible for all. We are committed to providing a work environment free from discrimination. We are proud to be an equal opportunity employer. This includes our competitive compensation package; a 401(k) employer-match; health, dental, and vision insurance starting day one; flexible paid time off and holiday PTO; commuter benefits, and cell phone reimbursement. We have headquarters in Boston, MA and Chicago, IL, in addition to growing offices nationwide. We provide healthy snacks, coffee, service days and other volunteer opportunities, company outings, and more!
Compensation:
The reasonably estimated salary for this role at Nexamp ranges from $170,000 - $190,000. In addition to base salary, the competitive compensation package may include, depending on the role, participation in an incentive program linked to performance (for example, annual bonus programs based on individual and company performance, non-annual sales incentive plans, or other non-annual incentive plans). Additionally, you may be eligible to participate in the Company's stock option plan. Actual base salary may vary based upon, but is not limited to, skills and qualifications, internal equity, performance, and geographic location.
