What is a full stack software engineer?

A full stack software engineer develops all aspects of a software application, from the user interface to the back-end database. As a full stack software engineer, your job duties include gathering customer requirements, writing the code to develop the application, and troubleshooting the application for any issues. The qualifications to pursue a career as a full stack software engineer include an associate or bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field and proficiency in a variety of coding languages and frameworks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full stack software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack Software Engineer, you need strong proficiency in both front-end (e.g., HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and back-end (e.g., Node.js, Python, Java) development, typically supported by a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with frameworks (like React or Angular), version control (such as Git), databases (SQL/NoSQL), and cloud platforms is essential, and certifications like AWS Certified Developer can be beneficial. Problem-solving ability, collaboration, and adaptability are vital soft skills that help engineers navigate complex projects and work effectively in teams. These skills ensure the ability to deliver robust, scalable, and user-friendly applications that meet dynamic business needs.

How do full stack software engineers typically collaborate with other team members during a development project?

Full Stack Software Engineers often work closely with front-end and back-end developers, UI/UX designers, product managers, and QA testers throughout the software development lifecycle. Collaboration typically involves participating in agile ceremonies such as daily stand-ups, sprint planning, and code reviews to ensure alignment and progress. They are expected to communicate effectively across disciplines, help troubleshoot issues that span both client and server sides, and contribute to shared documentation. This collaborative environment helps ensure that solutions are cohesive, scalable, and meet user requirements.

What is the difference between Full Stack Software Engineer vs Front End Developer?

AspectFull Stack Software EngineerFront End Developer
Required SkillsProficiency in both front-end and back-end technologies, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, server-side languages, and databases.Specializes in client-side technologies like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and frameworks such as React or Angular.
Work EnvironmentWorks on both server and client-side development, often involved in full project lifecycle.Focuses primarily on designing and implementing user interfaces and user experience.
Common UsageUsed in full-stack development teams, startups, and projects requiring versatile developers.Found in teams emphasizing UI/UX, web design, and front-end frameworks.

While both roles require strong JavaScript skills, Full Stack Software Engineers handle both front-end and back-end development, whereas Front End Developers focus solely on the user interface and experience. The choice depends on whether you prefer a broader development scope or specialization in UI design.

Are full stack software engineers in demand?

Full stack software engineers are in high demand due to their ability to work on both front-end and back-end development, making them valuable in many industries. Companies seek these professionals for their versatility, often requiring knowledge of frameworks, programming languages, and tools like JavaScript, Python, and cloud platforms. The demand is expected to grow as digital transformation continues across sectors.

Can I learn full stack software engineer in 3 months?

Becoming a full stack software engineer in three months is challenging, as it typically requires several months to years of consistent learning to gain proficiency in both front-end and back-end development, including skills in programming languages, frameworks, databases, and version control. Intensive bootcamps or self-study programs can accelerate learning, but practical experience and project work are essential for job readiness.

Job description

About Bish's RV

Bish's RV is one of the largest family-owned RV dealership groups in the country — 28 locations coast to coast, 1,200+ team members, and record growth with more on the way. We're not treating technology as plumbing. We're building real enterprise software from the ground up, powered by modern tooling and AI, and using it to change how the RV industry sells and services.

That's where you come in.

Why this is a good job

At Bish's you'll work on a small, fast-moving team that is building systems the business runs on.  Leadership here sees technology as a competitive advantage and you'll see your work in stores and in customers' hands within weeks, not years.

Along the way you'll touch nearly every corner of the business: sales, finance, service, inventory, and parts. Few engineering roles let you go this wide and this deep at the same time.

What you'll build

  • Full-stack applications — customer-facing and internal tools that redefine the RV sales and service experience, built on a modern React/Next.js and TypeScript front end with Node and Python services behind them.
  • The integration fabric — the APIs and integration layers that connect our core applications, data platform, and third-party systems so data flows cleanly across sales, finance, service, and parts.
  • Data-informed features — applications wired into our analytics platform so the business runs on real, timely information.
  • AI-powered capabilities — features and workflows that put AI to work for our salespeople, service teams, and customers, not as a bolt-on but as part of how the product works.

What you'll do

  • Own features end to end — from architecture and design through build, deployment, and iteration. You'll ship, watch it run, and make it better.
  • Build and maintain APIs and integrations that keep our platforms and third-party systems talking to each other reliably and securely.
  • Develop with modern AI tooling as a first-class part of your workflow — using AI coding agents (Claude Code and similar) to scaffold, implement, test, and refactor faster, while applying the judgment to know when the output is right, when it's wrong, and what's safe to ship.
  • Deploy and automate confidently — CI/CD pipelines, Infrastructure as Code, and modern deployment (GitHub Actions, Vercel, AWS) so releases are fast, repeatable, and “non-events” in the best way.
  • Build security in — sensible practices to protect applications and the sales, finance, and customer data that flow through them.
  • Partner with the business — including the people building their own tools. Some of our business teams are building their own AI tooling and agents. You'll work alongside them: providing the governed platforms, APIs, and guardrails they build on, leveling up what they've prototyped, and turning promising experiments into production-grade systems.
  • Experiment and bring ideas. Stay ahead of where the tooling is going and help decide what we adopt next.

The kind of engineer we're looking for

  • Forward-thinking and fast. You move quickly, prototype to learn, and are comfortable building in areas where the requirements aren't perfectly defined yet.
  • AI-native. You already use AI development tools daily and know how to get real leverage from them.  You understand that verifying, guiding, and architecting matters more than raw code output.
  • A genuine communicator. You can explain a technical tradeoff to another engineer, a finance leader, a service manager, or an executive and be understood by all of them. On a lean team, clear communication is a core skill, not a soft one.
  • A partner, not a purist. You'd rather understand what the business is trying to accomplish and help build the right thing than defend an ivory-tower architecture.
  • An owner. You take responsibility for outcomes, not just tickets, and you sweat the details that make software successful and reliable.

What we're looking for

Required

  • 5+ years building and shipping production software as a full-stack engineer
  • Strong proficiency with a modern web stack: TypeScript, React, and Next.js
  • Solid back-end experience with Node and/or Python, and comfort designing and consuming REST APIs and integrations
  • Working knowledge of PostgreSQL (and relational data modeling)
  • Experience with CI/CD, cloud deployment, and Infrastructure as Code (e.g., GitHub Actions, Vercel, AWS)
  • Fluent, daily use of AI development tools and sound judgment about their output
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, and the ability to manage competing priorities on a fast-moving team

Nice to have

  • Experience with lightweight SaaS database systems such as Supabase or Neon, and event-driven or microservice architectures
  • Experience integrating enterprise systems (DMS, ERP, CRM, or finance/payment platforms)
  • Experience with data/analytics platforms (e.g., Databricks) and event logging
  • Experience building agentic or LLM-powered features, or working with MCP servers and AI SDKs
  • Exposure to retail, dealership, automotive, or other multi-location businesses

Why Bish's RV

Our culture is built on our core values — we are Genuine, Fun, and Driven by Results — and on being "Different with a Purpose."

  • Comprehensive benefits package including medical, vision, dental, and supplemental coverages
  • 401(k) matching
