What does a Full Stack Software Engineer Intern do?

A Full Stack Software Engineer Intern assists with the development of both the front-end and back-end components of web applications. They work under the guidance of experienced engineers to write code, debug issues, and help integrate different technologies across the software stack. Typical tasks include building user interfaces, connecting to databases, and testing new features. This role helps interns gain hands-on experience with various programming languages, frameworks, and tools commonly used in software development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Full Stack Software Engineer Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack Software Engineer Intern, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as JavaScript, Python, or Java), basic web development concepts, and enrollment in a relevant degree program like computer science. Familiarity with frameworks (like React or Node.js), version control systems (such as Git), and cloud platforms are often expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, eagerness to learn, and effective teamwork set standout interns apart. These skills and qualities enable interns to contribute meaningfully to projects, adapt quickly to new technologies, and collaborate efficiently in dynamic development environments.

What types of projects and technologies do Full Stack Software Engineer Interns typically work on during their internship?

Full Stack Software Engineer Interns often work on a variety of projects that span both front-end and back-end development. This may include building user interfaces with frameworks like React or Angular, developing APIs using Node.js or Python, and working with databases such as MongoDB or PostgreSQL. Interns usually collaborate closely with senior engineers, designers, and product managers, gaining exposure to the full software development lifecycle. The work environment tends to be fast-paced and collaborative, offering valuable opportunities to learn modern development practices and tools.

Job description

Full-Stack Software Engineer

Type: Full-time · On-site · NYC (Flatiron)
Compensation: $180K–$230K + 0.1–0.5% equity
Visa sponsorship: Available on a case-by-case basis

About the Company

We are an early-stage, venture-backed company building modern workplace safety infrastructure, where real-time location, AI-native software, and rugged IoT hardware converge to detect issues and deliver help exactly when and where it is needed. Founded in 2024 by a team drawn from leading consumer hardware, technology, and physical-security companies, we already protect schools, universities, and frontline workplaces nationwide, with 10+ live paying customer sites. We are backed by top VCs and closing our Series A, going after a $30B market growing roughly 20% annually that is still dominated by legacy players.

Team size: 15 · Industry: Security, Hardware, AI, B2B · Office: NYC (Flatiron)

Why Join
  • Mission-driven: Protecting 110M American workers — teachers, nurses, hotel staff, and retail workers — across schools, hospitals, hotels, and workplaces.
  • Real traction: Hardware coming off real manufacturing lines with 10+ live paying customer sites nationwide.
  • Strong pedigree: Engineers from MIT, CMU, Georgia Tech, UPenn, and Princeton.
  • De-risked early stage: Closing Series A, with meaningful equity upside at an early but de-risked stage.
  • High ownership: A small, flat team means direct influence on architecture, product direction, and technical decisions, with direct access to the founders.
  • In-person culture: In-person Flatiron office with in-office meals.
The Role

An early-stage full-stack role working directly with the founders and early engineers to evolve the core platform, shape new features, and scale a system already protecting thousands of people. You will make foundational decisions on architecture, tech stack, and product direction alongside the founding designer as the company expands into new verticals.

What You Will Be Doing
  • Building and shipping new features that make the platform more intuitive, reliable, and scalable.
  • Improving core infrastructure to keep the system live and performant.
  • Integrating new customers onto the platform.
  • Interfacing with customers to understand their needs and translate them into product solutions.

Tech stack: React, TypeScript, AWS

Requirements
  • 4–7 years of experience as a full-stack software engineer, with at least 1 year at a startup or scale-up.
  • Experience building a product from zero to one, either solo or with significant individual ownership on a team.
  • Experience at a high-growth, early-stage startup (Seed to Series D).
  • Proficiency with React, TypeScript, and AWS.
  • Strong product and design instincts, ideally with a portfolio or examples.
  • Degree in Computer Science or a related field.
  • At least one clear signal of excellence (e.g., a top school or well-known companies).
Nice to Have
  • IoT experience, or experience building software for hardware-connected products.
Interview Process
  1. Founder Screen (30–40 mins): Conversational interview with the co-founder/CTO covering your background, what drives you, and a walkthrough of past technical work.
  2. Coding Interview (45 mins): Live coding interview with one of the engineers to assess how you think through problems on the spot.
  3. On-site (3–4 hours): A mix of behavioral and technical sessions; you will meet members across the software, hardware, firmware, and go-to-market teams, with additional programming and whiteboard questions.
  4. Offer extended.
