About Vision

Vision is a leading GovTech firm providing market leading software to the public sector throughout the United States. Today, more than 430 cities, towns and counties are part of the Vision family, including marquee customers such as New York City and Washington, DC. As we continue to rapidy grow, we pride ourselves on the intense loyalty of our customer base, more than 50% of which have been with Vision for over 20 years. Learn more at www.vgsi.com.

The person we are looking for

This is a unique opportunity for a Senior Engineer who enjoys the "Product Owner" side of software development as much as the technical execution. You will be the primary technical lead for a mission-critical CAMA system, serving a stable base of 45 long-term customers.

We are looking for a self-directed professional to take full ownership of this product's lifecycle. You are someone who finds satisfaction in high-level autonomy and enjoys being the bridge between internal stakeholders and technical delivery. Beyond writing code, you will be the key architect of our delivery process—modernizing how we document, track, and release software to ensure this product remains a gold standard for our users.

Summary of Role & Responsibilities

The Senior Software Engineer will be the lead steward for our CAMA application, responsible for both technical execution and the professionalization of the product delivery lifecycle. In this role, you aren’t just completing coding tasks; you are a key partner in managing the pipeline of requests.

Key roles & responsibilities include

  • Partner with Support and internal teams to evaluate incoming requests, ensuring they are well-defined and validated before execution.
  • Independently ramp up on the application's Delphi code base to become the primary subject matter expert on the system, ensuring continuity as it enters a sustainment phase.
  • Lead the move to a more modern SDLC by transitioning to GitHub, establishing formal release notes, and creating the technical documentation foundation necessary for long-term stability.
  • Deliver minor enhancements and annual updates while maintaining rigorous standards to prevent regressions and ensure high system reliability for our 45 customers.
  • Provide weekly plans and output summaries for broader team review to align activities with strategic plans.
  • Learn application design to a sufficient level to perform customer data conversions to migrate a customer from a legacy CAMA system to our CAMA system.
  • Participate in cross functional technical design sessions to support strategic technical discussions involving CAMA

Professional experience than can help you succeed

Can you believe that Woolly Mammoths were still alive when tax bills were first issued? Taxation has existed in various forms since civilization began! The earliest known tax records, dating from approximately six thousand years B.C., were in the form of clay tablets found in the ancient city-state of Lagash, which is in modern day Iraq.

It’s amazing, but true! Leading a digital transformation in an industry with that level of maturity requires more than just technical aptitude. It takes creativity, patience, and persistence! Nevertheless, it certainly doesn’t hurt to have a wealth of technical experience. Below is a list of experiences that would help you succeed in this role. It’s okay if you don’t meet each item if you are willing to dig into the challenges and learn fast!

  • 7+ years of software development experience with strong proficiency in Delphi and SQL.
  • Proven experience in technical design and application architecture for enterprise systems
  • Experience with SQL Server and data modeling
  • In-depth knowledge of Structured Query Language (SQL)
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Flexible, team player, “get-it-done” personality
  • Ability to organize and plan work independently
  • Ability to work in a rapidly changing environment
  • Ability to multi-task and context-switch effectively between different activities and teams
