Job description

This position is based in Amarillo, TX 79101 on a hybrid (3 days per week in office) work schedule. It is an hourly, non-exempt full-time position with full Xcel Energy company benefits.

Position Summary
Plans, designs, and develops construction drawings for various projects from project scope general guidelines. Performs non-routine and complex assignments involving responsibility for planning and conducting a complete project of relatively limited scope or a portion of a larger more diverse project. Selects and adapts plans, techniques, designs, and coordinates the work. Reviews, analyzes, and integrates the technical requirements and design approach. Completed work is reviewed for technical accuracy and satisfaction of requirements. May train and be assisted by lower grades. May be designated as the technical services design lead to coordinate work on assigned project. Provide field support including field verifications for retrofit projects, as-built documentation, and installation supervision.
Essential Responsibilities

  • Design and draft a complete set of construction drawings.

  • Exercise independent judgment by utilizing the correct design criteria based on knowledge from vendor data and project scope.

  • Perform a complete design check of lower level designers, by project assignment, to assure applicable code standards, design standards, accuracy, spelling and design completeness.

  • Review manufacturer's drawings and other discipline drawings and any existing plan drawings for physical interferences.

  • Communicate with the project engineer and other disciplines to resolve any design problems with the manufacturer's drawings or interferences.

  • Supervises and directs other designers and drafters during the development of project design tasks.

  • Assure the company quality assurance procedures are followed in completion of assigned tasks.

  • Demonstrate the ability to effectively utilize various computerized design/drafting software applications according to project requirements. Demonstrate the ability to produce simple to complex engineering drawings in a 2-D or 3-D environment.


Minimum Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.

  • Minimum of Associates Degree in one of the following fields of study: drafting, design, automation, electronics, mechatronics, engineering, GIS, or other related field of study.

  • In lieu of an Associates. Degree: 5+ years of design experience or equivalent job-related experience in one of the following: design, construction, or electronics providing equivalent experience and knowledge - preferably 3 years as an Xcel Energy Designer.

  • Mastery in one or more of the following: GIS, design software, work management programs, and related systems required.

  • Proficient using AutoCAD and/or MicroStation.

  • Knowledge of construction standards, materials, and technical codes required. Demonstrate the ability to function as project design lead with ability to coordinate overall project design including drawing development supporting construction.

  • Able to perform field site walkdowns independently.

  • Ability for Construction coordination with field personnel, contractors, and vendors. Mastery of Windows operating system, Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Excel, Word, Access).

  • Highly effective communication and innovative problem-solving skills.

  • Self-starter, able to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Valid driver license.
