What is a full stack Python developer?

A Full Stack Python Developer is a software engineer who is proficient in both front-end and back-end development using Python as the primary programming language for server-side logic. They are responsible for designing, building, and maintaining web applications, ensuring seamless integration between the user interface and the server. Full Stack Python Developers typically work with frameworks like Django or Flask for the backend, and use technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for the frontend. Their skill set allows them to manage databases, create APIs, and handle deployment, making them versatile contributors to software development teams.

What is a full stack Python developer?

A full stack Python developer uses the Python programming language for the development of the entire technology stack of a web application. Python is a computer programming language that has become one of the more popular for application development. In this job, your duties revolve around developing both front-end and back-end components, which are primarily interfaces and application code, respectively. As a full stack Python developer, you must understand how the entire technology stack functions and have hands-on experience with each component.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full stack Python developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack Python Developer, you need proficiency in Python programming, front-end (HTML, CSS, JavaScript), back-end frameworks like Django or Flask, and a solid understanding of databases and RESTful APIs. Familiarity with version control systems (such as Git), cloud platforms (AWS, Azure), and containerization tools (Docker) is typically required, along with relevant certifications being an advantage. Problem-solving, adaptability, and strong communication skills help developers collaborate effectively and address complex technical challenges. These combined technical and soft skills are crucial for delivering robust, scalable applications and ensuring smooth teamwork in dynamic development environments.

What are some common challenges full stack Python developers face when managing both front-end and back-end tasks?

Full Stack Python Developers often juggle multiple responsibilities, including designing user interfaces and ensuring robust server-side logic. One frequent challenge is efficiently switching between front-end frameworks (like React or Angular) and back-end Python code, which requires staying up-to-date with technologies on both ends. Additionally, integrating APIs, troubleshooting cross-platform issues, and maintaining code consistency can be complex in fast-paced environments. Effective communication with UI/UX designers and DevOps teams is also crucial to ensure seamless deployments and user experiences.

What is the difference between Full Stack Python Developer vs Backend Python Developer?

AspectFull Stack Python DeveloperBackend Python Developer
Primary FocusDeveloping both frontend and backend applications using PythonBuilding and maintaining server-side logic and databases with Python
Skills RequiredPython, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, frameworks like Django/Flask, frontend librariesPython, database management, API development, server-side frameworks
Work EnvironmentFull-stack projects, both client and server-side tasksBackend systems, APIs, database integration
Common UsageStartups, small teams, full product developmentLarge-scale backend systems, data processing

While both roles involve Python, a Full Stack Python Developer handles both frontend and backend development, whereas a Backend Python Developer focuses solely on server-side logic and database management. The choice depends on whether you want a comprehensive development role or specialize in backend systems.

Key responsibilities

  • Design and prototype application screens, wireframes, and interaction flows in Figma.

  • Translate Figma designs into pixel-perfect, responsive React and Next.js components.

  • Build and maintain RESTful APIs using Python or Node.js, and set up CI/CD pipelines for deployment.

Job description

Role Overview:
We are looking for a technically strong Senior Full Stack Developer with 6+ years of hands-on experience building scalable, production-grade web applications. The ideal candidate is equally comfortable designing UI mockups in Figma, building responsive React/Next.js frontends, architecting RESTful APIs in Python or Node.js, and owning the CI/CD pipelines that ship it all. You will work across the full delivery lifecycle - from blank canvas to production.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Design and prototype application screens, wireframes, and interaction flows in Figma.
  • Translate Figma designs into pixel-perfect, responsive React and Next.js components.
  • Implement robust state management using Redux, Zustand, React Query, or Context API.
  • Consume and integrate REST APIs, handling loading, error, and edge-case states in the UI.
  • Ensure cross-browser compatibility, accessibility (WCAG), and mobile responsiveness.
  • Maintain component libraries and enforce design-system consistency across products.
  • Design and build RESTful APIs using Python (FastAPI / Flask / Django) and Node.js (Express / NestJS).
  • Model and manage relational and non-relational databases; write optimised queries and migrations.
  • Implement authentication, authorisation, and security best practices (OAuth 2.0, JWT, RBAC).
  • Build reusable services, middleware, and shared libraries consumed across applications.
  • Perform code reviews and enforce backend coding standards, error handling, and logging.
  • Bootstrap new projects from scratch: repository structure, tooling, linting, testing scaffolds.
  • Define and document architecture decisions (ADRs) for new applications.
  • Evaluate and select appropriate frameworks, libraries, and cloud services for each use case.
  • Set up and maintain CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, Jenkins, or equivalent).
  • Containerise applications with Docker; manage multi-service environments with Docker Compose.
  • Deploy and configure cloud infrastructure on AWS, Azure, or GCP (compute, storage, networking).
  • Automate UI and API deployment workflows including build, test, lint, security scan, and release gates.
  • Monitor application health, set up alerting, and respond to production incidents.

Required Skills:
  • React.js (Hooks, functional components, performance patterns)
  • Next.js (SSR, SSG, ISR, App Router, API routes)
  • State management - Redux / Redux Toolkit, Zustand, or React Query
  • TypeScript - strong typing across components, hooks, and API contracts
  • HTML5, CSS3, Tailwind CSS or CSS Modules; responsive and accessible design
  • Figma - design, prototyping, component library creation, and design handoff
  • Python - FastAPI, Flask, or Django REST Framework; async patterns
  • Node.js - Express or NestJS; REST API design and middleware patterns
  • RESTful API design principles; OpenAPI / Swagger documentation
  • SQL (PostgreSQL / MySQL) and NoSQL (MongoDB / Redis)
  • Authentication & authorisation: OAuth 2.0, JWT, session management
  • Git (branching strategies: GitFlow, trunk-based); PR workflows and code review
  • Docker and Docker Compose; basic Kubernetes familiarity is a plus
  • CI/CD tooling: GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, Jenkins, or CircleCI
  • Cloud platforms: AWS (EC2, S3, Lambda, RDS) or Azure or GCP
  • Testing: Jest, Vitest, React Testing Library (frontend); Pytest, Supertest (backend)
  • Package management via JFrog Artifactory (organisation standard - npm and PyPI are not permitted)

Qualifications:
  • 6+ years of professional full stack development experience
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
  • Demonstrable portfolio or codebase showing end-to-end ownership (design ? deploy)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to work across cross-functional teams

Preferred Skills:
  • Experience with GraphQL or gRPC alongside REST APIs
  • Familiarity with micro-frontend or monorepo architectures (Nx, Turborepo)
  • Infrastructure-as-code experience (Terraform, Pulumi, or AWS CDK)
  • Exposure to observability tooling (Datadog, Grafana, OpenTelemetry)
  • Contributions to open-source projects or published npm / PyPI packages
