What is a full stack frontend developer?

A Full Stack Frontend Developer is a software professional who specializes in building both the user-facing (frontend) and server-side (backend) components of web applications, with a primary focus on frontend technologies. They are proficient in languages and frameworks like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React, or Angular for the frontend, while also understanding backend languages such as Node.js, Python, or PHP. This dual expertise allows them to work across the entire development stack, making them valuable in projects that require seamless integration between the user interface and server logic.

How does a full stack frontend developer typically collaborate with backend developers and designers on projects?

As a Full Stack Frontend Developer, you’ll regularly work alongside backend developers to ensure seamless integration between the user interface and server-side logic. Collaboration often involves reviewing API documentation, participating in sprint planning, and troubleshooting issues that arise at the intersection of frontend and backend systems. You’ll also work with designers to translate UI/UX mockups into functional, responsive components, providing technical feedback to optimize user experiences. Effective communication and teamwork are essential for delivering cohesive, high-quality applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full stack frontend developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack Frontend Developer, you should have a solid grasp of JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and at least one backend language or framework, often supported by a relevant degree or prior experience. Familiarity with tools like React, Node.js, version control systems (like Git), and deployment platforms is typically expected. Standout soft skills include problem-solving, adaptability, and strong communication for effective collaboration across teams. These skills are crucial for building responsive, scalable web applications and ensuring smooth integration between frontend and backend systems.

Job description

For more than 70 years, the Motion Picture Industry Pension & Health Plans (MPI) has proudly served the entertainment community by supporting the financial and healthcare well-being of the people who bring stories to life-from set crews to post-production pros.
We're a team of builders, problem-solvers, and collaborators committed to accuracy, accountability, and care. Our teams are guided by a simple mission: to improve the lives of those who work in the entertainment industry.
MPI is recognized as a five-time certified Great Place to Work® employer and recipient of the World at Work Seal of Distinction because we believe people do their best work when they're respected, supported, and inspired.
Role Overview
The Senior Full Stack Developer plays a key role in shaping MPI's next-generation digital experiences. You will design, build, and support modern applications that drive participants and business impact across multiple platforms.
This is a hands-on engineering role for someone who enjoys full ownership of what they build-from architecture and implementation to performance and quality. You will work closely with product, UX, QA, security, and operations partners to deliver solutions that are user-focused, stable, secure-by-design, and scalable.
You'll also contribute to new digital initiatives using Next.js, .NET Core microservices, cloud technologies, modern container orchestration technologies, and headless CMS platforms. Exposure to AI-enabled capabilities to improve development speed and enhance user experience is highly valuable.
Local candidates only; no relocation or visa sponsorship is available. This is a hybrid position requiring regular and as-needed onsite work in Studio City, CA.
MPI requires employees to be vaccinated against Covid-19 with exceptions as required by law.
Qualified candidates should submit a resume, cover letter, and compensation requirements. Only those most closely aligned with the role will be contacted.
MPI offers a comprehensive benefits package, including free medical, dental, behavioral health, and vision coverage, generous paid time off, retirement benefits including pension and 401k, supplemental benefits including discounted pet insurance, and professional development opportunities.
What You Will Need:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
  • 10+ years of full-stack development experience
  • Experience in regulated industries such as insurance, healthcare, or financial services is preferred
  • Experience designing, developing, and maintaining full-stack web applications using modern frameworks
  • Strong front-end development skills with Next.js / React.js
  • Hands-on experience building backend services using .NET Core microservices and RESTful APIs
  • Experience deploying and debugging applications in a Kubernetes environment
  • Ability to work with SQL databases, including data modeling and integration with application services
  • Experience contributing to new digital initiatives with a focus on reliability, long-term maintainability, and the thoughtful application of emerging tools and technologies
  • Ability to translate business and UX requirements into thoughtful technical solutions
  • Commitment to building performant, secure, accessible, and high-quality applications with consistent accountability for deadlines and deliverables
  • Experience supporting production deployments, operational troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis
  • Experience with CI/CD practices, automated testing, and version control
  • Exposure to working with headless CMS tools like Contentful
  • Exposure to building Power BI dashboards and reports using Microsoft Fabric data sources
  • Intermediate level of proficiency in Microsoft Office products required.
  • Ability to take ownership of assigned work; identify risks or improvement opportunities and drive solutions independently
  • Excellent, proactive communication skills (verbal and written) with the ability to work well with technical and non-technical partners at all levels of the organization
  • Excellent attendance and reliability, with the ability to work extended hours as required

What You'll Do:
  • Build modern applications using Next.js, leveraging server-side rendering or static site generation
  • Develop .NET Core backend services and microservice-based architectures
  • Design and optimize SQL database structures and queries
  • Work collaboratively within Agile/Scrum teams, actively participating in ceremonies and contributing to iterative delivery of incremental value
  • Implement and improve CI/CD pipelines and automated testing strategies, applying DevSecOps principles including secure coding practices, monitoring, observability, and support for enterprise-grade production environments
  • Work with cloud (Azure) and on-premises infrastructure, leveraging microservices, Docker-based containerization, and Kubernetes
  • Design and maintain content models, workflows, and integrations with Contentful or similar CMS platforms
  • Integrate AI/ML capabilities such as recommendation engines, automation, and LLM-driven enhancements to improve development efficiency, personalization, and user experience
  • Build rapid prototypes and proof-of-concepts to assess feasibility, performance, and user experience before production delivery
  • Contribute to engineering standards, documentation, and code quality, while ensuring applications meet accessibility (WCAG) and performance best practices
  • Build and maintain Power BI website analytics dashboards using Microsoft Fabric components
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Compensation:
The anticipated base salary for this position is $125,000 - $145,000 annually. The actual base salary offered will depend on a variety of factors, including without limitation, the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held.
