What is a full stack frontend developer?

A Full Stack Frontend Developer is a software professional who specializes in building both the user-facing (frontend) and server-side (backend) components of web applications, with a primary focus on frontend technologies. They are proficient in languages and frameworks like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React, or Angular for the frontend, while also understanding backend languages such as Node.js, Python, or PHP. This dual expertise allows them to work across the entire development stack, making them valuable in projects that require seamless integration between the user interface and server logic.

How does a full stack frontend developer typically collaborate with backend developers and designers on projects?

As a Full Stack Frontend Developer, you’ll regularly work alongside backend developers to ensure seamless integration between the user interface and server-side logic. Collaboration often involves reviewing API documentation, participating in sprint planning, and troubleshooting issues that arise at the intersection of frontend and backend systems. You’ll also work with designers to translate UI/UX mockups into functional, responsive components, providing technical feedback to optimize user experiences. Effective communication and teamwork are essential for delivering cohesive, high-quality applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full stack frontend developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack Frontend Developer, you should have a solid grasp of JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and at least one backend language or framework, often supported by a relevant degree or prior experience. Familiarity with tools like React, Node.js, version control systems (like Git), and deployment platforms is typically expected. Standout soft skills include problem-solving, adaptability, and strong communication for effective collaboration across teams. These skills are crucial for building responsive, scalable web applications and ensuring smooth integration between frontend and backend systems.

Job description

About the Role

Join an early-stage, Y Combinator-backed AI marketing automation startup as a Founding Engineer (Full-Stack). You'll be one of the first engineers on the team, taking full ownership of features from concept through deployment — working directly with founders and customers to shape the product and infrastructure from the ground up.

What You'll Do
  • Own end-to-end feature development across the full stack: frontend (Vue.js/Nuxt), backend (Node.js/TypeScript), and AI agent integrations (LangGraph)

  • Architect and maintain robust PostgreSQL database schemas using Supabase, ensuring data integrity and performance

  • Manage deployments, background jobs, and infrastructure using Render and Inngest; maintain dedicated deployments on Microsoft Azure

  • Apply user-centric design thinking across the full product lifecycle

  • Collaborate closely with the operations team and customers (via Slack and Notion) to align technical solutions with real user needs

  • Contribute to tooling and internal workflows using Linear, GitHub, Slack, and Notion

What We're Looking For

Required:

  • 2+ years of professional software engineering experience delivering full-stack web applications

  • Hands-on experience with TypeScript and Node.js backend development

  • Strong proficiency with PostgreSQL and relational database design

  • Frontend experience with Vue.js + Nuxt, or React/Next.js

  • Experience owning features end-to-end — from concept through deployment to maintenance

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience

  • Willing and able to relocate to San Francisco and work on-site

Nice to Have:

  • Experience deploying and managing applications with Render and Inngest; familiarity with Microsoft Azure

  • Background or exposure to marketing technology or AdTech

  • Experience integrating with LLM APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, etc.) or building AI/ML-powered features

  • Familiarity with serverless workflows or event-driven architecture

Compensation & Benefits
  • Salary: $175,000 – $200,000 USD annually

  • Equity as a founding team member

  • Visa sponsorship available

Location

This role is on-site in San Francisco, CA. Candidates must be willing and able to work from the San Francisco office full-time. Relocation support is available.
