What is a full stack engineer?

A Full Stack Engineer is a software developer who is skilled in both front-end and back-end development. They are capable of designing, building, and maintaining the entire technology stack of a web application, including user interfaces, servers, databases, and APIs. Full Stack Engineers often work with multiple programming languages and frameworks, allowing them to handle a wide variety of technical tasks. Their versatility makes them valuable team members in many tech projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full stack engineer?

To thrive as a Full Stack Engineer, you need proficiency in both front-end and back-end programming languages (such as JavaScript, HTML/CSS, Python, or Java), along with a solid understanding of web application architecture and databases. Familiarity with frameworks like React, Angular, Node.js, and tools such as Git, Docker, and CI/CD systems, as well as relevant certifications, are often required. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and adaptability help you collaborate across teams and manage complex projects. These skills are crucial for building, deploying, and maintaining robust, scalable applications that meet business needs.

How do full stack engineers typically collaborate with UX/UI designers and backend specialists on a project?

Full Stack Engineers frequently act as a bridge between UX/UI designers and backend specialists, ensuring seamless integration of front-end interfaces with server-side logic. They participate in cross-functional meetings, translate design requirements into functional features, and address technical feasibility from both ends. This collaboration often involves code reviews, regular communication to clarify requirements, and agile workflows to ensure that user experience and system performance are both prioritized throughout the development process.

What is the difference between Full Stack Engineer vs Front End Developer?

AspectFull Stack EngineerFront End Developer
Required SkillsProficiency in both front-end and back-end technologies, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, server-side languages, and databases.Specializes in client-side technologies like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and frameworks such as React or Angular.
Work EnvironmentWorks on both server and client-side development, often handling entire project stacks.Focuses primarily on creating and optimizing user interfaces and user experience.
Common UsageUsed in full project development, especially in startups and small teams requiring versatile developers.Primarily employed in UI/UX design, front-end frameworks, and client-side optimization.

While both roles require strong web development skills, a Full Stack Engineer handles both front-end and back-end tasks, providing a comprehensive approach to web development. A Front End Developer specializes in creating engaging and responsive user interfaces, focusing on the client side of applications.

Can I learn a full stack engineer in 3 months?

Becoming a full stack engineer in three months is challenging but possible with intensive study, focusing on core skills like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and backend frameworks. Success depends on prior experience, learning pace, and dedication, often requiring full-time commitment and practical projects to build proficiency.

Job description

Overview We're looking for a Full Stack Tech Lead with deep expertise across the frontend (React, TypeScript, CSS, HTML) and backend (C# / .NET, Entity Framework (or Java Spring Boot) , relational databases) stack to lead our logistics app team. Beyond hands-on coding, you'll own the systems architecture for a scalable data ingest pipeline spanning edge and cloud environments. You'll set technical direction, mentor frontend and backend engineers, and drive systems design decisions across the platform. Working closely with product owners, designers, and fellow engineers, you'll iterate quickly on features, improve performance, and build out a secure, scalable platform for real-world military and government users. This role blends technical leadership, architectural ownership, and hands-on coding, spanning everything from UI workflows to distributed backend services to deployment automation. Who We Are
We're not here to maintain the status quo, we're here to rewrite it and innovate at the pace of need. Our team is laser-focused on creating cutting-edge RFID solutions for the DoD that bring passive and active RFID tech to life, solving tough integration challenges across global sites. We're a no-bench, get-after-it kind of company where initiative is rewarded, and innovation is our default setting. If you're ready to dive in, take ownership, and ship real value, keep reading. With a focus on agility and collaboration, LMI serves the defense, space, healthcare, and energy sectors-helping agencies navigate complexity and outpace change. Headquartered in Tysons, Virginia, LMI is committed to delivering impactful results that strengthen missions and drive lasting value. Responsibilities What You'll Do * Own the end-to-end systems architecture for a scalable, resilient data ingest pipeline spanning edge and cloud, built on Redis, RabbitMQ, and custom services. * Lead and mentor a team of frontend and backend engineers, guiding technical decisions, conducting code reviews, and establishing best practices and documentation. * Drive full-stack systems design decisions, from distributed data flows and message queuing to API architecture, data models, and UI component structure. * Lead an AI-enabled development team, owning the guardrails, validation layers, end-to-end tests, and supporting systems that keep AI-assisted output safe, reliable, and production-grade. * Break down product and design requirements into clear, workable, well-scoped engineering tasks and distribute them effectively across the team. * Build intuitive, responsive front-end experiences using React and modern component libraries, translating requirements into clean, reusable UI components. * Write clean, secure back-end services using C# / .NET, with a focus on REST APIs, modular design, and optimized data access layers using Entity Framework. * Collaborate across design, product, DevSecOps , and field teams to launch features quickly and securely. * Drive rapid prototyping cycles while enforcing production-grade coding standards across the team. * Champion automated testing and code quality gates by writing and reviewing unit, integration, and end-to-end tests. * Troubleshoot bugs, squash performance bottlenecks, and help build toward FedRAMP and IL5 deployment requirements. Qualifications What We're Looking For * 6+ years of relevant software engineering experience, including prior experience leading or mentoring engineers. * Demonstrated ownership of systems architecture and design for distributed, scalable systems-ideally data ingest or streaming pipelines spanning edge and cloud environments. * Hands-on experience with distributed systems components such as Redis, RabbitMQ (or comparable message brokers), and custom service development. * Experience leading an AI-enabled development team, including owning the guardrails, validation, end-to-end testing, and support systems needed to safely and reliably ship AI-assisted work. * Full stack proficiency across frontend and backend, with demonstrated ability to make architectural decisions spanning both. * Strong frontend skills: React (component design, hooks, modern front-end patterns), JavaScript/TypeScript, and a solid grasp of HTML, CSS, and responsive design principles. * Strong backend skills: C# and modern .NET, with hands-on experience in Entity Framework and relational databases, plus a solid understanding of SQL, indexing, and query optimization. * Familiarity with dependency injection, async/await, and LINQ. * Deep understanding of systems design and the relationship between frontend and backend systems, including state management, REST APIs, async data fetching, and event-driven/asynchronous messaging patterns. * Experience with testing tools across the stack (e.g., Jest, Vitest , React Testing Library) and a track record of building automated validation and end-to-end testing into delivery. * Proven ability to turn product and design requirements into workable, well-scoped engineering tasks. * Familiarity with secure software development practices and CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, GitLab, etc ). * Comfortable leading in Agile or Lean environments, with rapid delivery cycles and direct user feedback loops. * US Citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain a government security clearance.
