A Full Stack Developer Intern is a trainee who assists in building both the front-end (user interface) and back-end (server, database) components of web applications. Interns in this role work under the guidance of experienced developers to learn and contribute to the entire software development process. They often use programming languages like JavaScript, Python, or Java, and frameworks such as React, Node.js, or Django. The internship provides practical experience in coding, debugging, and deploying web applications, preparing interns for a full-time developer position.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full stack developer intern?

To thrive as a Full Stack Developer Intern, you need a strong grasp of front-end and back-end programming languages, such as JavaScript, HTML/CSS, and either Node.js, Python, or Java, along with a relevant academic background in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, web frameworks (e.g., React, Express), and databases (SQL/NoSQL) is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, eagerness to learn, and effective communication skills help interns collaborate with teams and adapt to new technologies. These competencies are crucial for contributing to real-world projects, quickly adapting to workplace demands, and laying the foundation for a successful development career.

What types of projects and technologies can a full stack developer intern expect to work on during their internship?

You may work with technologies like JavaScript frameworks (e.g., React or Angular) for the front end, and languages such as Python, Java, or Node.js for the back end. It's common to collaborate closely with other developers, designers, and sometimes product managers, gaining exposure to the full software development lifecycle. Interns often participate in code reviews, agile sprints, and team meetings, providing valuable hands-on experience and learning opportunities.

How to get an internship for a full stack developer?

To secure a full stack developer internship, candidates should build a strong portfolio demonstrating skills in front-end and back-end technologies, such as JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and frameworks like React or Node.js. Gaining experience through personal projects, contributing to open-source, and obtaining relevant certifications can improve chances, along with applying through company career portals or internship programs and preparing for technical interviews. Having a solid understanding of version control systems like Git and good problem-solving skills are also beneficial.

Is a full stack developer intern still in demand?

Full stack developer internships remain in demand as companies seek candidates with skills in front-end and back-end technologies, including JavaScript, Python, and frameworks like React or Node.js. CareersFull Stack Developer

September 1, 2026

Location: Chicago, IL area — Hybrid / regular in-person collaboration preferred

Company Overview

OpenBrand is building the technology and data foundation that helps brands understand, measure, and act on competitive intelligence. As we expand our engineering organization, we are accelerating the integration of Comperemedia and delivering a broader modernization of our platform and cloud infrastructure.

We are looking for two high-ownership Full Stack Developers to join this delivery-focused effort. These roles will work directly on business-critical integration surfaces, modern application experiences, cloud ingestion pipelines, and AWS migration initiatives.

Role Overview

As a Full Stack Developer, you will own end-to-end delivery across key elements of the Comperemedia integration and platform buildout, including Portal/Auth/AppShell, Survey Manager 2.0, and MDP/Everest cloud-ingestion pipelines.

This is a hands-on, execution-oriented role for engineers who use agentic coding tools as a core part of their development workflow—not simply as an occasional assistant. You will use AI-enabled development tools to plan, scaffold, test, migrate, review, and ship software, while retaining full accountability for architecture, security, reliability, and production-quality outcomes.

You will work against a real, time-bound delivery plan, including an October vendor go-live. This is not exploratory R&D: it is an opportunity to contribute directly to a high-priority integration and modernization program.

Key ResponsibilitiesFull stack product delivery
  • Own full stack delivery across Comperemedia integration surfaces, including Portal/Auth/AppShell, the Survey Manager 2.0 rebuild, and MDP/Everest cloud-ingestion pipelines.
  • Build, test, and ship production software across frontend React/TypeScript applications and backend Node.js and Python services.
  • Take features from planning through deployment, including frontend experience, APIs, data-layer design, testing, observability, and release readiness.
  • Make sound technical and architectural decisions that balance speed, maintainability, security, and operational reliability.
AI-enabled engineering workflow
  • Use agentic coding tools as a first-class part of the engineering workflow, including planning, code scaffolding, test generation, migration scripting, documentation, and code review.
  • Operate multiple AI-agent sessions and use high-context, iterative workflows to accelerate delivery while maintaining engineering judgment and code quality.
  • Remain accountable for the correctness, security, architecture, and production readiness of all delivered work, regardless of how it is generated.
  • Report weekly on delivery progress and the relationship between AI-tool spend and delivered output, helping the team continuously tune its budget-to-throughput tradeoff.
Cloud modernization and integration
  • Support OpenBrand’s AWS platform migration, including efforts to retire an approximately 150-VM legacy footprint.
  • Help migrate Elasticsearch workloads to RDS and Redshift and convert Kinesis pipelines to MWAA-based orchestration.
  • Contribute to modernizing legacy services, data flows, and operational processes while minimizing risk to active product and customer workflows.
  • Partner closely with the DevOps/platform hire and existing COMET, CAT, and DIE teams to coordinate dependencies and delivery.
Collaboration and execution
  • Work directly with the CTO during the Comperemedia integration and ramp quickly onto the critical delivery path.
  • Clearly document ownership, dependencies, decisions, and delivery lanes across the workstream.
  • Collaborate regularly in person with teammates and stakeholders in the Chicago area.
  • Deliver consistently in a deadline-driven environment with clear business outcomes and integration milestones.
QualificationsEducation & Experience
  • 5+ years of full stack software engineering experience.
  • Demonstrated experience owning features end to end, from frontend and API development through data-layer implementation and deployment.
  • A strong track record delivering large-scale cloud integrations, supported by verifiable professional references.
  • Experience working on complex modernization, migration, or integration initiatives in production environments.
Technical Skills
  • Strong hands-on experience with React and TypeScript for frontend application development.
  • Strong backend development experience with Node.js and/or Python.
  • Deep working knowledge of AWS, including EC2, RDS, Redshift, Kinesis, MWAA, and IAM.
  • Experience designing, building, testing, and operating production APIs, services, data pipelines, and application infrastructure.
  • Daily, substantial experience using agentic or AI-assisted coding tools—such as Claude Code, Cursor, Devin, Windsurf, GitHub Copilot, Copilot Workspace, or similar—to deliver high-leverage engineering output.
  • Comfort using meaningful AI-tooling and compute capacity during active development sprints and explaining how that investment translates into delivery throughput.
Preferred Experience
  • Experience with legacy-system migration and modernization, including VM consolidation, Elasticsearch migrations, ETL modernization, or workflow-orchestration conversions.
  • Experience moving data workloads into RDS, Redshift, or comparable managed data platforms.
  • Familiarity with Model Context Protocol (MCP), custom AI-agent tools, or connectors.
  • Experience working with cross-functional engineering, platform, data, and product teams on time-sensitive delivery plans.
  • Chicago-area residency or the ability to participate regularly in in-person collaboration.
What Success Looks Like
  • You quickly become a reliable owner of a defined delivery lane within the Comperemedia integration.
  • You help deliver Portal/Auth/AppShell, Survey Manager 2.0, and cloud-ingestion capabilities on schedule and at production quality.
  • You use AI-enabled engineering workflows to increase throughput without compromising technical judgment, security, or reliability.
  • You contribute meaningfully to AWS modernization efforts and help reduce legacy-platform complexity.
  • You communicate progress, risks, ownership, and dependencies clearly and consistently.
Engagement Details
  • Immediate ramp onto the Comperemedia integration critical path.
  • Direct collaboration with OpenBrand’s CTO throughout the integration.
  • Delivery-paced work tied to high-priority platform and vendor-go-live milestones.
Compensation & Benefits

This full-time, exempt position has an anticipated annual base salary range of $140,000–$160,000 , depending on relevant experience, skills, qualifications, and location. The role is also eligible for a performance-based bonus.

  • Medical, dental, vision, and life insurance
  • Flexible Spending Account (FSA) and Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA)
  • 401(k) retirement plan with company matching
  • Flexible time off
  • Paid parental leave
