What is a full stack data engineer?

A Full Stack Data Engineer is a professional who designs, builds, and maintains the entire data pipeline, from data collection and storage to processing and visualization. They work with both the backend infrastructure (such as databases, data warehouses, and ETL processes) and frontend tools (like dashboards or reporting systems) to ensure data is accessible and usable for analytics. Full Stack Data Engineers possess skills in programming, database management, data modeling, cloud platforms, and often data visualization, allowing them to manage every stage of data flow within an organization.

How does a full stack data engineer typically balance responsibilities between backend data infrastructure and frontend data presentation tasks?

Full Stack Data Engineers are often required to split their time between developing robust backend data pipelines and creating user-facing tools or dashboards that visualize data insights. This dual responsibility means you'll need to prioritize tasks based on project needs, effectively collaborating with data scientists, analysts, and frontend developers. Communication is key, as you'll bridge gaps between technical teams and business stakeholders, ensuring data flows seamlessly from source systems to end users. Over time, many engineers find opportunities to specialize further or move into leadership roles overseeing data architecture and team strategy.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full stack data engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack Data Engineer, you need strong expertise in data modeling, ETL processes, and proficiency in both backend (e.g., Python, Java) and frontend (e.g., JavaScript, React) development, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure), big data tools (like Spark or Hadoop), and database systems (SQL and NoSQL) is typically required, and certifications in these technologies are advantageous. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills help you bridge gaps between data, development, and business teams. These skills ensure you can design, build, and maintain scalable data solutions that meet organizational needs efficiently.

What is the difference between Full Stack Data Engineer vs Data Scientist?

AspectFull Stack Data EngineerData Scientist

Work EnvironmentBuild data pipelines, manage databases, develop APIsAnalyze data, create models, generate insights
Industry UsageTech, finance, healthcare, where data infrastructure is keyResearch, analytics, product development teams

Full Stack Data Engineers focus on building and maintaining data infrastructure, integrating data from various sources, and ensuring data availability. Data Scientists analyze data, develop models, and generate insights. While both roles require strong technical skills, Full Stack Data Engineers are more involved in data pipeline development, whereas Data Scientists focus on data analysis and modeling.

Job description

We are seeking a Senior Full-Stack Software Engineer to join our high-performance engineering organization as a full-time, hands‑on individual contributor. In this role, you will be embedded within a cross‑functional team owning critical segments of our consumer ecosystem.

Our engineering organization is structured so that each domain team owns its vertical stack end‑to‑end—from backend microservices and APIs through frontend and DevOps. We are looking for an engineer with genuine depth across all layers of the stack who can move seamlessly between backend logic and rich frontend experiences, contributing independently within their first few weeks.

Beyond technical skills, we want someone who is innovative, proactive, and self‑driven—an engineer who actively seeks out better tools, raises quality standards, and delivers without waiting for direction. We place a premium on self‑learners who challenge the status quo, take genuine pride in the reliability of what they ship, and comfortably navigate ambiguity in a fast‑paced environment.

Potential Teams you will get to work on:
  1. New Constructions

The Focus: Powering the leading builder listing platform in the US, empowering a diverse range of consumers to discover and customise their dream homes.

What You’ll Work On: Building hyper‑customised web experiences for vibrant new communities, optimising high‑velocity frontends for substantial traffic and search engine optimisation (SEO), enhancing backend services, modernising infrastructure, expanding automated test suites, and engineering automated developer toolchains for instantaneous cloud service provisioning.

  2. Mortgage & Financial Services

The Focus: Building the digital future of home financing by creating seamless, secure, and transparent financial tools for buyers and lenders.

What You’ll Work On: High‑traffic loan origination flows, real‑time rate and affordability calculators, secure lead capture systems, compliance‑aware data architecture, and deep integrations with third‑party lender partner APIs.

  3. Rentals Post‑Lead & B2B Partnerships

The Focus: Powering what happens after the lead — building the products and backend services that turn renter interest into completed applications and drive rental revenue for property managers and independent landlords.

What You’ll Work On: Partner‑facing portals and promoted‑listing products, external partner integrations (application and listing providers), GraphQL services and backend infrastructure at scale, revenue‑diversification features, and the data pipelines behind partner performance and reporting.

What You’ll Do:
  • Product Delivery: Design, build, and maintain high‑traffic features and partner integrations across the full vertical stack (backend, APIs, frontend, infrastructure, databases).
  • Engineering Excellence: Write well‑tested, production‑ready code. Own and enforce test automation standards (unit, integration, E2E) in line with an engineering‑owned quality model.
  • Operational Ownership: Take full accountability for the operational quality, observability, and reliability of your services—including setting SLOs, monitoring, alerting, and incident response readiness.
  • Data & Security: Ensure data integrity, secure engineering practices, and compliance‑aware design when handling sensitive consumer, financial, and high‑volume marketplace data.
  • Modern Workflow Innovation: Leverage and champion the adoption of AI‑assisted development tools (e.g., Claude Code, Windsurf, Portkey, Gemini) to optimise development workflows.
  • Leadership & Collaboration: Drive project delivery with strong personal ownership—managing scope, timelines, and cross‑functional dependencies. Communicate technical concepts clearly to non‑technical stakeholders to build trust quickly.
What You'll Bring:
  • Experience: 5+ years of professional software engineering experience building and scaling distributed systems and high‑traffic, consumer‑facing products.
  • True Full‑Stack Capability: Proven depth across backend services, RESTful/GraphQL APIs, modern frontend frameworks (React or equivalent), and cloud/DevOps.
  • Backend Expertise: Strong experience with Node.js and microservice architectures.
  • Domain Background: Experience building search, marketplace, listing‑based, or financial services products (e.g., loan application flows, rate calculators, lender/partner API integrations).
  • Operational Rigor: Direct ownership of production infrastructure, including observability, SLOs, and incident management.
  • Execution: Strong project management skills to independently drive features from scoping through delivery in an agile, matrixed environment.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.
  • AI Tools: Hands‑on experience integrating AI‑assisted development tools into daily workflow.
  • Data Architecture: Familiarity with event‑driven architectures (e.g., Kafka, RabbitMQ, SQS/SNS) and data pipelines (e.g., Snowflake, S3, Aurora, reverse ETL).
  • Cloud & DevOps: Experience deploying and operating services on AWS using Kubernetes and containerization.
  • Advanced API Design: Familiarity with federated GraphQL architecture.
  • Compliance Awareness: Understanding of financial data sensitivity and compliance considerations relevant to consumer financial products (e.g., RESPA, TILA awareness).
  • Culture: Comfort working in a data‑ and metrics‑driven engineering culture aligned with performance KPIs.
How We Reward You:
  • Inclusive and competitive medical, Rx, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Family‑forming benefits.
  • 13 paid holidays.
  • Flexible time off.
  • 8 hours of paid volunteer time off.
  • Immediate eligibility into Company 401(k) plan with 3.5% company match.
  • Tuition reimbursement program for degree and non‑degree programs.
  • 1:1 personalized financial planning sessions.
  • Student debt retirement savings match programme.
  • Free snacks and refreshments in each office location.
