What is a full stack data engineer?

A Full Stack Data Engineer is a professional who designs, builds, and maintains the entire data pipeline, from data collection and storage to processing and visualization. They work with both the backend infrastructure (such as databases, data warehouses, and ETL processes) and frontend tools (like dashboards or reporting systems) to ensure data is accessible and usable for analytics. Full Stack Data Engineers possess skills in programming, database management, data modeling, cloud platforms, and often data visualization, allowing them to manage every stage of data flow within an organization.

How does a full stack data engineer typically balance responsibilities between backend data infrastructure and frontend data presentation tasks?

Full Stack Data Engineers are often required to split their time between developing robust backend data pipelines and creating user-facing tools or dashboards that visualize data insights. This dual responsibility means you'll need to prioritize tasks based on project needs, effectively collaborating with data scientists, analysts, and frontend developers. Communication is key, as you'll bridge gaps between technical teams and business stakeholders, ensuring data flows seamlessly from source systems to end users. Over time, many engineers find opportunities to specialize further or move into leadership roles overseeing data architecture and team strategy.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full stack data engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack Data Engineer, you need strong expertise in data modeling, ETL processes, and proficiency in both backend (e.g., Python, Java) and frontend (e.g., JavaScript, React) development, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure), big data tools (like Spark or Hadoop), and database systems (SQL and NoSQL) is typically required, and certifications in these technologies are advantageous. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills help you bridge gaps between data, development, and business teams. These skills ensure you can design, build, and maintain scalable data solutions that meet organizational needs efficiently.

What is the difference between Full Stack Data Engineer vs Data Scientist?

AspectFull Stack Data EngineerData Scientist
CredentialsBachelor's/Master's in CS, Data Engineering certificationsBachelor's/Master's in CS, Data Science or related fields
Work EnvironmentBuild data pipelines, manage databases, develop APIsAnalyze data, create models, generate insights
Industry UsageTech, finance, healthcare, where data infrastructure is keyResearch, analytics, product development teams

Full Stack Data Engineers focus on building and maintaining data infrastructure, integrating data from various sources, and ensuring data availability. Data Scientists analyze data, develop models, and generate insights. While both roles require strong technical skills, Full Stack Data Engineers are more involved in data pipeline development, whereas Data Scientists focus on data analysis and modeling.

Job description

About the Organization

Now is a great time to join Redhorse Corporation. We are a solution-driven company delivering data insights and technology solutions to customers with missions critical to U.S. national interests. We’re looking for thoughtful, skilled professionals who thrive as trusted partners building technology-agnostic solutions and want to apply their talents supporting customers with difficult and important mission sets.

Join the Team Building the Future of AI for National Security

Now is an exciting time to join Redhorse Corporation.

We are redefining how the U.S. Government transforms data into operational advantage through artificial intelligence, graph analytics, and mission-driven software engineering. Our teams work alongside the Department of Defense to build secure, scalable capabilities that enable analysts and decision-makers to move faster, reason better, and operate with greater confidence.

Our approach combines human-centered design, modern software engineering, graph technologies, artificial intelligence, and agile delivery to solve some of the nation’s most challenging problems.

About the Role

We’re looking for an exceptional Full Stack Developer to support one of the Department of Defense’s most innovative AI transformation efforts. Our team functions and collaborates across multiple workstreams including engineering, mission operations, and executive leadership, ensuring highly technical projects deliver measurable outcomes.

Working directly with other engineers, architects, data scientists, analysts, and mission users, the Full Stack Developer will deliver agentic AI and knowledge graph features culminating in an enterprise-level analytics platform.

Responsible for designing, developing, and deploying secure, scalable applications that integrate agentic artificial intelligence, large language models (LLMs), knowledge graphs, and traditional enterprise software within Department of Defense (DoD) environments. This role combines modern full stack software development with AI engineering to create intelligent decision-support systems capable of autonomous reasoning, information discovery, workflow automation, and mission planning.

This position is ideal for someone who thrives delivering mission-focused work into production, enjoys bringing structure to complexity, and understands that successful AI projects require disciplined execution as much as technical excellence.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and implement autonomous AI agents capable of planning, reasoning, and executing multi-step workflows.
  • Develop orchestration pipelines using modern agent frameworks.
  • Integrate Large Language Models (government-approved) into enterprise applications.
  • Develop architectures and/or ingestion pipelines that will use structured and unstructured data.
  • Optimize AI workflows for security, performance, explainability, and reliability.
  • Develop APIs supporting AI-enabled applications.
  • Support the integration of the knowledge graph database and enterprise analytics tools, AI reasoning chains, and mission data.
  • Develop scalable microservices and containerized applications.
  • Integrate entity resolution tooling into the platform.
  • Support the design, configuration, and maintenance of knowledge graphs representing mission data.
  • Develop semantic search and context-aware information retrieval solutions.
  • Participate in CI/CD pipeline development and automated testing.
  • Implement secure coding practices consistent with DoD cybersecurity requirements.
  • Perform vulnerability remediation and support Authority to Operate (ATO) activities.
Experience/Clearance
  • Active Top Secret clearance with SCI eligibility (TS/SCI required).
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, or related technical discipline.
  • 5+ experience as a full stack developer with upward trajectory. Experience supporting government or defense programs preferred.
  • Experience delivering enterprise software to government production environments, including hands on AI/ML initiatives, and complex systems integration efforts.
  • Experience on Agile, cross-functional engineering teams delivering modern cloud-based solutions.
  • Understanding of secure software development practices, RMF (Risk Management Framework,) relevant NIST publications.
  • Strong analytical, debugging, and systems thinking skills with the ability to communicate complex technical concepts to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience translating mission requirements into AI-enabled software solutions.
  • Passion for emerging AI technologies and continuous learning.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Commitment to delivering secure, reliable, and mission-focused software solutions.
