What is a full stack data engineer?

A Full Stack Data Engineer is a professional who designs, builds, and maintains the entire data pipeline, from data collection and storage to processing and visualization. They work with both the backend infrastructure (such as databases, data warehouses, and ETL processes) and frontend tools (like dashboards or reporting systems) to ensure data is accessible and usable for analytics. Full Stack Data Engineers possess skills in programming, database management, data modeling, cloud platforms, and often data visualization, allowing them to manage every stage of data flow within an organization.

How does a full stack data engineer typically balance responsibilities between backend data infrastructure and frontend data presentation tasks?

Full Stack Data Engineers are often required to split their time between developing robust backend data pipelines and creating user-facing tools or dashboards that visualize data insights. This dual responsibility means you'll need to prioritize tasks based on project needs, effectively collaborating with data scientists, analysts, and frontend developers. Communication is key, as you'll bridge gaps between technical teams and business stakeholders, ensuring data flows seamlessly from source systems to end users. Over time, many engineers find opportunities to specialize further or move into leadership roles overseeing data architecture and team strategy.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full stack data engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack Data Engineer, you need strong expertise in data modeling, ETL processes, and proficiency in both backend (e.g., Python, Java) and frontend (e.g., JavaScript, React) development, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure), big data tools (like Spark or Hadoop), and database systems (SQL and NoSQL) is typically required, and certifications in these technologies are advantageous. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills help you bridge gaps between data, development, and business teams. These skills ensure you can design, build, and maintain scalable data solutions that meet organizational needs efficiently.

What is the difference between Full Stack Data Engineer vs Data Scientist?

AspectFull Stack Data EngineerData Scientist

Full Stack Data Engineers focus on building and maintaining data infrastructure, integrating data from various sources, and ensuring data availability. Data Scientists analyze data, develop models, and generate insights. While both roles require strong technical skills, Full Stack Data Engineers are more involved in data pipeline development, whereas Data Scientists focus on data analysis and modeling.

Job description

Berlin Packaging is the premier supplier of rigid packaging. With over $3 billion in revenue, we have grown 5x faster than the overall packaging industry since 1898.
Chances are you enjoy products supplied by us every day! We serve virtually every end market: automotive, beverage, food, home care, industrial chemical, pet care and veterinary, personal health and beauty, wine and spirits, and cannabis.
Our engagement scores are 2x the national average, and every employee shares in Berlin's profitable growth. Combined with our "Anything is Possible" mindset and our winning culture, our 2,000+ employees agree, we love it here!
Berlin Packaging has been investing in technology across the enterprise, and our integration platform is at the heart of how our systems connect, communicate, and scale. As a Senior Azure .NET Full Stack Integration Developer, you will be a hands-on practitioner at the center of that effort - designing and building enterprise-grade APIs, microservices, and full stack applications using Azure .NET and Azure API Management (APIM), backed by strong DevOps practices and experience across data and data warehouse platforms.
You will collaboratively develop solutions alongside onshore and offshore developers, architects, and cross-functional technology teams, contributing your expertise, elevating the work around you, and owning your deliverables end-to-end. The expectation is that you bring deep, proven experience and can operate with a high degree of autonomy from day one.
What You'll Do:
API, Microservices & Backend Development
  • Develop scalable C#/.NET (ASP.NET Core) applications, REST APIs, and microservices using Azure cloud-native architecture and best practices.
  • Build, deploy, and manage applications on Azure App Services, Azure Function Apps, Azure Static Web Apps, and Azure Logic Apps, ensuring scalability, reliability, and performance.
  • Design, publish, secure, and manage APIs using Azure API Management (APIM), including authentication, policies, versioning, throttling, caching, monitoring, and API lifecycle management.
  • Integrate Azure services including Service Bus, Event Hubs, Key Vault, Storage Accounts, and Azure SQL, and implement CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps.
  • Leverage AI-assisted development tools - Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or similar - to accelerate development, improve code quality, automate testing, and enhance developer productivity.
Cloud, Data & Data Warehouse Integration
  • Develop data pipelines and integrations using Azure Data Factory, Databricks, Azure Functions, and Logic Apps.
  • Deliver integrations across enterprise platforms including ERP, CRM, eCommerce portals, PIM systems, and data warehouse/lakehouse environments.
  • Support consumption of APIs and data services by downstream reporting, analytics, and data warehouse platforms.
DevOps & Engineering Practices
  • Implement and maintain CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps, Terraform, and GitHub, promoting engineering best practices across the integration and API codebase.
  • Manage build, release, and environment configuration for .NET and APIM deployments.
  • Maintain observability through monitoring, logging, and alerting tooling across the integration platform.
Quality, Security & Collaboration
  • Implement API security standards including OAuth2 and JWT across .NET and APIM APIs.
  • Provide L2/L3 production support, triaging and resolving integration issues with urgency and thoroughness.
  • Collaborate effectively with onshore and offshore developers, sharing knowledge and contributing to a high standard of delivery across the team.
  • Leverage AI-assisted development tools to accelerate productivity and improve code quality.
What We're Looking For:
Required Qualifications
  • 8-10+ years of hands-on, full stack experience in enterprise API and integration development, with a track record of owning complex, mission-critical systems end-to-end.
  • Strong hands-on expertise building APIs, microservices, and full stack (frontend, middleware, and backend) applications with Azure .NET (C#, ASP.NET Core Web API, Blazor/Angular/React), including publishing and managing APIs through Azure API Management (APIM) - security policies, versioning, and payload/performance optimization.
  • Proven front-end development experience with modern frameworks (Angular, React, or Blazor), HTML5, CSS3, and TypeScript/JavaScript, with an eye for responsive, user-friendly UI/UX design.
  • Strong command of REST, SOAP, JSON, and XML integration patterns, along with API design, versioning, and lifecycle management best practices.
  • Solid DevOps experience: CI/CD pipeline design and implementation using Azure DevOps and GitHub, plus Infrastructure-as-Code using Terraform.
  • Hands-on experience with Azure data and integration services - APIM, Azure Data Factory, Databricks, Functions, Logic Apps, Service Bus, and Key Vault.
  • Strong SQL and relational database skills (Azure SQL/T-SQL), with familiarity in data warehouse or lakehouse architecture and data pipeline development.
  • Experience with messaging and event-driven platforms (Azure Service Bus, Event Hubs, or Kafka).
  • Experience with enterprise systems integration and implementation - including UI/UX considerations - across platforms such as MuleSoft, Oracle PeopleSoft, Salesforce, and data warehouse environments.
  • Solid understanding of application and API security standards including OAuth2, JWT, and secure coding practices.
  • Experience building or integrating AI/LLM-enabled APIs.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor junior/mid-level developers, lead architecture and design discussions, and drive the best engineering practices across the team.
  • Comfortable working in a collaborative, cross-functional team environment with onshore and offshore contributors, including providing technical leadership and guidance.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Developer Associate (or similar Azure certification).
  • Experience with Azure OpenAI or similar LLM platforms in an integration context.
  • Experience with event-driven architecture patterns at scale.
  • Exposure to API governance frameworks and reusable integration design.
  • Experience with Agile/Scrum delivery practices.
  • Background in manufacturing, distribution, supply chain, or packaging industries.
