What is a full stack AI engineer?

A Full Stack AI Engineer is a professional who develops and deploys artificial intelligence solutions across both the front-end and back-end of applications. They combine expertise in AI and machine learning with software engineering skills, allowing them to build, integrate, and maintain AI-powered features throughout the entire technology stack. Their responsibilities often include designing machine learning models, integrating them with APIs, and ensuring seamless user experiences on web or mobile platforms. Full Stack AI Engineers bridge the gap between data science and software development, enabling scalable and production-ready AI applications.

How do full stack AI engineers typically collaborate with data scientists and front-end developers on AI-driven projects?

Full Stack AI Engineers often serve as the bridge between data scientists, who develop machine learning models, and front-end developers, who build user interfaces. They work closely with data scientists to understand the model requirements and deployment needs, and with front-end teams to ensure seamless integration of AI functionalities into applications. This collaboration requires effective communication skills and a clear understanding of both the technical and user experience aspects. Regular meetings, code reviews, and shared documentation are common practices to facilitate smooth teamwork and successful project outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full stack AI engineer?

To thrive as a Full Stack AI Engineer, you need strong programming skills (such as Python, JavaScript), understanding of machine learning algorithms, and experience with both front-end and back-end development, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with frameworks like TensorFlow or PyTorch, cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), and containerization tools (Docker, Kubernetes) is typically required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and effective communication are standout soft skills in this role. These skills and qualifications enable the seamless integration of AI models into scalable applications, ensuring innovative and robust solutions.

Job description

Overview
Are you excited to build the next generation of AI-powered experiences for educators and learners, while also reinventing how those products are engineered? Do you enjoy turning ambiguous product opportunities into secure, reliable, and intuitive software that reaches users at Microsoft scale? Do you use AI agents today, have strong ideas about effective agentic development, or want to explore how agentic AI can accelerate discovery, implementation, evaluation, operations, and continuous improvement? If so, we would love to talk with you.
Our Education team builds applications, services, and platform capabilities that help educators, students, administrators, and institutions succeed across Microsoft 365, Windows, and the broader Microsoft ecosystem. We work across client, web, service, and AI layers to make teaching and learning more accessible, engaging, effective, and responsible.
We are looking for a Software Engineer II who is a modern AI engineer and solid product engineer. You will design and ship production-quality experiences that combine full-stack software engineering with practical AI capabilities, including large and small language models, multimodal models, retrieval-augmented generation, tool and function calling, agents, multi-agent orchestration, and grounded workflows. Depending on your background, you may also apply machine learning techniques to feature development, personalization, ranking, prediction, experimentation, or quality improvement.
This role is broader than building individual features. You will help the team evolve how we engineer products end to end by applying AI to requirements exploration, prototyping, coding, testing, evaluation, debugging, deployment, live-site operations, and engineering knowledge. You will dogfood emerging tools, safely experiment with new development patterns, measure their effectiveness, and turn promising ideas into repeatable practices that improve quality, velocity, and customer impact.
You will partner closely with Product Management, Design, Applied Science, Data Science, and engineering teams across Microsoft to translate customer needs and emerging AI capabilities into intuitive, accessible, secure, reliable, and responsible experiences across Windows, Microsoft 365 clients, web platforms, and cloud services.
Microsoft's mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. As employees we come together with a growth mindset, innovate to empower others, and collaborate to realize our shared goals. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond.
Responsibilities
  • Own and deliver complete product features across the engineering lifecycle, including requirements review, design, architecture, implementation, testability, debugging, deployment, monitoring, and servicing.
  • Build full-stack AI experiences using modern front-end technologies, service APIs, cloud services, telemetry, experimentation, and safe deployment practices.
  • Create reusable AI-powered platform components and workflows that can be adopted across education scenarios, Microsoft 365 experiences, and Windows-integrated experiences.
  • Apply practical AI techniques such as prompt engineering, grounding, retrieval-augmented generation, tool/function calling, model evaluation, multimodal workflows, and responsible use of LLMs and SLMs.
  • Where valuable, apply machine learning approaches to product features and platform capabilities, working with Applied Science and Data Science partners to move from experimentation to production.
  • Experiment and apply emerging AI engineering tools across planning, prototyping, coding, code review, testing, security analysis, evaluation, debugging, documentation, deployment, operations, and knowledge discovery and translate successful approaches into reusable components, guidance, automation, and team-wide practices.
  • Partner with product managers, designers, data scientists, applied AI researchers, and partner engineering teams to translate customer and business needs into intuitive, accessible, scalable, and maintainable solutions.
  • Design and implement test strategies, including unit, integration, end-to-end, accessibility, performance, security, and regression coverage; use automation and AI-assisted tooling where it improves quality.
  • Instrument features with logging, telemetry, success metrics, guardrail metrics, and dashboards; use data, feature flags, flighting, and experimentation to learn quickly and improve product outcomes.
  • Participating in live-site operations as needed, improve troubleshooting guides and observability, and help ensure services meet reliability, availability, security, privacy, and compliance expectations.
  • Contribute to an inclusive team culture where everyone can bring their full and authentic self, collaborate respectfully, learn continuously, and do their best work.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python.
    • OR equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 3+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, TypeScript, or Python.
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 2+ years of hands-on experience building production desktop/web applications or services, including modern front-end development, service/API integration, testing, debugging, deployment, and operational support.
  • Experience applying computer science fundamentals, system design, data structures, algorithms, testing, code review, and secure software engineering practices to production software.
  • Experience using AI-assisted development tools or building AI-powered workflows, prototypes, features, or internal engineering tools.
