What is a full stack AI engineer?

A Full Stack AI Engineer is a professional who develops and deploys artificial intelligence solutions across both the front-end and back-end of applications. They combine expertise in AI and machine learning with software engineering skills, allowing them to build, integrate, and maintain AI-powered features throughout the entire technology stack. Their responsibilities often include designing machine learning models, integrating them with APIs, and ensuring seamless user experiences on web or mobile platforms. Full Stack AI Engineers bridge the gap between data science and software development, enabling scalable and production-ready AI applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full stack AI engineer?

To thrive as a Full Stack AI Engineer, you need strong programming skills (such as Python, JavaScript), understanding of machine learning algorithms, and experience with both front-end and back-end development, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with frameworks like TensorFlow or PyTorch, cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), and containerization tools (Docker, Kubernetes) is typically required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and effective communication are standout soft skills in this role. These skills and qualifications enable the seamless integration of AI models into scalable applications, ensuring innovative and robust solutions.

How do full stack AI engineers typically collaborate with data scientists and front-end developers on AI-driven projects?

Full Stack AI Engineers often serve as the bridge between data scientists, who develop machine learning models, and front-end developers, who build user interfaces. They work closely with data scientists to understand the model requirements and deployment needs, and with front-end teams to ensure seamless integration of AI functionalities into applications. This collaboration requires effective communication skills and a clear understanding of both the technical and user experience aspects. Regular meetings, code reviews, and shared documentation are common practices to facilitate smooth teamwork and successful project outcomes.

Job description

McKesson is an impact-driven, Fortune 10 company that touches virtually every aspect of healthcare. We are known for delivering insights, products, and services that make quality care more accessible and affordable. Here, we focus on the health, happiness, and well-being of you and those we serve - we care. What you do at McKesson matters. We foster a culture where you can grow, make an impact, and are empowered to bring new ideas. Together, we thrive as we shape the future of health for patients, our communities, and our people. If you want to be part of tomorrow's health today, we want to hear from you.

About the Role

McKesson is seeking a Senior AI-First Full Stack Engineer to build the next generation of intelligent healthcare technology solutions supporting one of the nation's leading and fastest-growing specialty pharmacy organizations. This role combines strong full stack engineering with Generative AI innovation to deliver production-grade applications powered by modern web technologies, REST APIs, cloud-native platforms, enterprise data and integrations, Large Language Models (LLMs), and AI agents in a fast-paced healthcare environment where technology directly impacts patient, provider, and business outcomes. The engineer will work across the entire software lifecycle, from business discovery, system design, and full stack application development through testing, cloud deployment, production support, and measurable adoption. The role requires a hands-on builder with strong front-end, back-end, API, data, integration, and cloud engineering fundamentals who can apply AI as an additional capability and engineering accelerator. The engineer must translate ambiguous business problems into practical solutions, collaborate directly with stakeholders, and establish standards for secure, reliable, and scalable delivery across specialty pharmacy, patient engagement, provider solutions, and operational platforms. Our team supports fast-paced specialty pharmacy operations, patient engagement, provider services, and business-critical healthcare workflows where speed, reliability, scalability, and innovation directly contribute to patient outcomes and business growth. Success in this role comes from partnering closely with the business to rapidly validate solutions, transform prototypes into scalable production capabilities, and maintain accountability for adoption, reliability, and outcomes.

What You'll Do

Design, develop, and deploy AI-powered applications using Claude (Anthropic), Azure OpenAI, OpenAI, and Azure AI Services. Partner directly with business stakeholders to define problems, validate workflows, rapidly prototype solutions, and convert successful concepts into production capabilities. Build RAG solutions, prompt frameworks, AI workflows, and autonomous or agentic systems with human-in-the-loop controls. Develop full stack applications using React, TypeScript, Python, C#, Java, Node.js, and .NET. Design REST APIs, microservices, event-driven architectures, and enterprise integration patterns. Integrate AI capabilities with ServiceNow, Salesforce, Snowflake, Databricks, Power BI, and other enterprise platforms. Develop cloud-native solutions on Microsoft Azure using secure engineering and DevOps practices. Build CI/CD pipelines, Infrastructure as Code, containerized workloads, and Kubernetes deployments. Serve as technical owner for assigned applications or platforms, establishing architecture standards, engineering guardrails, SLOs, and production-readiness criteria. Lead modernization, technical debt reduction, resiliency improvements, design reviews, incident resolution, and root-cause prevention. Mentor engineers and influence architecture, security, data, product, and delivery decisions across teams.

Basic Requirements
  • 7+ years of professional software engineering experience developing enterprise-scale applications.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Hands-on experience building and deploying applications using Java, Node.js, C#, Python, or comparable backend technologies.
  • Experience developing modern front-end applications using React and TypeScript.
  • Experience designing and consuming REST APIs, microservices, and enterprise integrations.
  • Experience developing cloud-native applications on Microsoft Azure.
  • Experience with CI/CD, source control, automated testing, SDLC, and Agile practices.
  • Experience acting as a technical lead or primary owner for an enterprise application, service, or platform.
  • Experience designing scalable architectures, documenting trade-offs, and supporting production systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to turn ambiguous business needs into delivered technical solutions.
Preferred Skills / Experience
  • Experience with Azure AI Services, Azure OpenAI, Azure AI Foundry, Cognitive Services, and enterprise AI platforms.
  • Experience building Generative AI solutions using Azure OpenAI, OpenAI, Claude, or comparable LLM platforms.
  • Strong programming experience with Python, C#, TypeScript, JavaScript, Java, and .NET technologies.
  • Experience developing full stack applications using React, TypeScript, Node.js, Python, and C#/.NET.
  • Experience designing, developing, securing, and supporting REST APIs and enterprise integration services.
  • Experience with Databricks, Snowflake, and governed enterprise data and analytics platforms.
  • Experience with RAG, semantic search, vector databases, AI orchestration, agentic AI, guardrails, evaluation, and human-in-the-loop workflows.
  • Experience with Salesforce platform development, integrations, REST APIs, workflows, and data services.
  • Experience integrating with or supporting ServiceNow workflows, ITSM, CMDB, service catalog, and automation processes.
  • Experience developing data visualization, analytics, and operational reporting solutions using Power BI.
  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, Infrastructure as Code, Azure Monitor, Application Insights, or comparable platforms.
  • Knowledge of distributed systems, event-driven architecture, asynchronous processing, and resiliency patterns.
  • Experience leading application modernization, cloud transformation, or platform engineering initiatives.
  • Experience in healthcare, specialty pharmacy, regulated industries, or high-compliance environments.
