What is a Full Stack AI Engineer?

A Full Stack AI Engineer is a professional who develops and deploys artificial intelligence solutions across both the front-end and back-end of applications. They combine expertise in AI and machine learning with software engineering skills, allowing them to build, integrate, and maintain AI-powered features throughout the entire technology stack. Their responsibilities often include designing machine learning models, integrating them with APIs, and ensuring seamless user experiences on web or mobile platforms. Full Stack AI Engineers bridge the gap between data science and software development, enabling scalable and production-ready AI applications.

How do Full Stack AI Engineers typically collaborate with data scientists and front-end developers on AI-driven projects?

Full Stack AI Engineers often serve as the bridge between data scientists, who develop machine learning models, and front-end developers, who build user interfaces. They work closely with data scientists to understand the model requirements and deployment needs, and with front-end teams to ensure seamless integration of AI functionalities into applications. This collaboration requires effective communication skills and a clear understanding of both the technical and user experience aspects. Regular meetings, code reviews, and shared documentation are common practices to facilitate smooth teamwork and successful project outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Full Stack AI Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack AI Engineer, you need strong programming skills (such as Python, JavaScript), understanding of machine learning algorithms, and experience with both front-end and back-end development, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with frameworks like TensorFlow or PyTorch, cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), and containerization tools (Docker, Kubernetes) is typically required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and effective communication are standout soft skills in this role. These skills and qualifications enable the seamless integration of AI models into scalable applications, ensuring innovative and robust solutions.

Job description

Forward Deployed Full Stack Engineer Location: Hybrid ~3x/wk | Groton, CT or Suitland, MD
Clearance: Active U.S. Secret Clearance Required Employment Type: Full-time, salaried, with full benefits The Company & Mission: Join a mission-driven defense technology company at the forefront of maritime domain awareness and national security innovation. This team is building next-generation platforms that combine artificial intelligence, advanced sensor systems, and real-time data processing to support critical U.S. defense operations. The organization operates with a flat structure, empowering engineers to work directly with leadership and take full ownership of high-impact systems. Youโ€™ll collaborate across hardware, software, and mission teams to deliver solutions that are actively deployed in operational environments. This is an opportunity to work on real-world systems that directly impact warfighter capabilities โ€” including AI-powered platforms integrated with sonar data and edge-deployed sensor networks. What This Role is All About: As a Forward Deployed Full Stack Engineer, you will work directly with end users and mission stakeholders in operational environments. This is a highly hands-on role combining software engineering, system integration, and field problem-solving. You will own systems end-to-end and ensure they perform reliably in mission-critical conditions. You will build and deploy full-stack applications, integrate real-time and batch data pipelines, and deliver solutions that operate effectively in real-world environments. This is not a traditional software role โ€” you will be expected to operate close to the mission, solve real-world problems quickly, and take full ownership of outcomes. What Youโ€™ll Be Doing: โ€ข Build and maintain full-stack application components, including user-facing interfaces and backend services
โ€ข Develop responsive, high-performance UIs using modern frameworks (React, Next.js, TypeScript)
โ€ข Implement and integrate real-time data feeds using technologies such as WebGPU
โ€ข Design and optimize data models using PostgreSQL and Apache Iceberg
โ€ข Modify and maintain real-time data pipelines using MQTT and Redpanda
โ€ข Build and support batch/offline data pipelines using Dagster
โ€ข Integrate machine learning models and algorithms into production applications
โ€ข Collaborate directly with customers and mission stakeholders to solve real-world operational challenges
โ€ข Improve local development environments and CI/CD pipelines using modern tooling (e.g., GitHub Actions)
โ€ข Debug, troubleshoot, and resolve issues in live deployment environments What You Bring: โ€ข Strong full-stack engineering experience across frontend and backend systems
โ€ข Expertise in TypeScript and modern frontend development (React, Next.js)
โ€ข Experience building APIs using Node.js, GraphQL, and/or REST
โ€ข Proficiency with SQL and relational databases (PostgreSQL)
โ€ข Hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes)
โ€ข Working knowledge of Python
โ€ข Experience building and maintaining production-grade systems with a focus on performance and reliability
โ€ข Ability to operate in fast-paced, ambiguous environments with high ownership Bonus Points: โ€ข Experience working with IoT devices, sensors, or edge systems
โ€ข Background in digital signal processing (DSP)
โ€ข Experience with geospatial systems or GIS
โ€ข Familiarity working within monorepos
โ€ข Prior experience in defense, national security, or mission-critical environments Benefits: โ€ข Equity participation
โ€ข 401(k) retirement plan
โ€ข Unlimited paid time off (PTO)
โ€ข Paid parental leave
โ€ข Paid holidays
โ€ข Comprehensive medical, dental, vision, and life insurance
โ€ข Short- and long-term disability coverage
