What is Fulbright teaching?

Fulbright Teaching refers to opportunities provided by the Fulbright Program for educators to teach abroad. These positions are typically awarded to U.S. citizens who serve as English Teaching Assistants (ETAs) or lecturers in schools and universities overseas. The goal is to promote mutual understanding between the United States and other countries through educational exchange. Participants gain valuable cross-cultural experience, develop professional skills, and help foster international collaboration.

What are some common challenges Fulbright teachers face when adapting to a new educational system abroad?

Fulbright teachers often encounter challenges such as differences in classroom culture, teaching methodologies, and language barriers when adapting to a new educational system. Adjusting to varying expectations around student participation, grading, and curriculum standards can require flexibility and open-mindedness. Building rapport with students and colleagues from diverse backgrounds is essential, and successful teachers proactively seek support from local staff and other Fulbright participants to navigate these transitions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Fulbright teaching assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Fulbright Teaching Assistant, you typically need a bachelor's degree, strong subject knowledge, and prior teaching or tutoring experience. Familiarity with classroom technology, curriculum design, and language teaching tools like TESOL or TEFL certifications can be highly beneficial. Cross-cultural communication, adaptability, and initiative are essential soft skills for engaging diverse student groups and navigating new environments. These competencies ensure effective teaching, foster mutual understanding, and contribute to the program's goal of cultural exchange.

Fellowship Title
Fulbright U.S. Student Program - Campus Deadline
Fellowship Description
The Fulbright U.S. Student Program expands perspectives through academic and professional advancement and cross-cultural dialogue. Fulbright creates connections in a complex and changing world. In partnership with more than 140 countries worldwide, the Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers unparalleled opportunities in all academic disciplines to passionate and accomplished graduating college seniors, graduate students, and young professionals from all backgrounds. Program participants pursue graduate study, conduct research, or teach English abroad.
Eligibleare U.S. citizens who are graduating seniors or graduates in any field.
*Any eligible candidate who wants to apply for the Fulbright can (Wellesley does not nominate/not nominate for Fulbright). The campus application process is simply to provide feedback and advice-plus an additional letter of reference in support of your application-to help you put forward the strongest application you can by the national deadline in early October!
Interviews: the Wellesley committee conducts informal interviews during the month of September, ahead of the national deadline in early October.
To apply for Fulbright with the support of the Wellesley committee, by the campus deadline on August 19, 2026, please:
  • Submit a pdf copy of your official Fulbright applicationvia this system (but do NOT hit the submit button in the official Fulbright online application system: instead, please "lock" it for campus review by the campus deadline, as well as providing a copy here; we will return editing access to you after your campus interview). See the Wellesley Fulbright page for detailed application information and lots of tips and advice.
  • Transcripts: upload any applicable transcripts (including Wellesley, transfer or study abroad institutions) to your official online application and include them here. **Please note that while the Wellesley committee is happy to look at an unofficial transcript, an unofficial Wellesley transcript does NOT meet Fulbright's requirements, so you must upload an official Wellesley transcript to the Fulbright application system before the national deadline in early October. (Should this be a financial difficulty for you, email fellowships@wellesley.edu and we'll order and pay for an official Wellesley transcript for you for Fulbright, no questions asked.)
  • References: please request 3 references via the official Fulbright application system (not this Wellesley system), noting that for English Teaching Assistantship applications references must submit a form and for Study/Research grants references must submit letters. These should be submitted via the official online Fulbright application system and may come in after you "lock" your official application for committee review, and even after the campus deadline.
  • Language evaluations: even if a foreign language evaluation is not required for the grant for which you are applying, if you have any proficiency at all in one or more languages of your host country, submit a language evaluation and strengthen your application! These should be submitted via the official online Fulbright application (and not this Wellesley system). Language evaluations may be submitted after you "lock" your official application for committee review, and after the campus deadline.
  • Letters of affiliation, if applicable: upload them to your official Fulbright application; you may submit an application for the Wellesley committee to review even if you don't yet have a required letter of affiliation, just keep working on it so you'll have it by the end of September at the very latest.
  • Portfolio: only for arts grants or in support of study/research grants for arts degree programs for which portfolios are required. Please submit this via the official Fulbright application system as required.
