Description
Perform professional-level maintenance, diagnostic, and repair work to a variety of systems including gasoline and diesel powered engines, (manual, automatic, and hydrostatic drive trains), as well as electrical, hydraulic, suspension, steering, fuel, emission, and computer systems. Perform preventative maintenance work to a wide-range of vehicles and equipment, such as automobiles, vans, and trucks (light, medium, and commercial regulated vehicles), and light to medium construction and agricultural equipment. Cut, solder, braze, and weld various metal materials. Perform maintenance and repair to heating and air-conditioning systems. Occasionally performing vehicle wash activities that include vacuuming interiors, scrubbing and washing exteriors, and/or steam cleaning engines, mechanical components, etc. Assist with machinist activities to fabricate parts for equipment such as bushings, sleeves, and assist with refurbishing or constructing specialized vehicles and equipment by performing the following duties:
What You'll Be Doing:

• Confer with customer to obtain a description of the vehicle problem.
• Analyze simple work orders, diagrams, specifications, oral instructions, and general requirements to
  estimate material needs, acquire resources, allocate tasks, and define project parameters.
• Use appropriate protective materials over seats, carpets, fenders, hoods, etc. to protect the interior and
  exterior surfaces while performing work.
• Use manufacturer specifications, blueprints, charts, reports, and related digital service manuals to
  diagnose systems and components.
• Perform routine safety inspections on new vehicles and equipment.
• Perform standard quarterly and annual preventative maintenance by following the vehicle inspection
  checklist to ensure all critical components are examined, including belts, hoses, steering rods, spark plugs,
  brake pads, fuel filters, wheels, tires, and other potentially problematic areas.
• Change a variety of filters including cabin, air, oil, fuel, hydraulic, and coolant.
• Install, repair, and maintain accessories and equipment including light bars, safety screens, windshields,
  cargo racks, and other equipment.
• Diagnose and repair steering axles, including wheel bearings, tie-rods, springs, hangars, oil seals, shock
  absorbers, and related parts and equipment.
• Diagnose, maintain, repair, replace, and/or adjust brake systems including wheel cylinders, brake calipers,
  master cylinders, disc pads, brake shoes, and machine (turn) drums and rotors for hydraulic and/or air
  brake systems.
• Diagnose, maintain, and repair irregularities with tires, wheels, and/or tubes.
• Diagnose and repair drive axles, drive train components (transmissions), belts, gears, chain drives,
  clutches, and propeller shafts.
• Cut a variety of metal materials using a chop saw, band saw, and/or plasma cutter.
• Braze, solder, or weld a variety of metal materials using an oxygen-acetylene torch, electric arc, and/or a
  metal-inert gas, tungsten-inert gas welder.
• Cut, weld, fabricate, and assemble parts for automotive and custom equipment; fabricate, modify and
  repair body and chassis parts as needed.
• Diagnose, maintain, and repair the primary electrical system components such as ignition systems,
  computers, alternators, starters, and batteries.
• Diagnose, maintain, and repair secondary electrical system components, including gauges, sending units,
  relays, switches, light bulbs, and high voltage light systems.
• Diagnose, maintain and repair air conditioning, heating, and ventilation systems, and replace components
  such as belts, refrigerant compressors, air-driers, pressure switches, electric fans, and ensure the system
  has sufficient refrigerant.
• Diagnose, maintain and repair cooling systems, and replace components such as the radiator, thermostat,
  and temperature switches, and ensure the systems has sufficient antifreeze.
• Perform inspections, test-drives, diagnostics, and evaluations (using diagnostic equipment such as an
  engine analyzer, compression gauge, or computerized diagnostic devices) to locate mechanical problems
  on automobiles, trucks, vans, tractors, and various diesel and gasoline powered construction equipment.
• Tune up engines by replacing ignition parts and reconditioning and adjusting carburetors, throttle body
  and port fuel injection systems and/or propane fuel systems.
• Assist with diagnosing, maintaining, repairing, replacing, adjusting, and/or overhauling, engines,
  transmissions, differentials, and clutches.
• Assist with diagnosing, maintaining, repairing and reconditioning hydraulic systems including pumps,
  valves, cylinders, hoses and motors.
• Assist with diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing pneumatic pressure systems, including rebuilding
  pumps, valves, cylinders and hoses.
• Assist with machining steel, stainless steel, brass, bronze, and/or aluminum on a lathe, mill, grinder,
  sander, and/or drill press.
• Laser etch steel, stainless steel, brass, bronze, and/or aluminum on a laser-etching machine using a cadprogram.
• Maintain and repair shop equipment including hoists, grinders, welders, compressors, steam cleaners, and
  presses.
• Occasionally perform quick safety inspections, check all fluid levels (gasoline, brake fluid, wiper fluid,
  motor oil, etc.) and fuel vehicles as needed prior to taking them in to the car wash.
• Occasionally vacuum all interior flooring, clean all vinyl and leather materials with an appropriate
  cleaner/protectant, and clean all interior chrome, mirrors, and glass with an appropriate cleaner, and/or
  protectant in the car wash.
• Occasionally wash-and-wax all exterior vehicle surfaces, scrub all wheel and metal bumper surfaces, and
  rinse with deionized water to prevent water stains.
• Occasionally use an air-blower to remove water trapped in crevices, and clean all exterior chrome,
  mirrors, and glass with an appropriate cleaner, and/or protectant.
• Occasionally steam clean equipment with a high-pressure washer to clean engines, transmissions, body
  components, etc.
• Occasionally fill empty tanks with propane for utility vehicles, maintain the propane usage report, and
  immediately notify the supervisor of malfunctions with any tank and/or with the filling equipment.
• Provide technical guidance and train Maintenance Workers, Senior Maintenance Workers, and
  Mechanics.
• Operate a variety of pneumatic-powered hand tools including impact wrenches, grinders, cutters, etc.
• Operate hoisting equipment to heights up to ten feet.
• Transport material and equipment to the job site or arrange for transport of heavy or bulky items.
• Maintain simple records and time reports.
• Perform all job assignments with high quality, minimum down time, and without wasting materials.
• Perform all Job duties in a safe manner according to Forest Lawn Standards.
• Work directly and/or indirectly with vendors and contractors to resolve technical problems and to give
  assistance as required.
• Work independently with little direct supervision.
• Continue education and skill development to insure that technical ability is compatible to current
  requirements.
• Keep informed on all new technologies and procedures related with job functions.
• Must have a complete set of hand tools.
• Recommend substitute materials to expedite work when required.
• Keep shop and work areas in clean and orderly condition.
• Lock out and block out all unsafe or incomplete work areas.
• Demonstrate satisfactory attendance and reliability. Have less than six occurrences of absence each year.
• More than six occurrences exceed the standards for attendance.
• Attain goals for personal performance improvement agreed upon during the Periodic Performance
  Review.
• Other duties as assigned.

  maintenance.
• Understand the materials, equipment use, and techniques used for automotive and equipment brakes,
  suspension, and steering system repair.

  drive train and axle repair.
• Understand the materials, equipment use, and techniques used for arc-rod, metal-inert gas, tungsten-inert
  gas, and acetylene-oxygen cutting, brazing, soldering, and welding.
• Understand the materials, equipment use, and techniques used for automotive and equipment electrical
  and electronic system repair.
• Understand the materials, equipment use, and techniques used for automotive and equipment heating and
  air-conditioning repair.
• Understand the materials, equipment use, and techniques used for automotive and equipment two and four
  cycle combustible engine and hybrid electric/combustible engine repair.
• Understand the materials, equipment use, and techniques used for automotive and equipment automatic
  transmissions and transaxle repair.
• Ability to learn the materials, equipment use, and techniques used for automotive and equipment engine
  performance.
• Ability to learn the materials, equipment use, and techniques used for lathe, mill, drill press, and related
  machinist work.
• Demonstrate tact and diplomacy when dealing with team members and internal customers.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those in contact throughout the course of the
  duties.
• Must be able to frequently lift up and/or move up to 50lbs, and occasionally lift up to 75-100lbs with assistance.

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE
Education/Training/Experience:
Once alternative is the completion of the following classes/seminars from an accredited trade school,
which is an acceptable credential (but is not required). In addition, obtain internal documented training
covering the classes/seminars with the (F/L) by the department supervisor and/or a Senior Mechanic, and
possess (3) ASE Certifications, and have a minimum of five years of professional-level on-the-job
experience in commercial automotive and/or equipment maintenance and repair.
A second alternative is to receive internal documented training covering all of the classes/seminars listed
below by the department supervisor and/or a Senior Mechanic, and possess (4) ASE Certifications, and
acquire a minimum of seven years of professional-level on-the-job experience in commercial automotive
and/or equipment maintenance and repair.
Note: the completion of one alternative listed above is required to attain this position.
