What is a FTE software engineer?

A FTE Software Engineer is a full-time employee who designs, develops, tests, and maintains software applications or systems. Unlike contractors or part-time workers, FTE (Full-Time Equivalent) engineers typically work a standard schedule (such as 40 hours per week) and receive full benefits from their employer. Their responsibilities can range from writing code and fixing bugs to collaborating with other team members on software projects. FTE Software Engineers are integral to the success of technology-driven companies, as they ensure the reliability and functionality of digital products.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a FTE software engineer?

To thrive as a FTE Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills, problem-solving abilities, and a relevant degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with development tools such as Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and experience with frameworks or cloud platforms is typically required, along with certifications like AWS Certified Developer or Microsoft Certified: Azure Developer Associate being beneficial. Effective communication, teamwork, and adaptability are crucial soft skills that help engineers collaborate and respond to evolving project needs. These skills ensure high-quality code delivery, smooth project execution, and the ability to contribute effectively within dynamic development teams.

What opportunities for professional development and growth can a FTE software engineer typically expect within a company?

As a Full-Time Software Engineer, you can expect a variety of opportunities for career growth, such as participation in mentorship programs, internal technical training, and access to industry conferences. Many companies also offer structured career ladders, allowing you to progress from junior to senior engineering roles or transition into specialized areas like DevOps, data engineering, or leadership positions. Collaboration on cross-functional projects with product managers, designers, and QA teams further enhances your skill set and network, supporting both personal and professional advancement.

About the role

As a Senior Growth Engineer within the Product Engineering organization, you'll work at the intersection of product, marketing and sales to drive user acquisition, activation, retention and revenue growth. You'll build and optimize experiences that help new users onboard seamlessly, drive product adoption and improve our ability to convert free users to paying customers. Youโ€™ll experiment rapidly, analyze user behavior and implement changes that scale Semgrepโ€™s growth engine.

The San Francisco Bay Area location is preferred but open to remote candidates currently located in PST or MST.

You will:
  • Develop and scale growth experiments across the funnelโ€”acquisition, activation, engagement, retention and monetizationโ€”using a mix of product, engineering and data science techniques.
  • Build and optimize user experiences that drive selfโ€‘serve adoption and expand usage within teams.
  • Leverage data and analytics to measure user behavior, uncover insights and identify opportunities for growth.
  • Collaborate crossโ€‘functionally with Sales, RevOps, Marketing, Product and Engineering teams to lead PLG and SLG motions.
  • Automate and enhance workflows for customer acquisition, lead qualification and sales enablement.
  • Contribute to technical growth initiatives, such as inโ€‘app experiments, onboarding flows and usageโ€‘based monetization models.
  • Own and improve growth infrastructure, including experimentation platforms, tracking systems and data pipelines.
You are ideal for this role if you have:
  • Enthusiasm and experience with experimentationโ€‘driven approach to problemโ€‘solving
  • 4+ years of experience writing production software and building web applications. Our stack includes Python, Typescript and Postgres
  • Exposure and experience using AI coding agents / tools
  • Excitement about building for customers, learning their needs, iterating fast and seeing your solutions solve their core problems
  • Excellent and proactive communication, both verbal and written
Some examples projects you might work on include:
  • Collaborate across engineering teams to drive additional new user registrations and activations by reducing the barrier to try and adopt new AI product features
  • Generate personalized security rule sets for use in agentic workflows based on language and security needs
  • Building additional monetization capabilities tied to our AI features and future product SKUs to unlock additional revenue generation
Compensation

Hourly Range: $120-$160 per hour. The hourly rate will be determined based on a number of factors, which may include jobโ€‘related skills, relevant experience, qualifications, location and market data.

What we offer (FTE only)

Our goal is to competitively and fairly compensate every Semgrep employee with a system that equally rewards those who are vocal and those who are less comfortable making demands during the final steps of the hiring process. To that end, we generate internal compensation bands that are used when discussing and negotiating salaries. We update these based on market data to make sure theyโ€™re above the average for comparable roles.

We invest in our employeesโ€™ wellโ€‘being and longโ€‘term success through a competitive, marketโ€‘aligned benefits program that meets or exceeds local market standards across all of the regions in which we hire. Benefits offerings vary by location to reflect local requirements and norms. For more detailed, locationโ€‘specific information, please visit Semgrep Benefits.

Who we are

We bring together people from a wide range of backgrounds and disciplinesโ€”from physics and philosophy to formal methods research and fullโ€‘fledged corporations. Weโ€™re new parents and new grads, dog lovers and dogfooders. We get together often to bike, bake and meet up in parks. In our interactions, we believe respect and honesty go hand in hand, and prioritize both.

Semgrep is an equalโ€‘opportunity employer seeking a diverse range of backgrounds. We value who you areโ€”including your cultural heritage, your socioeconomic status, your age, your race, your gender, your sexual orientation, your disabilities. We value whatโ€™s vitally important to youโ€”your family, your religion, your politics. We value what you love in this worldโ€”your music, your weekend pursuits. We believe in welcoming varied professional backgrounds, educations and interests. If youโ€™re exceptional in your role, believe in Semgrepโ€™s mission and treat Semgrepโ€™s values as your own, you belong here.

Please Note: For USโ€‘based roles open to remote work, we are currently able to hire employees in the following states only: Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, Newโ€ฏYork, North Carolina, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.
