Job description


JOB SUMMARY
Under the direction and general supervision of the Landscape Supervisor the incumbent performs a wide variety of skilled tasks which includes various types of landscaping and grounds maintenance including: irrigation installation, repair, and water management; planting of trees, shrubs, and groundcovers; pruning of trees and shrubs; lawn and ground cover care; landscape demolition and earth moving; refuse & recycling disposal; stocking and storing materials; maintenance of hardscape, site furnishings, and outdoor art work; minor repair and maintenance of tools & equipment; and other landscaping and grounds duties as instructed.
The incumbent is expected to perform assignments under various weather conditions and on various terrains, including stairs, forest trails, hills, slopes, and rocky footpaths.
This position will be required to work Tuesday to Saturday 5 am to 1.30 pm.

The UCSF Facilities Services Department (FS) is committed to creating an exceptional campus physical environment to support the research, teaching, health care and community service mission of the University.   • General landscape maintenance of ground cover, shrubbery, and vines - Prepares soil, removes and replaces plant material; Edges and trims groundcover; Prunes shrubs to control shape, promote health, control and size; Weed management by hand and/or by using specialized tools; Applies fertilizers, pesticides/herbicides when necessary.
  • Tree maintenance - Prunes trees to shape, promote health, and control size; Removes dead or fallen trees and branches; Grinds/removes stumps; Plant and inspects trees, reporting unsafe or hazardous conditions; Removes, replaces, or adjusts tree stakes and ties; Applies fertilizers, pesticides/herbicides when necessary.
  • Turf maintenance - Mow and edge turf by hand or by use of power tools; Turf repair/renovation, including seeding, sodding, aeration, and dethatching; Applies fertilizers, pesticides/herbicides when necessary.
  • Irrigation maintenance - Manage, modify, and troubleshoot automatic irrigation systems; Make minor repairs such as replace broken heads/nozzles, repair broken lines, and valves; Hand water where necessary.
  • Performs refuse and recycling collection, loading/unloading, transport, sorting, and disposal.
  • General litter pick-up around campus grounds.
  • Sweeps/blows/cleans roads, walkways, trails, and paved areas, including gutters and ditches with use of manual and power equipment.
  • Cleans storm sewers, basins, and vaults.
  • General exterior maintenance - Maintain curbs, railings, fences, signs/posts, sidewalks/interlocking pavers, site furnishings, shuttle stops, and outdoor art work. Maintenance includes: hand and power washing, graffiti removal, hand and power sanding, staining, waxing, patching, and leveling.
  • Performs a variety of manual tasks including: digging, trenching, earth movement, and landscape demolition.

Required Qualification
  • Current California Driver's License
  • Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing in English with customers and department staff at all levels
  • Ability to read, write, and follow oral and written instructions, and One (1) year experience as a laborer/gardener; and demonstrated ability to operate assigned tools and equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Working knowledge of water management and irrigation repair
  • Ability to read, write, and follow oral and written instructions
  • Demonstrated experience safely operating and maintaining power tools
  • Ability to read, write, and follow oral and written instructions in English
  • Ability to kneel, stoop, and stand for long periods of time
