Job Description:

**Up to a $7,500 sign on bonus available for eligible candidates

** Schedule: Full Time Day - 4:30 am to 1:00 pm

  • Registers, orders, and accessions pathology specimens into computer systems.
  • Performs specimen processing, embedding, microtomy, routine and special histologic staining, frozen sectioning, cover slipping, and handling of irreplaceable tissue, surgical, and body fluid specimens.
  • Prepares specimens for research requests and transports specimens to/from collection sites, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and regulatory guidelines.
  • May perform special staining on tissues as needed, maintaining solutions and documenting quality control.
  • Adheres to safety requirements and appropriately handles and disposes of chemicals.
  • Follows safety policies including the use of PPE, handwashing, and hazardous chemical handling, and completes required training for handling hazardous waste.
  • Utilizes automated histology equipment properly according to lab procedures and manufacturersโ€™ instructions.
  • Assists pathologists with frozen section preparations and procedural areas with specimen collection such as Fine Needle Aspirations.
  • May prepare cytology specimens. Maintains technical skills and aptitudes related to specimen processing and staining performed in the department or work area assigned. In MSD: Performs Immunohistochemistry (IHC) testing.
  • In FL: If certified for QIHC, may perform IHC testing. May include transport of hazardous waste from the point of generation to a designated secure storage area; employee will be required to complete initial training (prior to handling hazardous waste) and refresher training to include proper handling and transport of hazardous waste, and proper selection, use and disposal of personal protective equipment.
  • Follows established procedures to collect and process biological specimens for analysis.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to prepare tissue specimens to confirm patient diagnoses [Required]
  • Ability to perform complex histological procedures, record and analyze data, and maintain/repair instruments [Required]
  • Up-to-date knowledge of specimen handling, ranging from accession to specimen storage [Required]
  • Knowledge of medical terminology [Required]
  • Ability to maintain safety standards and comply with government regulations in laboratory practices [Required]
  • Up-to-date knowledge of contemporary as well as general histology practice [Required]
  • Must be able to read, write and speak conversational English [Required]
  • Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office [Required]
  • Technical skills and aptitudes related to specimen processing, embedding, microtomy, routine and special histologic staining, cover slipping and handling of irreplaceable tissue, surgical and body fluid specimens performed in department or work area assigned [Required]

  • Ability to effectively communicate in verbal and written English with patients, staff, partners and customers of varied backgrounds in a respectful, effective, and professional manner [Required]
  • Ability to read text and numbers in English, and comprehend, measure, reason, match, problem solve, under supervision [Required]
  • Ability to exercise mature judgment and handle confidential information within applicable regulations [Required]


Education:

  • High School Grad or Equiv [Required]
  •  Associate's [Preferred]


Field of Study:

Associate's in related field in a laboratory science (chemical or biological science) OR equivalent education experience. Clinical laboratory technology from an accredited institution OR Successful completion of at least a 50-week official US military medical laboratory procedures training course and currently hold or have held the military enlisted occupational specialty of Clinical Laboratory Specialist (Laboratory Technician); or qualified and served as high complexity testing personnel on or before April 24, 1995 in a CLIA-certified laboratory as of December 28, 2024, and have done so continuously since December 28, 2024. [Preferred]


Work Experience:

  • 1+ year of technical experience as a histology technician/technologist in a histology laboratory setting [Preferred]
