What are Frontend Developers?

Frontend Developers are professionals who design and implement the visual and interactive aspects of websites and web applications. They use languages like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to ensure that users can interact seamlessly with digital products. Their work involves collaborating with designers and backend developers to create responsive, user-friendly interfaces. Frontend Developers also optimize websites for speed, accessibility, and compatibility across different browsers and devices.

Front-end developers' salaries vary based on experience, location, and skill set, but they typically earn between $60,000 and $120,000 annually. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced developers with skills in frameworks like React or Angular can command higher wages.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Frontend Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Frontend Developer, you need strong proficiency in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, often supported by a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field. These abilities are crucial for creating intuitive, high-performing user interfaces that meet business and user needs.

What are some common challenges faced by Frontend Developers when collaborating with backend teams?

Frontend Developers often encounter challenges such as ensuring seamless integration between frontend interfaces and backend APIs, managing data consistency, and handling discrepancies in data formats or response times. Effective communication is key, as frontend and backend teams need to align on endpoints, error handling, and feature requirements. Regular meetings, clear documentation, and using tools like Swagger or Postman can help bridge gaps and foster smoother collaboration.

What exactly does a front-end developer do?

A front-end developer designs and implements the visual and interactive elements of websites or applications using languages like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. They focus on creating user-friendly interfaces, ensuring responsiveness across devices, and often work with design tools and frameworks to build functional, accessible web experiences.

AI tools can automate certain tasks in frontend development, such as code generation and testing, but they are unlikely to fully replace frontend developers. Developers are needed to design user interfaces, implement complex interactions, and ensure accessibility and user experience. Skills in frameworks, coding, and problem-solving remain essential for frontend roles.

Frontend Engineer

Fluidstack

Austin, TX โ€ข On-site

Full-time

Job description

Job Summary:
Fluidstack is a company focused on building civilization-scale infrastructure for AI. They are seeking a Frontend Engineer to lead the development of their public marketing website and internal tools, making architectural decisions and ensuring high-quality user experiences.
Responsibilities:
โ€ข Develop and operate our homepage: lead technical decisions on architecture, performance, and UX quality for our public marketing site.
โ€ข Build internal UIs: design and ship React-based interfaces for operational dashboards, data center management views, procurement workflows, and other internal surfaces that engineering and ops teams depend on daily.
โ€ข Establish and maintain a component system: build shared component libraries in React with Mantine and/or Tailwind that are documented in Storybook, adopted by the team, and held to a high visual and accessibility standard.
โ€ข Move fast with AI-assisted workflows: you actively use Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, or comparable AI tooling to accelerate development. You are not threatened by these tools; you amplify your output with them.
โ€ข Push interactive experiences: prototype and ship motion, transitions, and marketing-forward interactions using Framer where appropriate. Know when to use it and when to reach for lower-level primitives instead.
โ€ข Manage and extend our CMS/no-code layer: own integrations with Webflow or equivalent for marketing content workflows, with the judgment to know when no-code tooling is the right abstraction and when it is not.
โ€ข Drive frontend engineering quality: write clean TypeScript, enforce type safety, contribute to CI/CD, and set standards for component architecture, state management, and performance profiling.
โ€ข Collaborate cross-functionally: work closely with product designers, infrastructure engineers, and GTM stakeholders. Translate ambiguous asks into well-scoped implementations without needing detailed specs handed to you.
Qualifications:
Required:
โ€ข 3+ years of professional frontend engineering experience shipping production React applications.
โ€ข Strong command of TypeScript and hands-on experience with Mantine, Tailwind CSS, or similar frameworks in production applications.
โ€ข Experience building and maintaining a component library documented in Storybook.
โ€ข Shipped a public-facing marketing site with a high design bar and measurable performance requirements.
โ€ข Proficiency with modern React patterns: hooks, context, server components, and state management (Zustand, Jotai, or equivalent).
โ€ข Experience with PWAs, React Native, or other mobile frameworks.
โ€ข Comfortable with Git-based workflows, CI/CD pipelines, and reviewing your own PRs critically before asking others to.
โ€ข Ability to operate independently on projects without granular task breakdown; you identify what needs to be done.
Preferred:
โ€ข 5+ years of frontend engineering experience, with visible output at devtools, infrastructure, or technical SaaS companies.
โ€ข Fluency with Framer or Webflow for quick prototyping and similar exercises.
โ€ข Active and opinionated use of AI-assisted development tooling (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, v0, or similar) with a clear point of view on where these tools accelerate output and where they introduce risk.
โ€ข Experience with Next.js App Router, including RSC patterns, streaming, and deployment on Vercel or similar edge runtimes.
โ€ข Exposure to data-heavy dashboard UIs: charting libraries (Recharts, Victory, Observable Plot), table virtualization, and real-time data via WebSockets or SSE.
โ€ข Design sensibility that goes beyond implementing specs: you have opinions about typography, spacing, and interaction detail, and can push back on decisions that lower the quality bar.
โ€ข Familiarity with technical infrastructure concepts sufficient to build tooling for data center and compute operations teams without needing domain concepts explained from first principles.
Company:
Fluidstack accelerates the worldโ€™s most ambitious AI projects by removing the bottlenecks to compute. Founded in 2017, the company is headquartered in London, GBR, with a team of 51-200 employees. The company is currently Growth Stage.
