What is a frontend backend developer?

Frontend Backend Developers, often referred to as Full Stack Developers, are professionals skilled in both the client-side (frontend) and server-side (backend) aspects of web development. They design and build user interfaces, ensuring a seamless and interactive experience for users, while also managing server logic, databases, and application integration. Their broad range of expertise allows them to work on multiple layers of a web application, bridging the gap between visual design and technical functionality. This versatility makes them valuable in creating fully functional and cohesive digital products.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a frontend backend developer?

To thrive as a Frontend Backend Developer, you need strong proficiency in web programming languages (such as JavaScript, HTML, CSS for frontend, and Node.js, Python, or Java for backend), as well as a solid understanding of software development principles. Familiarity with frameworks (like React, Angular, or Vue for frontend and Express, Django, or Spring for backend), version control systems (like Git), and relevant certifications such as AWS Certified Developer can be highly beneficial. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills help you effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams and address complex technical challenges. These combined skills ensure you can build, optimize, and maintain robust, scalable web applications that meet user and business needs.

How do frontend backend developers typically collaborate with designers and other developers in a project team?

Frontend Backend Developers often work closely with UI/UX designers to implement visually appealing and user-friendly interfaces based on design specifications. They also collaborate with backend specialists to ensure seamless integration between the client and server sides, often participating in code reviews and joint problem-solving sessions. Regular communication and agile methodologies, such as daily stand-ups and sprint planning, help coordinate tasks and ensure project goals are met efficiently. This collaborative environment allows developers to learn from each other and contribute to both the visual and functional aspects of web applications.

What is the difference between Frontend Backend Developer vs Web Developer?

AspectFrontend Backend DeveloperWeb Developer

Work EnvironmentDesign and implement user interfaces, collaborate with designersBuild complete websites, integrate frontend with backend systems

While both roles involve web development, a Frontend Backend Developer specializes in either the client-side or server-side aspects, whereas a Web Developer often handles both areas to create complete websites.

Is a front-end backend developer a good career or backend developer?

A frontend backend developer is a role that combines skills in both client-side and server-side development, often requiring knowledge of programming languages like JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and backend frameworks. It can be a good career choice due to high demand for full-stack skills, competitive salaries, and opportunities to work on diverse projects. However, it requires continuous learning and proficiency in multiple technologies to stay current in the field.

What does a frontend and backend developer do?

A frontend developer designs and implements the visual elements of a website or application that users interact with, using languages like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. A backend developer builds and maintains the server-side logic, databases, and APIs that support the frontend, often working with languages like Python, Java, or PHP. Both roles require collaboration and knowledge of development tools and frameworks to create functional, user-friendly digital products.

CentralReach

Holmdel, NJ • On-site

Full-time

Job description

CentralReach is a leading provider of autism and IDD care software for Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), multidisciplinary therapy, and special education. Trusted by more than 200,000 users, we enable therapy providers, educators, and employers to scale the way they deliver ABA and related therapies with innovative technology, market-leading industry expertise, and world-class customer satisfaction.
For many therapy providers, payors, and families, the CentralReach website is their first real interaction with our brand - often before they ever speak with our team. We are looking for a Senior Web Developer to own the technical health and ongoing development of the CentralReach website and our broader web presence, including associated subdomains and web properties, ensuring that experience is fast, reliable, and reflective of the brand. This role owns hands-on WordPress development today, with the versatility to support future platform evolution as the business's needs change, and the front-end and back-end skills to build custom functionality beyond what WordPress offers out of the box. The ideal candidate is a strong problem-solver who's comfortable owning a production site end-to-end: theme and plugin development, performance, security, and integrations with other marketing and product systems.
This role reports directly to the Creative Director and will work closely with them day-to-day, alongside Marketing, Design, and Demand Generation.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
Website Development & Maintenance
  • Own the day-to-day development, maintenance, and performance of the CentralReach WordPress site and its associated subdomains and web properties - custom theme and plugin development, updates, security, and uptime
  • Build and maintain pages and layouts using Beaver Builder, our primary WordPress page-building tool, alongside custom-coded theme and plugin work
  • Build and maintain custom functionality using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript where WordPress's native tools and page builders fall short
  • Develop and maintain server-side logic, APIs, and integrations using Node.js to connect the website with internal tools, CRM, and marketing systems
  • Monitor site speed, SEO health, and technical performance; proactively identify and resolve issues before they affect users

Platform Strategy & Future-Readiness
  • Serve as the team's technical point of contact for evaluating and eventually supporting a transition to a new CMS or platform, should the business move in that direction
  • Stay current on modern front-end frameworks (e.g., React) and recommend where they can improve site performance, maintainability, or user experience
  • Document site architecture, custom code, and technical decisions so the platform remains maintainable as the team and stack evolve

Collaboration & Execution
  • Partner with Marketing, Design, and Demand Generation to implement landing pages, campaign builds, A/B tests, and conversion optimization work
  • Translate design files (Figma, Adobe XD, etc.) into responsive, accessible, pixel-accurate front-end code
  • Troubleshoot cross-browser and cross-device issues, and ensure the site meets accessibility and web performance best practices

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Background
  • 5-7 years of professional web development experience, including significant hands-on WordPress development (custom themes, plugins, ACF, hooks/filters)
  • Track record of independently owning a production website - able to take a project from requirements to deployment with minimal oversight
  • Experience working in a marketing or B2B SaaS environment, collaborating with design and marketing stakeholders, is a plus

Technical
  • Strong, current proficiency in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript (required)
  • Hands-on experience with Node.js for back-end logic, APIs, or build tooling (required)
  • Deep, demonstrated WordPress expertise, including custom theme/plugin development and PHP (required)
  • Familiarity with other CMS platforms (e.g., Webflow, Sanity, Contentful, or other headless/traditional CMS systems) is a plus
  • Strong proficiency with React or similar modern front-end frameworks (plus)
  • Understanding of web performance, on-page SEO fundamentals, and accessibility (WCAG) best practices
  • Strong experience with version control (Git) and modern development workflows, including CI/CD pipelines and code review practices

Working Style
  • Self-directed and comfortable owning a system end-to-end, with strong judgment about when to flag risk vs. move forward independently
  • Clear communicator who can explain technical tradeoffs to non-technical stakeholders
  • Adaptable - genuinely excited about evolving tooling and platforms over time rather than being tied to one CMS

GROWTH IN THIS ROLE
As CentralReach's digital footprint grows, there's room for this role to grow with it - from owning the website today to helping shape broader web and website strategy, including any future evaluation of new tools or systems. You'll have a direct line to the Creative Director to help influence that direction as the team and site evolve.
Base Salary Range
