What is a front end web developer?

Front end web developers are professionals who design and build the visible parts of websites and web applications—the parts that users interact with directly. They use technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create responsive, user-friendly interfaces, ensuring that web pages look good and function well across different devices and browsers. Their work involves collaborating with designers and back end developers to implement visual elements, optimize performance, and improve the overall user experience.

What does a front end web developer do?

A front end web developer develops the visual components of a website that are seen and interacted with by a user. This is also called the user interface. In this job, you work with code such as HTML and JavaScript and utilize CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) to layout web pages. Unlike a back end developer, you focus on more than just performance and function. Your responsibilities include developing appealing yet functional desktop and mobile websites and applications, conducting maintenance and updates, and creating site mockups. These duties require you to work closely with back-end developers and stay updated on new technology, website development, and design trends.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a front end web developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Front End Web Developer, you need strong proficiency in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, typically supported by a relevant degree or coding bootcamp experience. Familiarity with frameworks like React or Angular, version control systems such as Git, and an understanding of responsive design tools are highly valued. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective collaboration skills help developers build engaging and user-friendly interfaces. These skills ensure the delivery of functional, visually appealing, and accessible web applications that meet both user and business needs.

What are some common challenges front end web developers face when working on cross-functional teams?

Front End Web Developers often collaborate closely with designers, back-end developers, and product managers, which can present challenges such as aligning design intentions with technical feasibility and managing differing priorities or timelines. Communication is key to ensuring designs are implemented as intended and that technical constraints are understood by all team members. Additionally, coordinating code integration and maintaining consistency across the user interface can require extra attention, especially in agile or fast-paced environments.

Job description

About Full Spectrum Marketing (FSM):
Chase the Afterglow With Us
We are driven by honing a craft and delivering work that is worthy of the win-first for our clients, and ultimately for ourselves. This means we work hard every day in the spirit of chasing the afterglow-that feeling of rest and celebration that comes after a job well done. This driving force becomes our reality through discipline and attention to our core values.
Position Summary
FSM is seeking a WordPress Developer to join our in-house web team. We utilize visual frameworks to empower our clients for future updates, but our internal development process is code-centric. This role is responsible for developing, customizing, and maintaining high-performance websites, ensuring they are optimized for performance, accessibility, and user experience.
You will be responsible for translating high-fidelity Figma designs into responsive websites while adhering to modern front-end best practices and agency coding standards.
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Build and maintain WordPress websites using HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript, using the Divi framework (or a similar framework) as a structural starting point.
  • Implement clean, semantic CSS through child theme stylesheets. You avoid fragile, auto-generated builder classes in favor of descriptive, reusable naming conventions.
  • Extend WordPress capabilities by developing custom PHP shortcodes and functions, ensuring all logic is properly documented and follows security best practices.
  • Precisely translate Figma designs into functional websites, maintaining design integrity and responsiveness across all breakpoints.
  • Maintain website health by optimizing for Core Web Vitals, code minification, and efficient asset loading.
  • Ensure all web builds meet WCAG accessibility standards.
  • Manage and troubleshoot websites within high-performance, Nginx-based WordPress hosting environments, utilizing browser developer tools and server logs for debugging.

Required Experience & Skills
  • Strong foundation in HTML5, CSS3 (Flexbox/Grid), JavaScript, and PHP.
  • 2-5+ years of experience in WordPress development, including child theme customization.
  • Experience with visual builders is helpful, but you must be comfortable writing custom code to overcome builder limitations. Experience with custom theme development is a plus.
  • Proven ability to work from Figma or similar design tools to ensure high-fidelity design implementation.
  • Commitment to writing clean, well-documented, and maintainable code following industry and agency-specific naming conventions.
  • A commitment to continuous learning in a fast-evolving field.

Work Schedule & Location
This is a Hybrid role. Candidates must be within driving distance of our office in Downtown Akron, OH.
