Will AI replace frontend devs?

Front end developers design and implement user interfaces, and while AI tools can automate some repetitive tasks like code generation and testing, they are unlikely to fully replace the need for human creativity, problem-solving, and understanding of user experience. Developers will continue to adapt by integrating AI tools into their workflows and focusing on complex, design-oriented, and interactive aspects of web development.

What are Front End Developers?

Front End Developers are professionals who build and maintain the user-facing parts of websites and web applications. They use technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create interactive, visually appealing, and responsive interfaces that users interact with directly. Their work ensures that websites function smoothly across various devices and browsers, providing a seamless user experience. Front End Developers often collaborate with designers and back end developers to bring digital products to life.

Understanding these differences helps employers and job seekers target the right skills and responsibilities.

What are some common challenges Front End Developers face when collaborating with designers and backend developers?

Front End Developers often work closely with both designers and backend developers to bring digital products to life. A common challenge is ensuring that the design vision is faithfully translated into a responsive, interactive user interface, while also integrating smoothly with backend data and APIs. Communication and alignment between teams are crucial, as misinterpretations can lead to delays or functionality that doesn't meet user expectations. Establishing clear documentation, regular check-ins, and shared tools can help bridge gaps and promote a more seamless workflow.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Front End Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Front End Developer, you need strong skills in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, often supported by a degree in computer science or equivalent experience. Familiarity with frameworks like React or Angular, version control systems such as Git, and responsive design tools is typically required. Creativity, problem-solving, and effective communication are crucial soft skills in this role. These abilities ensure the creation of visually appealing, user-friendly, and high-performing web applications that meet business and user needs.

Job description

About Arteria AI

Arteria AI is the agentic backbone of financial services operations. We build AI-powered tools that help tier-one global institutions manage their most complex document workflows faster, smarter, and at scale.

We were founded by lawyers and financial services practitioners who have spent 20+ years solving documentation problems with the world's largest companies. Our team is mission-driven, high-calibre, and moves fast. Financial services is our domain, and documents are our obsession.

Arteria completed its Series B funding round led by Notable Capital (formerly GGV Capital) in October 2023. Other investors include Citi, Illuminate Financial, Information Venture Partners, and BDC Capital. Arteria has received recognition from Gartner ("Cool Vendor" in AI for Banking), CB Insights (Global Top 100 Most Promising FinTechs, 2024, and Global Top 100 Most Promising AI Startups, 2023), and Finovate (Finovate Awards Winner), among others.

Arteria is headquartered in Toronto, with operations in New York and London.

The Role

We are hiring a Senior Frontend Developer to help build and evolve the web experience at the heart of our platform. You will own significant frontend features end to end, and you will care as much about the problem being solved for the user as the code that solves it.

You will build in React and TypeScript, partnering closely with product and design to turn complex business problems into interfaces that feel simple. As one of our senior frontend engineers, you will also help modernize our frontend tooling and practices, and raise the bar for quality across the team.

You will set direction on frontend patterns and architecture while staying close to the code: shipping features alongside the team, reviewing pull requests, and collaborating with engineers across the stack. We are a small, focused company, and the decisions you make show up directly in the product.

What You'll Do

  • Build, review, and test frontend features end to end in React and TypeScript, contributing directly to the product our customers use every day.
  • Partner closely with product and design to translate business problems into intuitive, polished user experiences.
  • Collaborate with our backend engineers to define clear API contracts and deliver features that work seamlessly across the stack.
  • Help modernize our frontend tooling, standards, and reusable components, raising the bar for quality across the team.
  • Build and evolve the shared component library that powers a consistent, accessible experience across the product.
  • Optimize the performance of data-dense interfaces, from large tables and lists to real-time views.
  • Drive technical discussions and contribute to frontend architecture decisions.
  • Work closely with Product to validate ideas and build prototypes when needed.
  • Use AI tools to accelerate your work, and share effective practices with the team.

What We're Looking For

  • You bring 5+ years of professional frontend engineering experience building production web applications.
  • You have deep expertise in React and TypeScript, on a strong foundation of core JavaScript.
  • You have a product mindset: you are motivated by solving real problems for users, not just shipping tickets.
  • You have a track record of owning features end to end and making sound architectural tradeoffs.
  • You have experience with modern state management, particularly handling server state and data fetching in complex applications.
  • You have optimized the performance of data-dense interfaces and know how to keep large, interactive UIs fast.
  • You have built or contributed to a shared component library or design system.
  • You have a solid grasp of web accessibility standards and care about building inclusive interfaces.
  • You collaborate closely and effectively across disciplines, particularly with design and backend engineering.
  • You have excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly to a range of audiences.
  • You are eager to use AI tools to accelerate your own engineering work and inclined to share effective practices with the team.

Nice to Have

  • A willingness to take on some backend development, or to learn it as needed.
  • Experience modernizing or migrating a legacy frontend codebase.
  • A sensibility for the security, audit, and reliability expectations of regulated industries (finance or similar).

Why Join Us

  • Own significant parts of the frontend experience of an enterprise SaaS platform used by top-tier financial institutions.
  • A senior role with real technical scope, where the decisions you make show up directly in the product.
  • Work with a collaborative, product-focused engineering culture at a small enough company that your decisions matter.

Compensation and Benefits

  • For this role, candidates located in Ontario can expect a base salary range of CAD $120,000-170,000. Placement within the range is determined by relevant experience, skills, and role level.
  • In addition to base salary, this role is eligible for an end-of-year performance bonus and a comprehensive benefits package including health and dental coverage.
  • Comprehensive medical and dental insurance coverage, hybrid working environment, flexible time-off.
