What is a front end developer intern?

Front End Developer Interns are entry-level professionals or students who assist in building and maintaining the user-facing parts of websites and web applications. They work under the guidance of experienced developers to write code in languages like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, ensuring websites are visually appealing and function smoothly. Interns typically learn about responsive design, accessibility, and collaborating within a development team. The role helps them gain practical experience and develop skills needed for a full-time front end development position.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a front end developer intern?

To thrive as a Front End Developer Intern, you need a solid understanding of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, along with a relevant educational background or coursework in web development. Familiarity with frameworks like React or Vue.js, version control systems such as Git, and basic knowledge of debugging tools is typically expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate and learn quickly in a team environment. These skills and qualities are crucial for building responsive, user-friendly interfaces and contributing effectively to real-world development projects.

How do front end developer interns typically collaborate with designers and back-end developers during a project?

Front End Developer Interns often work closely with designers to translate visual mockups into interactive and responsive web pages. They also collaborate with back-end developers to ensure data is properly integrated and that APIs function smoothly on the client side. Effective communication and regular check-ins are key, as interns may need to clarify design specifications or discuss technical constraints. This teamwork not only enhances project outcomes but also helps interns build essential skills for cross-functional collaboration.

Requisition ID: 78242

Job Description:

Description

Join the Skyworks San Jose Design Center in developing high-performance silicon RFIC solutions for next-generation mobile applications. This internship offers hands-on experience in silicon RFIC design while working closely with experienced engineers in a collaborative team environment.

The intern will contribute to the development of RF front-end integrated circuits from initial concept through production. The work will focus on transistor-level circuit design, simulation, layout, and laboratory evaluation of high-performance RF front-end circuits. The intern will also document results and present technical work to colleagues and stakeholders.

Located in Silicon Valley near major customers, the San Jose Design Center provides access to highly integrated semiconductor, module, and embedded RF circuit design, an in-house prototype assembly laboratory, and a world-class RF characterization laboratory. This is an excellent opportunity to strengthen technical skills, expand a professional network, and prepare for a career in RFIC design.

Responsibilities

  • Work with a mentor and design team to combine silicon RFIC design with RF and microwave electromagnetic simulation for high-performance RF switches, low-noise amplifiers, and other RF front-end components.
  • Participate in product development activities, including product definition, architecture, system analysis, transistor-level circuit design, layout or layout supervision, top-level simulation, laboratory debugging, and production test support.

Required Experience and Skills

  • Currently enrolled in an Electrical Engineering (or related) BS or MS programs
  • In-person Summer internship beginning May/June 2027 (3 months) at the San Jose site
  • Familiarity with transistor-level design concepts for silicon RFIC and analog circuits.
  • Understanding of RF active-circuit requirements and design concepts, including noise, linearity, bandwidth, and small-signal and large-signal behavior.
  • Understanding of microwave and RF fundamentals, including S-parameters, Smith charts, matching networks, noise figure, and transmission lines.
  • Experience using time-domain and frequency-domain circuit and electromagnetic simulation tools, such as Cadence Spectre and EMX, Keysight ADS and Momentum, or Ansys HFSS.

Desired Experience and Skills

  • Experience with on-chip passive circuit design; chip tapeout experience is a strong plus.
  • Experience with RF test equipment, including network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, DC power supplies, and RF probes.

The typical pay range for an Engineering intern across the U.S. is currently USD $26.00 - $47.50 per hour and for a Non-Engineering intern across the U.S. is currently USD $22.50 - $42.00 per hour.
