The Utah Historical Society (UHS) is expanding our marketing and communications team. The Graphic Design Specialist is a unique, multidisciplinary role that bridges the gap between graphic design and spatial design. This position is responsible for helping create the visual elements of the Museum of Utah's rotating exhibition space, while also providing graphic design support for existing permanent exhibitions within the museum.
The workload is split, dedicating 30% of their time helping with exhibit design and 70% to broader UHS marketing needs (including posters, event materials, social media graphics, and print collateral).
Key Responsibilities
Marketing Support (70%)
  • Design cohesive signage, wayfinding, promotional assets, and collateral for museum spaces, including the Museum Services Desk and Museum Store.
  • Create materials for public programs, member events, and statewide initiatives. Develop print and digital assets ranging from social media graphics to event banners.
  • Lead the design and layout of institutional documents, including the UHS annual report.
  • Helps maintain and enforce visual identity guidelines.

Exhibit Design Support (30%)
  • Consult and collaborate with the exhibits team to ensure 2D environmental graphics align seamlessly with gallery designs and floor plans. While not responsible for spatial layout or construction, this role designs the signage, typography, and visual elements that guide visitor flow through rotating exhibitions.
  • Design 2D visual layouts, graphics, wall murals, text panels, and labels.
  • Work closely with exhibition specialists and external vendors to prepare clear, high-resolution 2-D print files that are incorporated into the physical space.

Reporting Structure
  • Direct Report: Director of Marketing & Communications
  • Works closely with the Department of Cultural & Community Engagement Marketing and Communications Team for overall brand alignment and cross-departmental agency cohesion
  • Collaborates internally with the Museum of Utah Exhibitions Team, Local History Services Team, Education & Engagement Team, Membership & Development, and other program managers as needed.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • 4+ years of professional graphic design experience that includes exhibit design, graphic design, or interior spatial design.
  • Comfortable using Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop).
  • A portfolio showcasing a balance of standard graphic design (brochures, annual reports, branding) and 3D/environmental design (exhibits, pop-ups, or similar spaces).

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design, Exhibition Design, Interior Design, Environmental Design, or a related field.
  • Prior experience working within a museum, cultural center, or visitor experience environment.

Application Requirements:
  • Cover Letter: Required. Please outline your graphic and spatial design background, along with your experience translating complex historical text into public marketing assets.
