SafeRide America is seeking an experienced Twilio volunteer to help us complete the setup and integration of two-way text messaging with our volunteer management database.

SafeRide America is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization working to prevent impaired driving. Since 2010, we have provided professional designated-driver services, event safety programs, and meaningful volunteer opportunities for people completing court-appointed community service.

We communicate with hundreds of volunteers regarding registration, shift confirmations, schedule changes, reminders, cancellations, and other important information. Our volunteer management database includes an existing Twilio integration or API connection, but we need someone with hands-on Twilio experience to help us configure the account correctly, troubleshoot the integration, and ensure that incoming and outgoing text messaging works reliably.

This is a defined, project-based volunteer opportunity. We are not asking someone to build an entire messaging platform from scratch.

Primary responsibilities

The selected volunteer will help us:

• Review our existing Twilio account and volunteer database configuration.
• Determine what has already been configured and what remains to be completed.
• Connect or properly configure Twilio with our volunteer management database.
• Configure the appropriate Twilio phone number, messaging settings, API credentials, webhooks, or other required components.
• Enable SafeRide staff to send text messages from the volunteer database.
• Enable volunteers’ incoming text responses to be received and associated with the appropriate records or conversations when supported by the database.
• Test outgoing and incoming text-message functionality.
• Troubleshoot delivery failures, configuration errors, or integration problems.
• Help establish basic opt-in, opt-out, consent, and messaging-compliance procedures.
• Recommend appropriate permissions and security practices for staff members using the system.
• Document the final configuration so SafeRide can maintain it after the project is completed.
• Provide a brief training or walkthrough for SafeRide staff.

Desired project outcome

At the completion of the project, SafeRide should have:

• A properly configured Twilio account.
• Reliable outgoing text messaging from our volunteer database.
• Working incoming or two-way messaging to the extent supported by the database.
• Successfully tested volunteer communication workflows.
• A simple written administrator guide.
• Clear instructions for routine maintenance and troubleshooting.
• A basic understanding of Twilio costs, usage monitoring, and messaging requirements.

Examples of messages we need to send

Our primary use will be operational and volunteer-related communications, including:

• Volunteer registration confirmations.
• Shift confirmation requests.
• Upcoming-shift reminders.
• Schedule changes and cancellations.
• Instructions for first-time volunteers.
• Requests for volunteers to reply and confirm attendance.
• Urgent requests for available volunteers.
• Follow-up messages after volunteer service.

This opportunity does not involve political messaging, cold-text marketing, or selling products.

Ideal volunteer qualifications

We are looking for someone with experience in one or more of the following:

• Twilio Programmable Messaging.
• Two-way SMS implementation.
• Twilio phone-number configuration.
• API integrations and webhooks.
• Authentication credentials and secure account configuration.
• Troubleshooting SMS delivery and routing issues.
• U.S. text-messaging registration, consent, and compliance practices.
• CRM, scheduling, nonprofit, or volunteer-management-system integrations.
• Creating technical documentation for nontechnical users.

Experience with nonprofit organizations is helpful but not required. The most important qualifications are practical Twilio experience, reliability, patience, and an ability to explain technical information in understandable language.

Time commitment

We estimate that the project will require approximately 8–15 total volunteer hours, depending on the condition of the existing configuration and whether any custom troubleshooting is necessary.

The work can be completed remotely and on a flexible schedule. We would like the project completed within approximately two to four weeks after the volunteer begins.

The successful completion of this project will help us communicate more consistently with volunteers, reduce missed shifts, fill urgent openings, and strengthen the volunteer program that makes our services possible.

Because this project may involve access to administrative systems and limited volunteer information, the selected volunteer may be asked to sign a confidentiality and data-access agreement. SafeRide will provide access only to the systems and information reasonably necessary to complete the project.
