Job description

Job Title: Space Systems Sewing Specialist (Industrial Sewing Machine Operator)
Job Description

This role focuses on the precise, complex assembly and specialized fabrication of life-critical aerospace and other high-performance textile components using advanced industrial and walking foot sewing machines. The Space Systems Sewing Specialist applies expert-level sewing, fabrication, and quality control skills to produce zero-defect products that must perform reliably under extreme conditions. The position requires exceptional attention to detail, strong mechanical aptitude, the ability to make impactful decisions quickly, and a deep commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement within a dynamic manufacturing environment.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, set up, and execute the fabrication of intricate aerospace components using a variety of industrial sewing machines, including walking foot machines, to consistently achieve zero-defect output.
  • Perform complex assembly operations using both industrial sewing machines and precise hand-tool manipulation to meet internal standards and rigorous aerospace customer quality requirements.
  • Execute detailed assembly procedures by applying specialist knowledge in aerospace-grade sewing and sophisticated manual fabrication techniques to support life-critical product performance.
  • Calibrate and optimize industrial sewing machines, including precise adjustment of thread tension, needle type and size selection, and regulation of presser foot pressure to prevent skipped stitches, thread entanglement, and material deformation.
  • Perform precision stitching on advanced technical materials, including synthetic and polymer-based composites, to fabricate specialized aerospace and high-performance textile components.
  • Interpret and follow complex work instructions, engineering blueprints, multi-layered technical assembly diagrams, and approved sample standards while maintaining strict aerospace-level tolerances.
  • Apply advanced manufacturing expertise to make precise adjustments and modifications that enhance product durability, structural integrity, and performance under extreme operating conditions.
  • Configure and optimize industrial sewing and related fabrication machinery according to stringent aerospace specifications and best practices to ensure consistent, high-quality production output.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex mechanical, process, and design issues that affect production, ensuring optimal machine performance, material integrity, and compliance with aerospace specifications.
  • Leverage expert-level aerospace fabrication knowledge and critical thinking to support the design and refinement of complex products, remove process bottlenecks, and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Influence and support team collaboration by sharing technical expertise, promoting safe work practices, and contributing to a culture of quality and continuous improvement.
  • Maintain an organized, clean, and safe work area in full compliance with safety standards, FOD (Foreign Object Debris) control practices, and quality procedures.
  • Set up machines according to production specifications and established best practices to meet or exceed performance and quality requirements.
  • Convert and stage the correct materials according to work order specifications and engineering requirements.
  • Execute production trials as needed and accurately record results to support process validation and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Complete all required quality and production documentation accurately, legibly, and at the appropriate stages of the manufacturing process.
  • Train manufacturing associates using established training programs and tools, including a structured passport program, to build skills and ensure consistent operating standards.
  • Actively work toward completion and advancement within the manufacturing operator passport program to expand capabilities and responsibilities.
  • Perform advanced quality inspections by verifying work against detailed dimension sheets and customer engineering drawings to ensure full conformance and traceability.
  • Carry out any additional tasks or responsibilities as assigned, demonstrating flexibility and a proactive approach to supporting critical business and production needs.
Essential Skills
  • High school diploma or equivalency certificate (GED).
  • Minimum of 5+ years of progressive, expert-level experience in complex industrial and walking foot sewing and textile fabrication, with a focus on aerospace soft goods manufacturing or similarly demanding zero-defect environments.
  • Mastery in operating, calibrating, and optimizing a wide range of industrial sewing machines, including heavy-duty and specialized automated systems, to achieve aerospace-grade precision and structural integrity.
  • Exceptional ability to read, interpret, and execute highly complex engineering blueprints, multi-layer assembly diagrams, and intricate work instructions, including understanding critical layer marks and material applications.
  • Profound understanding of advanced stitching termination techniques, including precision backstitching and expert calibration of thread tension across various advanced materials to prevent distortion and stitch anomalies.
  • Expertise in processing and handling specialized technical fabrics and advanced threads such as Kevlar, Nomex, Nextel, coated materials, and conductive threads, with a clear understanding of their unique fabrication requirements.
  • Advanced proficiency in material handling, including precise measuring, intricate cutting using specialized tools such as cutters, shears, and laser cutting systems, while minimizing material waste.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply ultra-precise stitching parameters, including maintaining exact stitch lengths, threads per inch, and consistent stitch patterns for both machine and highly specialized hand-stitching operations.
  • Expert-level command of specialty tooling and fixtures used in aerospace soft goods assembly, including precision snap presses, specialized grommet dies, and heat-sealing equipment.
  • Proven ability to conduct advanced quality inspections and verify work against detailed dimension sheets and complex engineering drawings to ensure absolute conformance and traceability.
  • Deep understanding of machine calibration principles, timing synchronization, and tension management to maintain peak machine performance and consistent product quality.
  • Strong commitment to working within and continually improving established aerospace safety protocols, FOD control practices, and rigorous quality management systems.
  • 1–2 years of general manufacturing experience in addition to specialized sewing experience.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English to follow complex instructions and documentation.
  • Ability to read and understand complex work instructions and technical documentation.
  • Basic computer and math skills, including familiarity with tools such as Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Self-motivated and detail-oriented approach with a strong focus on precision and quality.
  • Team-oriented mindset with the ability to collaborate effectively in a production environment.
  • Ability to lift 50 to 75 pounds, depending on location and task requirements.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience in aerospace or high-performance manufacturing environments where zero-defect standards are critical.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude, including familiarity with electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and troubleshooting concepts related to production and sewing equipment.
  • Knowledge and practice of lockout/tagout and other industrial safety procedures when working with machinery.
  • Experience setting up machines to specific production and quality specifications, including fine-tuning parameters to optimize output.
  • Background in conducting production trials, documenting results, and using data to support process improvements.
  • Experience training or mentoring manufacturing associates using structured training programs or competency passports.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple competing priorities while maintaining focus on safety, quality, and on-time delivery.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills to address complex mechanical, process, and design-related challenges.
  • High level of personal accountability and reliability in meeting production goals and quality standards.
