Job description

Description:

Fireman Excavating is seeking a dependable and safety-focused Sweeper Truck Operator to operate street-sweeping equipment on public roadways. This position is responsible for safely removing dirt, gravel, debris, and other materials from travel lanes, shoulders, intersections, bridges, and roadway infrastructure to improve public safety and maintain clean driving surfaces.

This position routinely works in active traffic and may require daytime, nighttime, weekend, holiday, and emergency response assignments. Experience preferred but we are willing to train the right person.


Safely operate a roadway sweeper truck on city streets, state highways, and other public roadways.

  • Remove dirt, gravel, glass, leaves, and roadway debris from travel lanes, shoulders, bridges, intersections, and medians.
  • Follow assigned routes while maintaining safe operations in live traffic.
  • Work closely with TMA crews and traffic control personnel.
  • Perform daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections in accordance with company and DOT requirements.
  • Inspect and maintain hydraulic components, brooms, tires, lights, warning devices, and safety equipment.
  • Properly dispose of collected debris at approved disposal facilities.
  • Monitor equipment performance and report mechanical issues or needed repairs immediately.
  • Keep the sweeper truck clean and professionally maintained.
  • Follow all company safety policies, DOT regulations, TxDOT requirements, and traffic control procedures.
  • Respond to emergency roadway cleanup operations when assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements:Minimum Qualifications
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) preferred but not required.
  • Ability to safely operate large commercial vehicles in active traffic.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to safe work practices.
  • Reliable attendance and dependable transportation.
  • Ability to pass required pre-employment and random drug and alcohol testing.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience operating a roadway sweeper, dump truck, water truck, or other heavy equipment.
  • Experience working on highways, arterial roadways, or roadway maintenance contracts.
  • Familiarity with TxDOT work zone safety requirements and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (TMUTCD).
  • Basic mechanical knowledge of diesel-powered equipment.
Physical Requirements
  • Sit and operate equipment for extended periods.
  • Frequently climb into and out of commercial vehicles.
  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Bend, kneel, reach, and climb as needed during inspections and maintenance.
  • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, and wind.
  • Work safely around live traffic and roadway hazards.
Work Schedule

This position may require:

  • Day or night shifts ($50.00 night shift differential applies)
  • Weekends and holidays
  • Overtime
  • Emergency roadway response
  • Extended work hours based on weather events, accidents, or roadway maintenance schedules
Safety Expectations

Safety is the highest priority. Operators are expected to maintain constant awareness of surrounding traffic, comply with all work zone traffic control procedures, wear required personal protective equipment, and immediately report unsafe conditions, accidents, equipment damage, or roadway hazards.
