Structural Engineer

Job Description

This role is for a licensed Structural Engineer who will serve as the internal structural engineering expert within a multidisciplinary architecture and engineering practice. You will support healthcare, institutional, and commercial building projects from concept through construction, while helping expand the firm’s in-house engineering capabilities. This highly visible position is ideal for an experienced Professional Engineer who wants to shape and grow a structural engineering practice within an established design firm and collaborate closely with architects, MEP engineers, contractors, and consultants.

Responsibilities

  • Design and produce stamped structural construction documents for commercial, institutional, and healthcare projects.
  • Perform structural analysis, member sizing, and foundation design appropriate to project requirements and site conditions.
  • Coordinate the structural scope within Revit/BIM environments and participate in multidisciplinary coordination meetings.
  • Collaborate with architects and project teams on structural system selection, bay spacing, floor-to-floor heights, and lateral system strategies.
  • Prepare structural specifications and ensure alignment with project goals and applicable codes.
  • Review shop drawings, submittals, and RFIs during construction administration to verify compliance with design intent.
  • Coordinate with geotechnical consultants regarding foundation recommendations and soil-bearing assumptions.
  • Conduct site visits and field observations to verify compliance with construction documents and design intent.
  • Partner with architects, MEP engineers, consultants, contractors, and clients throughout all phases of project execution.
  • Support business development efforts through proposal preparation and participation in client presentations.
  • Establish structural standards, specifications, details, and best practices as the firm’s engineering capabilities continue to grow.
  • Serve as a technical resource and internal structural authority throughout all phases of project delivery.

Essential Skills

  • Licensed Structural Engineer with 7+ years of experience designing commercial, healthcare, and institutional facilities.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required, with eligibility for Michigan PE or reciprocity.
  • Strong proficiency in Revit for structural design and coordination within BIM environments.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD for the preparation and modification of structural drawings.
  • Experience with structural analysis software such as RISA, RAM, ETABS, or equivalent tools.
  • Demonstrated experience producing stamped construction documents for building projects.
  • Experience performing structural analysis and member sizing for steel, concrete, masonry, light-gauge, and heavy timber structures.
  • Experience coordinating closely with architects and MEP teams throughout design and construction phases.
  • Experience supporting projects through construction administration, including responding to RFIs and reviewing shop drawings and submittals.
  • Knowledge of applicable building codes and standards relevant to structural design.
  • Strong client-facing communication skills, including the ability to present technical concepts clearly.
  • Ability to work independently while effectively collaborating within multidisciplinary teams.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Structural, Civil, or Architectural Engineering.
  • Master’s degree in a related engineering discipline is preferred.
  • Experience with healthcare or institutional projects is highly desirable.
  • Experience with concrete design, steel design, masonry design, and light-gauge and heavy timber systems.
  • Experience working in a BIM-based environment and coordinating models with other disciplines.
  • Ability to help establish and refine structural engineering standards, details, and best practices.
  • Interest in helping build and lead a growing structural engineering practice within an established design firm.
  • Comfort presenting to clients and contributing to proposal development and business development efforts.

Work Environment

The position is based within a multidisciplinary architecture and engineering team operating in a hybrid model, with four days in-person and one day working from home each week. The team collaborates closely across architecture, structural, and MEP disciplines, as well as with consultants, contractors, and clients, throughout all phases of design and construction. Engineers work in a highly collaborative environment that leverages Revit, BIM, AutoCAD, and structural analysis software such as RISA, RAM, and ETABS.
