From Home Radiology Shadowing information

How do I shadow a radiologist?

To shadow a radiologist, you should contact hospitals, clinics, or imaging centers to inquire about shadowing opportunities, often requiring a formal request or application. Gaining relevant knowledge of medical imaging and demonstrating professionalism can improve your chances; some programs may require background checks or health clearances. Shadowing typically involves observing radiologists during their work to gain insight into medical imaging procedures and interpretation.

Can I work from home in radiology?

Radiology professionals, including radiologists and radiology assistants, often work in clinical settings due to the need for direct patient interaction and access to imaging equipment. However, some radiology tasks such as image interpretation and report writing can be performed remotely with secure access to hospital systems and appropriate certifications. Remote work opportunities are increasing but typically require specialized skills and compliance with healthcare regulations.

Is virtual shadowing legit?

Virtual radiology shadowing is a legitimate way for students to observe radiologists' work remotely, often through supervised online platforms that simulate clinical environments. However, the quality and accreditation of these programs vary, so it is important to verify that the program is reputable and offers meaningful learning experiences. Virtual shadowing can help develop understanding of radiology practices but may not fully replace in-person clinical exposure.

Can you job shadow remotely?

Remote radiology shadowing is possible and often involves reviewing medical images and case discussions via secure online platforms. However, hands-on clinical shadowing typically requires in-person observation at healthcare facilities. The availability of remote shadowing depends on the program's structure and institutional policies.

Job description

The Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) Department of Diagnostic Radiology is seeking a full-time board-certified radiologist to join our team at Hillsboro Medical Center (HMC), located in a lovely suburb of the western Portland metropolitan area. Hillsboro has a rapidly growing population and is just a short 30-minute drive to downtown Portland. It is also in close proximity to many Oregon attractions, including wineries, the coast, mountains, forests, and parks. It is an ideal place to live and work. We are a welcoming, supportive team that prides itself on fairness, inclusivity and a collegial environment, valuing high quality patient care combined with excellent work-life balance.

We are a shift-based practice with mostly 4-day work weeks (when fully staffed, 1-2 non-clinical days will be typical). All shift types are equally and equitably distributed across partners. Hours are generally 8 am to 4:30 pm with overnight nighthawk coverage from 6 pm to 8 am. Call is one in five with week-day call shift from 8 am to 6 pm and weekend call shifts also from 8 am to 6 pm. Additionally, we provide home workstations to allow for teleworking or “work from home” options on weekday and week-end call shifts if desired. The team covers one hospital and one imaging center in Hillsboro, Oregon.

Sign-on bonus and relocation funds available!

We are expanding our general radiology services as part of the Community Division of OHSU at Hillsboro Medical Center. Although general radiology coverage is expected, we are looking to complement our sub-specialty trained team, which includes Neuro, Body, MSK, and Cardiothoracic imaging trained radiologists.

Candidates should be comfortable reading all radiology modalities, including CT, US, and MRI as well as some mammography and PET scans; more specialized modality cases are typically read by the respective sub-specialty trained members of the practice. Light general radiology procedures are also performed, such as CT- and ultrasound-guided drainages/biopsies, arthrograms/joint injections, and breast biopsies. A separate IR service covers more specialized interventional procedures. Case mix is representative of a suburban community-based radiology practice.

  • Candidates must be ABR board certifying eligible after passing the ABR Core Exam and successful completion of an ACGME-accredited residency. International Medical Graduates are eligible for the position provided they have a valid ECFMG certificate, have completed an ACGME-accredited residency and ABR Core Exam, or are otherwise board-eligible through the ABR IMG Alternate Pathway program.
  • Candidates at all levels of practice including those currently undertaking residency or fellowship training are encouraged to apply.
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accomodation.

Please upload a cover letter with your application. Applications will be reviewed as they are received.

The position offers equal salary and vacation time with partners, starting from day 1 with a starting salary of $583K and a sign-on bonus of $35k. OHSU provides a competitive salary and sign-on bonus, relocation reimbursement, and an extensive benefits package including generous retirement benefits. Shifts can be exchanged with other team members, and if desired, there are opportunities for additional shifts with commensurate compensation based on salary.

OHSU also offers a generous CME allowance and institutionally provides a supportive environment if there is a desire to learn or develop new clinical skillsets or programs.

We are Oregon's only public academic health center.
In addition to caring for patients, we lead groundbreaking research. We also train the next generation of health care professionals. As Portland's largest employer, we give you opportunities to learn and advance in a system of hospitals and clinics across Oregon and Southwest Washington.
All are welcome.
OHSU welcomes people of all ages, ethnicities, genders, national origins, religions and sexual orientations. We are striving to build an anti-racist, multicultural institution and encourage people with diverse backgrounds to apply.
