Job Description:
INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY: CONTROLS ENGINEERING (TWO POSITIONS AVAILABLE)
The Controls Engineering Intern supports the Controls Engineering team through a structured rotational program designed to provide practical, hands-on exposure to controls and automation engineering in a medical device manufacturing environment. The intern is anchored to a primary functional area (such as documentation and schematic support, machine commissioning, or sustaining engineering) while receiving structured exposure to additional functional areas through shadowing, design review participation, and assigned cross-functional mini-projects. The intern operates under the guidance of an assigned engineer mentor and the Controls Engineering Leader, executes defined tasks with appropriate supervision, and escalates non-standard conditions appropriately. This role is intended to evaluate candidates for potential full-time conversion into a Controls Engineer I role following graduation.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Completes assigned work within a primary functional area, with structured exposure to additional areas across the rotation.
  • Assists with documentation tasks including updating schematics, work instructions, test records, and bills of material from engineer-provided redlines or templates.
  • Supports schematic drafting using SolidWorks Electrical under the direction of the assigned engineer mentor.
  • Assists with setup, wiring verification, and basic hardware configuration of control panels and machine subsystems.
  • Executes defined test procedures, records results, and reports findings to the assigned engineer.
  • Observes and supports machine commissioning activities to build practical exposure to PLC, HMI, and motion control systems.
  • Builds foundational familiarity with Beckhoff, Allen-Bradley, and OMRON PLC platforms through guided exposure.
  • Participates in design reviews, team meetings, and engineering discussions as a learning participant.
  • Completes one or more defined mini-projects intended to demonstrate growth, ownership, and applied learning.
  • Maintains organized records of completed work and flags any non-standard conditions to the assigned mentor.
  • Adheres to all safety, quality, and documentation standards required in a medical device manufacturing environment.
  • Actively engages in feedback discussions and applies coaching to demonstrate growth across the program.
  • Ad-hoc projects and learning assignments as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS / EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's degree program in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a related discipline.
  • Sophomore standing or higher preferred.
  • Available for either a full-time summer internship or a part-time internship during the academic year.
  • Coursework or project experience involving circuits, digital logic, programming, or controls is preferred.
  • Prior internship, co-op, lab, or hands-on project experience is a plus but not required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Foundational understanding of electrical and electronic principles from coursework or hands-on experience.
  • Ability to read basic electrical schematics and wiring diagrams, or willingness to learn quickly.
  • Exposure to at least one programming language (e.g., C, C#, Python, structured text) through coursework or projects.
  • Familiarity with standard office and engineering software (Microsoft Office); exposure to SolidWorks, AutoCAD Electrical, or similar tools is a plus.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly document work and ask informed questions.
  • Attention to detail, particularly when executing defined procedures or maintaining documentation.
  • Demonstrated curiosity, initiative, and willingness to learn from experienced engineers and technicians.
  • Ability to receive and apply feedback constructively across the rotation.
  • Ability to work both independently on assigned tasks and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Reliability and professionalism appropriate to a regulated medical device manufacturing environment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The physical demands of the role involve prolonged periods of sitting at a desk, using a computer, and engaging in repetitive hand movements for tasks like typing or writing. Occasional standing, walking, and lifting objects up to 20 pounds may be required. This role may also include frequent use of standard office equipment such as printers, copiers, and telephones. Good vision and hearing are needed to perform tasks effectively and communicate with team members.
The work environment for this role is primarily an office setting located near a manufacturing facility. While the office is climate-controlled and typically quiet, occasional exposure to noise, vibrations, or odors from the nearby production area may occur. Employees may need to enter the manufacturing floor occasionally, requiring adherence to safety protocols, including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
