Humana is seeking a hands-on Lead Engineer to guide the design, development, and delivery of enterprise APIs, GraphQL services, and microservices that support Humana and CenterWell digital experiences.
In this role, you will provide technical leadership across engineering teams, help drive delivery execution, and ensure solutions are secure, scalable, resilient, observable, and ready to support emerging AI-enabled experiences. You will partner closely with Product Owners, Architects, business stakeholders, API governance teams, and engineering teams to deliver high-quality platform capabilities that serve both traditional applications and next-generation AI use cases.

Location: Louisville, KY or Dallas, TX (Work At Home with occasional office visits)

What You Will Do

  • Lead the design, development, and implementation of enterprise APIs, GraphQL services, REST APIs, microservices, and event-driven capabilities.
  • Provide hands-on technical leadership through architecture discussions, design reviews, coding, troubleshooting, performance tuning, and mentoring.
  • Guide API design decisions across REST and GraphQL patterns, including schema design, resolver design, query optimization, federation considerations, API composition, versioning, and backward compatibility.
  • Drive sprint execution and delivery accountability to ensure teams meet commitments with consistent quality.
  • Partner with Product Owners, Architects, and business stakeholders to evaluate requirements, assess technical feasibility, and deliver scalable solutions.
  • Establish and promote engineering best practices for API design, GraphQL schema governance, API security, quality, observability, resiliency, and operational excellence.
  • Support modernization initiatives using cloud-native architecture, automation, CI/CD, DevOps practices, containers, and API gateway patterns.
  • Champion production readiness, incident response, root cause analysis, performance optimization, and continuous improvement.
  • Help evolve enterprise services so they can be securely consumed by web and mobile applications, enterprise platforms, GraphQL clients, AI agents, copilots, and agentic workflows.
  • Support API onboarding, documentation, governance, cataloging, and deployment practices across enterprise API platforms and gateways.
