Living in Chicago

Chicago offers big-city energy with a distinctly livable, neighborhood-driven feel. As one of the largest and most architecturally striking cities in the country, it combines a thriving downtown core with a rich mix of communities, each with its own character - from the lakefront high-rises of the Loop to the tree-lined streets of Lincoln Park and the vibrant, multicultural neighborhoods on the city's north, south, and west sides.

The city's food scene is legendary, its arts and music culture runs deep, and its lakefront - with miles of parks, beaches, and trails along Lake Michigan - offers a rare combination of urban convenience and outdoor space. Chicago is also a major hub for academic medicine, home to leading hospitals, research institutions, and residency programs, making it a strong professional community for physicians.

Compared to coastal cities, Chicago offers considerably more affordable housing and cost of living, along with a central location and major airport hub that make travel - whether for work or leisure - easy from nearly anywhere. For physicians drawn to mission-driven, community-focused medicine, Chicago's diverse population and strong safety-net health infrastructure offer meaningful, impactful work.
