Overview
  • Must be able to apply numerous techniques for lifting, moving and transferring patients.
  • Knowledge of transfer methods to decide which transfer method is the safest choice for each patient.
  • Competent in patient lifting, transfer, positioning and transport.
  • Competent in providing patient safety during movement.
  • Knowledgeable in CPR, infection control, customer relations, equipment management and associated policies and procedures.
  • Work with the healthcare team to perform purposeful rounding on the units utilizing pre-defined response criteria

Responsibilities
  • Safely transport patients throughout the hospital using wheelchairs, stretchers, beds, vehicles, and other approved patient transport equipment.
  • Assist ambulatory patients during transport while ensuring patient comfort, dignity, and safety.Perform patient transfers using proper body mechanics, safe patient handling techniques, and approved lifting equipment.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the use of patient lifting and transfer devices, including gait belts, mechanical lifts, and other mobility aids.
  • Collaborate with nursing staff and other team members to safely lift, reposition, transfer, and mobilize patients.
  • Consistently follow all patient safety protocols and utilize appropriate safety equipment during patient movement and transport.
  • Verify that stretcher and bed brakes are engaged and equipment is functioning properly prior to patient transport or transfer.
  • Maintain continuous communication and availability through walkie-talkies, telephones, and capacity management systems.
  • Respond promptly to patient transport and safe lift requests in accordance with departmental service standards.
  • Receive, prioritize, and coordinate patient escort requests and departmental delivery needs to support efficient patient flow.
  • Accurately document patient transport and safe lift activities and submit required logs at the end of each shift.
  • Report patient concerns, safety issues, equipment malfunctions, and operational problems promptly to the Charge Nurse, Nurse Supervisor, or Nurse Manager.Clean, disinfect, and maintain wheelchairs, stretchers, and other transport equipment after each patient use in accordance with infection prevention standards.
  • Apply designated cleaning identification labels (e.g., "Green is Clean" tape) to sanitized equipment.
  • Monitor and replenish supplies at designated cleaning and equipment stations.Assist with patient positioning, turning, ambulation, lifting, and other mobility-related activities.
  • Support patient movement during treatments, dressing changes, and other clinical care procedures as needed.
  • Participate in purposeful hourly rounding in collaboration with the healthcare team.
  • Provide accurate and complete shift handoff communication to ensure continuity of care and services.
  • Work collaboratively with interdisciplinary team members to support patient care goals and operational efficiency.
  • Demonstrate initiative by seeking and completing additional assignments as directed by the Nursing Supervisor, Nurse Manager, or departmental leadership.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications
Previous patient care experience preferred.
Current Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification required.
Ability to safely lift more than 50 pounds and push/pull more than 200 pounds without restrictions.
Demonstrated strong communication, customer service, and interpersonal skills.
Successful completion of Lift Team, Transport Team, and Patient Services orientation and training.
Completion of body mechanics training and periodic competency evaluations, as required.
Commitment to maintaining physical fitness necessary to perform job duties.
Ability to read, write, perform basic math calculations, and accurately follow instructions.
Ability to work effectively under pressure in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
Strong ability to communicate professionally with patients, visitors, and healthcare staff.
Ability to perform repetitive tasks and follow established procedures with accuracy and attention to detail.
Must be capable of meeting all physical and functional requirements of the position without restrictions.
