Job description

You will work with large and complex datasets to identify trends and anomalies, investigate market and operational outcomes, and develop forward-looking analytics that help MISO better understand what is happening in the market - and what may happen next. You will also partner closely with MISO's Digital Technology team to move analytics from an idea to a scalable solution, building pipelines, dashboards, alerts, and predictive tools that support better and faster decision-making.
In one year as our Senior Data Scientist - Market Evaluation, you will know you were successful if you:
  • Use statistical, economic, and advanced data analysis to uncover meaningful patterns in market operations, participant activity, pricing, supply and demand, market anomalies, and market design.
  • Develop forward-looking and predictive analytics that help identify emerging market trends, behaviors, and potential issues.
  • Build automated alerts, dashboards, and analytical tools that flag unusual market outcomes and make complex information easier to understand and act upon.
  • Lead end-to-end data science projects - from defining the problem and project scope through development, implementation, and delivery.
  • Investigate specific market outcomes and operational events using data queries, MISO systems, and simulation tools to identify root causes and evaluate potential scenarios.
  • You contribute to team goals, create useful insights, ask relevant questions, and help identify opportunities to improve market performance

We are looking for someone with:
  • A Bachelor's degree in Data Science, Economics, Operations Research, or a related field; a Master's degree is preferred.
  • At least eight (8) years of relevant experience working with data science, advanced analytics, economic analysis, or related disciplines.
  • Strong programming and analytical experience using tools such as Python, R, SAS, EViews, or VBA.
  • Experience developing machine learning and AI-driven predictive analytics, which may include regression and forecasting, classification and clustering, time-series forecasting, deep learning, natural language processing, and large language models.
  • Experience with common data science and machine learning frameworks such as NumPy, TensorFlow, PyTorch, and Scikit-learn.
  • Experience creating dashboards and data visualization solutions using tools such as Power BI, Tableau, Plotly, or Streamlit.
  • Experience working with cloud platforms and modern software engineering practices, including Azure, AWS, GCP, and Git.
  • Strong knowledge of data management and data engineering, including SQL, NoSQL, ETL processes, and data warehousing.

Even better if you have experience with energy market forecasting and analysis, power system operations, statistical or econometric analysis, electricity market design, or related software development. Previous experience with a Regional Transmission Organization (RTO), Independent System Operator (ISO), utility, or other energy market participant would be especially valuable.
If you enjoy using data science to solve complex, real-world problems - and want your work to help shape the reliability and efficiency of the electric grid - we would love to hear from you!
At MISO, your work helps ensure the reliable operation and continued evolution of one of the world's largest and most complex electric grids. In this role, you'll have an opportunity to help shape how MISO responds to rapidly growing large-load demand while strengthening the connection between where the grid is headed and what it needs to reliably deliver today.
The base salary compensation range being offered for this role is $119,000-$144,000 USD annually. Base salary range for this position is included in accordance with requirements of various state/local pay transparency legislation. Please note that salaries may vary for different individuals in the same role based on several factors, including but not limited to location of the role, individual competencies, education/professional certifications, and qualifications/experience.
Position is also eligible for an annual bonus if individual performance and company objectives are met. At MISO we offer a comprehensive benefits package, including 401k, vacation, sick and safe time, available on your first day of employment.
Transformative innovation is happening in the electric industry, from digitalizing homes and distributed resources to renewable energy and an ever-changing grid. MISO manages the electricity superhighway in the Central U.S. Using groundbreaking research and sophisticated technology, our highly skilled employees ensure power flows reliably to 47 million people throughout North America. Operating the electricity grid, running a robust energy market, and planning for a bright future - it's what our immensely hard-working and dedicated team does every day.
