Job description

Overview

The Lifestyle Coach is responsible for guiding and motivating individuals towards achieving their health and wellness goals by delivering expert instruction in fitness, nutrition, and lifestyle management. The Coach will participate in various evidence-based programs at the YMCA, such as: Diabetes Preventative Program, Enhance Fitness, and Clinical Conditioning, which involve leading group training classes, offering personalized coaching, and providing support for individuals with various health conditions, such as diabetes, trauma-related injuries, cancer and other physical impairments. The Coach will demonstrate proper techniques, offer workout modifications to ensure safety, and create a positive, engaging environment that fosters community and personal growth. Additionally, this position involves administrative tasks such as maintaining client records, monitoring progress, and ensuring compliance with confidentiality standards. The Coach will have a deep understanding of lifestyle wellness, trauma recovery, diabetes, and nutrition with a passion for helping individuals improve their physical and mental well-being.ย

Schedule

  • Location: This class will be held at the Jennifer Moreno Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center - La Jolla
  • Tai Chi or Boxing Group Fitness Instructor. Tuesdays or Wednesdays between 10:00am-12:00pm
Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate empathy and provide motivation, guidance, and customer service while understanding individual needs related to diabetes, wellness, and trauma-related injuries
  • Tailor exercise techniques to suit individuals who have experienced physical trauma, such as limb loss,individuals with pre-diabetes diagnostics, or individuals who have been diagnosed with cancer
  • Lead group training classes, ensuring engagement and participation in sessions with a large group of individuals
  • Foster a positive participant experience by welcoming attendees and keeping them actively involved in their wellness program
  • Provide guidance on proper workout form, offering technique modifications, nutrition, and providing clear cues when necessary to ensure a safe workout routine
  • Utilize electronic presentation equipment to manage class schedules and maintain effective time management during sessions
  • Build a supportive community by developing positive relationships, learning participants' names, and helping individuals achieve their health and wellness goals
  • Perform administrative duties, including managing diabetic logs, participant assessments, and confidentialprogress charts
  • Support with document audits to ensure the accuracy and proper storage of all participant data and progress information
  • Monitor client progress, evaluate training effectiveness, and stay updated on industry trends and best practices for trauma and diabetes-related exercise techniques
  • Other duties as assignedย 
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree with major course work in Psychology, Behavioral science, Nutrition, Counseling, or related field requiredย 
  • 2+ years' of work experience as a group exercise facilitator, personal trainer, nutritionist or related field required
  • Equivalency qualifications to be considered if obtained a high school diploma or GED, or training that ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance, supplemented by specialized training, and 6+ years' work experience as a group exercise facilitator, personal trainer, nutritionist or related field
  • YMCA LIVESTRONG Instructor, Enhance Fitness Instructor, ConMigo certification required
  • Lifestyle Coach Certification required
  • Heath Heart Ambassador certification required
  • Willingness to undergo training and certifications as new evidence-based programs arise
  • Licensing, state law and our government funders require that staff within YMCA of San Diego County be fingerprinted, prior to reporting to work, and includeย subsequentย arrest notificationsย 
  • CPR/AED, and First Aid Certification, must include Adult and Child/Infant, obtained withinย 30 daysย ofย hireย and must be from one of the following certifying organizations:ย 
    • American Red Crossย 
    • American Heart Associationย 
    • American Safety & Health Institute
