What You’ll Do 

As a Transport Paramedic ERT, you will report to the Manager/Director of Transport. Under the supervision of the Medical Director, performs paramedic procedures approved by the Advanced Life Support Committee and serves as a member of the Beacon Health System Transport Team.

Transport Paramedic ERT Job Responsibilities 

  • Performs advanced paramedic procedures approved by the Advanced Life Support Committee.
  • Functions as a member of the Beacon Health System Transport Team managing patients with critical/emergent conditions including respiratory distress, trauma, cardiac events, diabetic emergencies, infectious diseases, drowning, poisoning, and other acute conditions.
  • Applies emergency, critical care, and clinical skills to assess, stabilize, and transport patients.
  • Collaborates with care teams to develop transport plans, manage patient needs, and address emergency situations.
  • Maintains a safe and therapeutic transport environment while proactively managing risks.
  • Operates ambulance communication systems including two-way radios and GPS mapping.
  • Maintains transport logistics including contact lists, door codes, routes, and referral hospital maps.
  • Administers oxygen therapy and performs airway management procedures including suctioning techniques.
  • Monitors, assesses, and documents patient status, treatments, vital signs, interventions, and transport care.
  • Initiates IV and intraosseous access, administers fluids, obtains lab samples, and performs point-of-care testing.
  • Performs advanced life support procedures including CPR, intubation, cardioversion, defibrillation, and tension pneumothorax relief.
  • Administers medications according to St. Joseph County EMS guidelines.
  • Provides patient status follow-up to requesting agencies in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Participates in evaluation, inspection, maintenance, restocking, and repair coordination of equipment and ambulances.
  • Completes and maintains required certifications/training including ACLS, BLS, PALS, NRP, PHTLS, S.T.A.B.L.E., EVOC, and departmental competencies.
  • Maintains active paramedic certification in Indiana and Michigan.
  • Works collaboratively with transport team members, physicians, hospitals, and external partners to ensure quality patient care.
  • Demonstrates professional guest relations with referral hospitals, physicians, staff, and families.
  • Serves in shift charge/field supervisory role as assigned, supporting staffing, transport coordination, and referral facility communication.
  • Collaborates with Dispatch Center to optimize transport coverage and workflow processes.
  • Assists with patient care procedures including feeding, bathing, intubation support, line placements, sedations, and additional clinical procedures.
  • Supports trauma responses and code events across departments as needed.
  • Transports patients within the hospital and completes additional duties and projects as assigned

What You Bring 

As a Transport Paramedic ERT, you will demonstrate knowledge of ambulance and transport equipment, including the analytical skills required to modify equipment to meet individual patient needs. Possesses a solid foundation in transport protocols and critical thinking skills that support effective care and decision-making for transported patients. Adheres meticulously to sterile techniques and universal precautions. Exhibits strong guest relations and interpersonal skills, allowing for tactful and effective interaction with physicians, nursing staff, EMS personnel, respiratory therapists, patients, family members, and personnel from other hospitals and agencies. Communicates clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing, ensuring that appropriate information is effectively shared with other team members. Shows leadership qualities, organizational skills, self-motivation, and the ability to work independently while prioritizing tasks and accomplishing goals. Performs effectively in high-stress environments, particularly when caring for critically ill patients, and maintains strong team-oriented behaviors while working in close collaboration with others. Demonstrates proficiency in computer skills, including data entry, word processing, and spreadsheets, and maintains awareness of legal considerations in all aspects of patient care and transport.

Required Qualifications 

  • The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through the successful completion of the Indiana or State EMS-approved paramedic course, which meets the St. Joseph County EMS guidelines.
  • Current unrestricted Indiana or Michigan Paramedic license and current or previous National Registry to apply.
  • One year of previous experience as a Paramedic is preferred.
  • Must obtain and maintain both Indiana and Michigan Paramedic licenses.
  • Must obtain Critical Care Paramedic (CC-P) or Flight Paramedic Certification (FP-C) within two years of hire date.
